We're re-platforming - anyone have a few mins to test our Beta site and feedback?

Hi all,
As some of you already know because you've been testing it, we're in the process of re-platforming. In the last week or two we've been making changes based on your feedback and we are hoping to launch next week. Before we do that, we'd be grateful if some more Mumsnetters could take a look at it to see if there are any remaining glitches.

Our main objective in re-platforming is to move onto a new code base that will allow us to develop and improve features much faster. We have kept the functionality and design largely unchanged for now, aside from small enhancements to the user experience and some updates to a few features that don't function optimally. So, for example, there is a new version of Search and a new version of Private Messages.

If you’d like to take a look at the new platform please go to the beta site You can log in with your existing Mumsnet username and password.

For this test - we’ve taken a snapshot of the live site as it was at the end of 20 Feb - so any new posts, or changes you’ve made since then, won’t be reflected on the Beta site.

Whilst navigating around the Beta site, if you notice any usability issues or bugs, please report them via the “feedback” tab you’ll see on each page (see screenshot above). Any time you can spare to have a play (be it minutes or hours) will be hugely useful and much appreciated.

A few final things to note
1 - For now we're just focusing on the web version of the site, so if you only use the app, then we don't need you to participate just yet - we'll be looking at that in due course.
2 - If you’re a Premium member, this won’t be reflected on the Beta site just yet.
3 - Some users who've registered on Mumsnet with a social account will need to reset their password to login.
Big thanks!

@Svolvaer

Still no edit function that I can see, something that is really needed.
As said this was more about recreating the existing website but in a new codebase so we haven't added an edit function as yet but it's on the radar and the good news is that we should be able to develop features faster once we've moved to this new platform and an edit feature is one of the first things on our to do list so fingers crossed you shouldn't have too long to wait Smile

Hi

@NewcastleOrBust sorry the beta site isn't working as expected for you.

If you try using a private/incognito browser to access the beta site or try clearing your cookies then that will hopefully solve that issue.

Thanks,

Katy

@HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks

As far as I can see all my other settings pulled forward successfully to the new site - so not hiding topics is the only big one.

Don't suppose we could get something higher than 100 for the posts-per-page again, like the old days?

There's now a "Show All" button at top of every thread so you can see all the posts in a page

@HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks

Oh, nice! Thanks :)
Sorry, also there's a setting in Talk Settings so you can set it to "All" and it will always show all posts as a default.

@BoreOfWhabylon

Looks fine except I'm a Premium member and it appears to not know that as getting all the ads.

Also, the MN emojis have vanished! (although if I type Xmas Grin I get the MN version). I would hate the site to lose them!

Premium isn't in Beta yet - it will be when we launch properly though. Emojis we've tried to make easier to add - they're in the new text box when you comment. I'll screenshot below.

Hi,

@tribpot that looks like an error - can you send us the URL of the page you're looking at, please?

It'll help us recreate the issue on our end if you can also share your device type and browser including the version e.g. Mac laptop, Chrome Version 98.0.4758.102

Thanks,

Katy

@BoreOfWhabylon - they're here

KatyMumsnet · 23/02/2022 09:16

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the feedback, we're just catching up!

If you don't get a direct response then don't worry - we are collecting everything and discussing it!

@BoreOfWhabylon & @DappledThings we've combined the advanced search features with the main search.

Enter your search terms/words in the search bar and then in the filters, you'll see:

  • Topics
  • Usernames
  • A date range

To apply the filters enter your search term and then click the filters:

  • in the left-hand sidebar on desktop
  • on the filter drop-down at the top of the page on mobile

The filters are automatically applied and will only be removed if you click 'clear filters'.

If you're still having issues let me know,

Katy

@tribpot & @PurBal

Thanks for your feedback it's really helpful! That is a bug and we think we know what it is, so we'll let you know once it's fixed.

@HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks

The content of the beta Active Conversations list appears to not be updating - just checked the top few and none of them have actually been posted to recently.
That's right - at the moment the Beta is a snapshot of the live site as of a few days ago.

