I find them quite useful. Whenever I see a load of * or @@@@@@@@@@ or !!!!!!!!! I click on hide. Saves me the bother of reading the thread.

yes please, and the ... etc. my screen reader reads every f*in'g one of them and it makes it impossible to know what the thread title is.
