A bit of news from us (nothing bad, don’t worry)

Hi all,

Just a quick one to let you all know that Mumsnet has taken over the running of new mum meet-up app Mush.

Mush aims to connect mothers in real life around their location and child’s ages, and has been vocal about the need for tools to address the loneliness and isolation that new mothers can experience. It’s worked with the NHS and with the Duchess of Cambridge as part of her mental health work with the Royal Foundation, and it’s enabled three million friendships and 25,000 group meet-ups.

Mumsnet has always been about making parents' lives easier by allowing them to connect and share support, wisdom and friendship, and we think Mush is bang in line with that purpose, allowing new parents to find local friends at that point when you most need it - when you have a newborn.

We’re going to run the app as it is for now and just add some links to and from Mumsnet’s antenatal section, as we think it’s a super useful tool for our users

You can find out more about Mush here and download it as a free app if you fancy giving it a whirl. We’d love to know what you think of it if you can spare a mo to report back?

Thanks
Justine

The name is terrible.

PumpkinPatch21 · 07/09/2021 09:45

Mush? HmmConfused what a ridiculous name.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 07/09/2021 09:58

I would have loved something like this Brew

HeronLanyon · 07/09/2021 10:01

Like the call to recalcitrant huskie teams ?! Good idea.

GertietheGherkin · 07/09/2021 10:06

Fantastic idea!
Not keen on the name though 🤔

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 07/09/2021 10:08

Lovely idea. Where does the name mush come from?
Mush - oversentimentality, a sloppy mess, yelling at dogs so they'll pull your sled...

ssd · 07/09/2021 10:08

Great idea. Dont really care about the name. Hope its a winner.

Boatonthehorizon · 07/09/2021 10:09

Good idea x

EmbarrassingMama · 07/09/2021 10:15

What does the name represent? A mother's brain? Nice.

ProudAlly · 07/09/2021 10:15

How about a section for us lonely mums whose kids have just gone to uni / left home. Would love to be in touch with a network of these mums!

chergar · 07/09/2021 10:17

Meet Up Social Hub?

The name isn't great but I suppose it gets people talking about it

SpindleWhorl · 07/09/2021 10:18

Mush is slang for friend, mate.

jugglingduty · 07/09/2021 10:20

I'm not a mum, but I think if I was and I was lonely, I wouldn't care less about the name.

minatrina · 07/09/2021 10:21

For me and my family mush definitely means 'man' so it's quite an amusing name to me Smile

I do actually have this app, unfortunately no one else in my area uses it Sad

SussexBonfireViking · 07/09/2021 10:24

@SpindleWhorl

Mush is slang for friend, mate.
where? I'm south UK and dont recall it (not saying its not of course)
PalmarisLongus · 07/09/2021 10:25

I do not wish to be at all negative, but is there security and safeguard things in place to stop catfishing men pretending to be new mums and arranging meets with "lonely women" ?

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 07/09/2021 10:32

This is a great idea!

OverTheWater · 07/09/2021 10:34

@SussexBonfireViking it's a Romany word Smile

My London family use it.

PileOfBooks · 07/09/2021 10:36

Name sounds awful to me "brain turned to mush" or feeding babies "mush. "

Id not heard of the app but it is great to get mums meeting other mums.

CorrBlimeyGG · 07/09/2021 10:41

Mush is slang for mate, friend. It's in the Only Fools and Horses theme tune!

PileOfBooks · 07/09/2021 10:43

Im southern and old and never heard it in that context! Is it nationwide app or just in an area it would be understood as mate?

SussexBonfireViking · 07/09/2021 10:47

thanks!

TellMeSomeGoodNewsPlease · 07/09/2021 10:51

Mush (to rhyme with push) means mate in Hampshire (Southampton particularly). And like mate it can be friendly or mildly threatening depending on tone/context! Also used in other places where Romany slang has been adopted/absorbed - I think Cockney uses it more like man/bloke (“a mush from Shepherds Bush”) rather than “Alright mush?”

Bit of a weird choice for a mum’s app if that’s the reason, but there we are!

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 07/09/2021 10:54

Oh, unattractive face is another one I've just remembered. "Your ugly mush"

It's a nice idea and will certainly appeal to some but the name 🤣

Boatonthehorizon · 07/09/2021 10:58

It can mean face but not ugly face hence the adjective ugly.