KatyMumsnet · 23/02/2022 14:30

Hi @TheOccupier - the sex topic threads will be visible in active but you can customise it by hiding the topic in your settings.

@Justmuddlingalong

Pop up video adverts? Oh joy of fucking joys.
The ad set up on the new site is the same as on the live site at the moment ie pop-up video ads don't display for logged in users...

SueMumsnet · 24/02/2022 16:37

@ResearchForTalk

Sadly the Beta site is completely inaccessible to screenreader users. The moving carousel on the homepage and adverts have no way for users to pause. Form fields don't have labels Insufficient colour contrast Some areas have no focus indicator

Running an automated accessibility testing tool and WAVE it doesn't look like accessibility has been considered?

hi @ResearchForTalk - thanks for this - we have considered accessibility but you're right that there's more to be done. We've run WAVE. The carousel does need improved and that's on our list to sort. You're right that there are a fair few form labels missing (eg in Search) - working through these now. Thank you. From what we can see, colour contrast passes AAA in WAVE. Do you have any examples of where it doesn't? And we've definitely missed some focus styles - again we're auditing it now to ensure that we add as many as we possibly can. Thanks again for your feedback, really helpful.

KatyMumsnet · 28/02/2022 16:39

Hi all - thanks for all the feedback we're going through it all and catching up!

@Voice0fReason please can you tell me what browser/device you are using? Including the browser version if possible.

The zoom works ok for us when we test it on our device/browser combinations, so we need to try and simulate what you're seeing on our end to be able to fix the issue.

Thanks,

Katy

KatyMumsnet · 28/02/2022 16:40

@DIFleming we won't be updating the apps while we do the migration to the new website but we will consider this when we do look at the apps.

JustineMumsnet · 28/02/2022 17:12

@YukoandHiro

Why not redesign? It's so overdue
Hi YukoandHiro, the plan is to get the backend sorted before looking at the front end design. The good news is once we've re-platformed change should be much easier and quicker to implement. But long experience has taught us that users don't react well to wholesale design changes (I vividly remember one Mumsnetter's words to me after one site redesign: 'You've come in overnight and changed the wallpaper in my front room without even asking") so the changes we make are likely to be small and incremental over time rather than a big bang approach.

KatyMumsnet · 01/03/2022 10:15

Thanks all for your input!

@SoupDragon is it the 419 issue that's preventing you from logging in, or something else? We think we know what's causing the 419 issue so we will be working on a fix shortly.

KatyMumsnet · 01/03/2022 10:16

@Voice0fReason thanks for the extra info - we will take a look at this!

SueMumsnet · 07/03/2022 09:35

@Waferbiscuit

So much advertising on the page - was that the motivation for the redev? Too much spacing between text now and each article - meaning lots more scrolling.... so we can spend more time on the pages looking at the ads! LOL
Hi @Waferbiscuit - there is no more advertising on the new site than there is on the existing one. If you're not logged in on the beta site you may seen more advertising - as is the case on the current site. Logged in = less advertising. If you spot any particular ad format that you think contradicts what I've said, please do let us know.

Do we have the 1000 post option yet/

Yes it's in your settings Smile

KatyMumsnet · 06/05/2022 17:04

Hi, @Voice0fReason we've been working on accessibility fixes for the main part of the website and will be looking at private messages next. We're working through issues as fast as we can.

Would you be willing to either share a video of the issue or jump on a screen share call with us so we can see the issues you are having first-hand?

We will test things out ourselves but it's always helpful to see what the problem is first-hand if we can.

Thanks!

KatyMumsnet · 09/05/2022 11:30

@Voice0fReason thanks! Please send it to [email protected]

KatyMumsnet · 10/05/2022 15:05

@SE13Mummy sorry to hear you're having issues with the site.

Please can you tell me what mobile device you are using e.g iphone11 and also the browser e.g. Chrome / Safari etc?

These issues are intermittent so we're trying to track them down. To do that we need to know in which situations it's happening so we can try to recreate it on our side. Thanks!
