We're re-platforming - anyone have a few mins to test our Beta site and feedback?

Hi all,
As some of you already know because you've been testing it, we're in the process of re-platforming. In the last week or two we've been making changes based on your feedback and we are hoping to launch next week. Before we do that, we'd be grateful if some more Mumsnetters could take a look at it to see if there are any remaining glitches.

Our main objective in re-platforming is to move onto a new code base that will allow us to develop and improve features much faster. We have kept the functionality and design largely unchanged for now, aside from small enhancements to the user experience and some updates to a few features that don't function optimally. So, for example, there is a new version of Search and a new version of Private Messages.

If you’d like to take a look at the new platform please go to the beta site You can log in with your existing Mumsnet username and password.

For this test - we’ve taken a snapshot of the live site as it was at the end of 20 Feb - so any new posts, or changes you’ve made since then, won’t be reflected on the Beta site.

Whilst navigating around the Beta site, if you notice any usability issues or bugs, please report them via the “feedback” tab you’ll see on each page (see screenshot above). Any time you can spare to have a play (be it minutes or hours) will be hugely useful and much appreciated.

A few final things to note
1 - For now we're just focusing on the web version of the site, so if you only use the app, then we don't need you to participate just yet - we'll be looking at that in due course.
2 - If you’re a Premium member, this won’t be reflected on the Beta site just yet.
3 - Some users who've registered on Mumsnet with a social account will need to reset their password to login.
Big thanks!

@HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks

The content of the beta Active Conversations list appears to not be updating - just checked the top few and none of them have actually been posted to recently.
That's right - at the moment the Beta is a snapshot of the live site as of a few days ago.
jcyclops · 23/02/2022 14:16

It seems you can now Quote a post that contains a Quote - ie. "nested" quotes - something sorely lacking from the current version.

Thanks for this.

KatyMumsnet · 23/02/2022 14:30

Hi @TheOccupier - the sex topic threads will be visible in active but you can customise it by hiding the topic in your settings.

Will the new system have the capability to merge threads, which would be useful where there is more than one on the same topic?

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 23/02/2022 17:14

Clicking See Next reloads the page before moving on to the next OP post. I'm on Chrome.

Mix56 · 23/02/2022 20:44

I have posted on the beta site on my computer , the posts dont show on my phone.

I cant jump to the last posts, it doesn't go all the way with 'Flip', I know there are more recent posts as I can see them on my phone

I'm using Safari, maybe I need to use Chrome or Firefox

RampantIvy · 23/02/2022 22:17

I can't access it on my laptop either. I use Firefox.

Justmuddlingalong · 23/02/2022 22:53

Pop up video adverts? Oh joy of fucking joys.

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 23/02/2022 23:40

Works fine in Safari and Firefox here, MacOS 12.

Noooooooooooooooooooo. We want the MN emojis There's nothing close to beating Hmm or Grin
AuntieStella · 24/02/2022 09:42

The retention of the MN emoticons should be non-negotiable!

I'd go as far as disabling all others

The ad set up on the new site is the same as on the live site at the moment ie pop-up video ads don't display for logged in users...

They are still there gathered together under the blue Mumsnet 'M'

Sadly the Beta site is completely inaccessible to screenreader users.
The moving carousel on the homepage and adverts have no way for users to pause.
Form fields don't have labels
Insufficient colour contrast
Some areas have no focus indicator

Running an automated accessibility testing tool and WAVE it doesn't look like accessibility has been considered?

PinkDaydreams · 24/02/2022 15:20

Is there an option to hide threads that I'm on/started?

@PinkDaydreams

I don't want to see threads from five years ago. I know I can sort to view most recent, but can't find a delete/hide option
RampantIvy · 24/02/2022 15:33

I can't log in on the new beta site on my kindle or laptop on Firefox or Microsoft Edge.

hi @ResearchForTalk - thanks for this - we have considered accessibility but you're right that there's more to be done. We've run WAVE. The carousel does need improved and that's on our list to sort. You're right that there are a fair few form labels missing (eg in Search) - working through these now. Thank you. From what we can see, colour contrast passes AAA in WAVE. Do you have any examples of where it doesn't? And we've definitely missed some focus styles - again we're auditing it now to ensure that we add as many as we possibly can. Thanks again for your feedback, really helpful.
Mamanyt · 24/02/2022 20:29

@Svolvaer

Still no edit function that I can see, something that is really needed.
You beat me to it! I JUST missed something while proof-reading, and caught it just after hitting "Post Message"...as usual. And thought, "Lord, we need an "edit" function!
YukoandHiro · 24/02/2022 23:34

Why not redesign? It's so overdue

SittingOvation · 25/02/2022 09:21

Not sure if it's been mentioned above but when you search for a username using the search function, it brings up the threads they are on but doesn't display their posts. It would be good to be able to see and directly click on their post within each thread.

Frazzlerock · 25/02/2022 14:27

Ooooh its incredibly different, but I still use classic MN (which I love) so I'm not sure how different it is to the newer one.

FlakeyLurker · 25/02/2022 15:35

No images on the Winter Olympic ... Playmoble thread

FlibbertyGiblets · 26/02/2022 13:22

Hi there are we all going to be migrated over to the new site next week or whenever? Thank you.

Voice0fReason · 26/02/2022 20:28

I'm severely sight impaired so have my screen set to a size that I can read.
The Private Message section is dreadful for me.
This shows the entire screen and I can't scroll down. The top of the screen (which is all of it for me) is fixed.
I have to reduce the zoom a lot before I can see further down the screen to the messages, but then it's far too small to be able to read.
