Hiding whole topics

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 04/01/2021 10:23

I feel that this has probably been asked before, but is it possible to hide a whole topic? I'm getting increasing anxious about Covid Extreme Threads here. I would like to be able to hide the whole thing, or stop it appearing in trending, but just so it doesn't appear in Active... do I want the moon a stick? Grin

Hi @SpongeBobJudgeyPants,

We think we can guess which topic you mean...

You'll be glad to know that yes, you can hide whole topics. Here's a link to the Talk Preferences - Topics and Threads page. Just move the topics you no longer want to see into the Excluded Topics box.

Hope that helps Smile

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 04/01/2021 14:48

Oh, that's great @DawnMumsnet. I'll be on it like a car bonnet! Grin

@DawnMumsnet just to add can hq look at the fact that Covid threads are leaking onto aibu etc etc etc. I'm sure I'm not the only one

BaublesAndBawbags · 05/01/2021 19:24

OMG. I've just done this. In a single stroke Active Conversations has become an entirely different and much less stressful place.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 05/01/2021 20:47

@tobee. Yes, I agree. They get their own topic, to froth on there, and the plop all over AIBU. I had an 'interesting' discussion a fat-shaming thread that ought to have been in Weight Loss too. The argument that is used is that its 'for traffic' but that's not the point!

How do I do this from the app please?
I can't access the link you posted above.

MrsDoctorDear · 06/01/2021 00:24

AIBU is basically COVID AIBU now.

The only way around it @DawnMumsnet would be to add a voting option on the Coronavirus topic.

As that won't happen it's so liberating to hide AIBU totally.

Once CHAT takes over with Coronavirus threads then that's my cue leave MN.

tobee · 06/01/2021 02:40

It's a real shame @MrsDoctorDear ! Really need Mumsnet to be a support right now. Or at least a distraction.

soniamumsnet · 06/01/2021 10:56

Hi - thanks for all the comments here.

Here's a good section to escape to if needs be:

It's certainly not a distraction ☹️
MrsDoctorDear · 06/01/2021 11:55

@soniamumsnet the 'Corona free zone' is the minority on Mumsnet now. It's hardly used as most users quite rightly believed when the Corona topic was introduced we'd be able to carry on as normal on other topics.

But now Mumsnet may as well be called CoronaNet. It's taken over that much.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/01/2021 12:14

Doctor Yes, I'm going to hide AIBU. Genius! I shoulda thought about that. It seems to result in lots of menopausal being a tad vexed at the moment. And like you say when I have to hide Chat, rather than consider MN Premium, I'll seriously consider leaving altogether. Hmm

GreenWheat · 06/01/2021 12:19

I hid the Coronavirus board several months ago, as well as the feminism board. My Mumsnet life is infinitely less combative now!

thecognoscenti · 06/01/2021 12:24

Is there a way of doing this from the app? I only use a desktop at work and I don't particularly want to log onto MN from that.

Thanks

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/01/2021 12:26

Doctor when you hid AIBU, I'm on the list, but it doesn't start with A, do you know what weird classification its under. Or is it me? Starts with Becoming a Parent on my list! @soniamumsnet, can you advise, and also on the raised issue of AIBU being taken over by people who clearly should be frothing on the proper board? Do we just snitch every time, or is there another way?!

It's under Other Stuff on the topic list
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/01/2021 12:56

Thanks. Other stuff. Not exactly a system to rival Dewey, is it Hmm. Thanks Soup! My last nerve thanks you!

GloriaSass · 06/01/2021 12:57

Yes @DawnMumsnet I hid the coronavirus topic back in March. I really don't want to see constant posts moaning about people sending their kids to school, moaning about people shopping in the supermarket, being on furlough, etc etc. Can we somehow police the rest of the posts (AIBU being the main one) and get all the madness confined to one topic? It's just mad and unpleasant and in no way representative of what RL people are saying.

ATowelAndAPotato · 06/01/2021 12:59

Ooh thanks, been looking for the instructions on how to hide topics.
AIBU has indeed been overrun since the announcement on Monday
@MNHQ I appreciate you are busy, but could someone do a quick sweep through and move some of the obvious threads to the right topic - it’s soooo depressing!
(I would be happy to report a load, but feels like that’s just adding a load of work??)

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/01/2021 13:00

Just what i've said upthread Gloria, but I'm not sure how doable it is, unless I become the class snitch!

thecatfromjapan · 06/01/2021 13:00

Wow.

The 'Corona-free zone' is basically 'Mumsnet Normal'.

It's ... nice!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/01/2021 13:02

@SoupDragon job done. AIBU hidden. Must go and find a marble...Grin Thanks. Where are MN. Gin left over from Crimbo perhaps? Grin

OP posts:
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 06/01/2021 13:03

And MN are trying to distract us, without actually answering the question raised. Tad vexing. Not a long thread, after all.

I don't mind using the Corona Free Zone but it's pretty quiet, it's never trending so people probably forget about it. Maybe we need to keep bumping it. I'll make more of an effort. It's better than nothing I suppose 🙄
