Morning Mumsnetters,

We are planning today (12pm is eta) to introduce a new type of advertising format, which will mean that you will notice the odd double underlined green link on some posts on some threads, which if you click on will result in a boxed ad appearing.

As you know we fund MN through advertising but we are very conscious of not spoiling "the Mumsnetting experience" with over-intrusive and annoying ad formats. For that reason we don't allow pop-ups and pop-unders and have strict rules on expandable ads.

We are hopeful that you can live with this format, once you've got used to it at least, and that the links don't make you cross with us (or at least any crosser than our existing advertising banners do). As said, though, this is very much a trial, so please do let us know what you think and we promise to go back to the drawing board if you all absolutely hate them.

Many thanks,
M Towers

I don't know why they've gone away - have just called the agency to see what's going on. (They shouldn't affect speed of site though my2weegirls).

Clearly, though, many folks have ishoos with them, so think we will have to have a switch off option... or not have them at all on talk, plus there are some more sensitive boards on which they should never appear I think...

So back to the drawing board I guess. Thanks for your input as always.

Does that mean that if a topic that starts off ok changes topic within the thread that we can click the red !!!!! and you will be able to switch it off in that thread.

Or should there be another symbol next to the !!!!!!! for us to click to say it isn't approiate to have adverts IYSWIM

what would happen if you do a link but call it something that is then advertising with intelli(dumb)text pop-ups

that would be mildly interesting (for about 1 second)

what 20 year old ad exec with spiky hair and a goatee and trendy clothes talked you into trying these then?

ThreadyKrueger · 18/10/2007 12:41

Probably the suitcase of cash was more eloquent than the spikey-haired youth.

DANCESwithHughJackman · 18/10/2007 12:42

Oi...brown sticky one...you'd better not go (re. other thread about when it is time to leave mumsnet). Who will I talk to about wonderpets? FGS woman, stop being so selfish

iCodtheBlogCod · 18/10/2007 12:42

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 18/10/2007 12:44

Cod, have you noticed that when your ead the top post on the thread listings (ie before you click on it from threads i'm on) you don't get the ines crossing out LOL....

ThreadyKrueger · 18/10/2007 12:45

My son wouldn't eat his veggies. So I tried new Cheezypeas

iCodtheBlogCod · 18/10/2007 12:46

iCodtheBlogCod · 18/10/2007 12:46

DANCESwithHughJackman · 18/10/2007 12:48

arf. I miss the fast show.

You ain't seen me...right....

FrannyandZooey · 18/10/2007 12:51

Justine, this is completely awful

I went on a board where they were using this the other day and about one word in 6 linked to an advert. It looked awful and the idea of our words being used to advertise a company which we may well hate is completely unacceptable. I haven't ever felt so strongly about any of the advertising you have accepted. I would certainly leave the site if this form of advertising was being used.

Sorry.

FrannyandZooey · 18/10/2007 12:52

I didn't mean "sorry I would leave because you will all cry" btw

I meant "sorry for making a fuss and asking you to turn down money which I am sure you need"

TwigorTreat · 18/10/2007 12:54

I vote we take macdonalds and aptimal ads instead

LOL

iCodtheBlogCod · 18/10/2007 12:55

where are they?
i cant see em

LongMeg · 18/10/2007 12:55

I think this is a horrible idea, and can't quite believe that anyone thought it was anything other.

Random advertisements springing up in the most inappropriate of places doesn't sit easily with me. The software can't differentiate between chatty threads and sensitive ones, which could cause awful problems.

I also can't stand the idea of my posts advertising something I hate.

This will be the final nail in my MN coffin, I think.

JustineMumsnet · 18/10/2007 12:55

In case you missed my earlier post:

"Clearly, though, many folks have ishoos with them, so think we will have to have a switch off option... or not have them at all on talk, plus there are some more sensitive boards on which they should never appear I think...

So back to the drawing board I guess. Thanks for your input as always."

Dances .. I didn't say I was leaving, I was merely commenting on when one should leave .. and for me its boredom threshold

Cod .. there's one

Budababe · 18/10/2007 12:57

Well I haven't had any of them!

FrannyandZooey · 18/10/2007 12:58

I did see your post Justine, but it didn't seem to say for sure that they were going. I am still not sure if it says that.

Kaloo20 · 18/10/2007 12:58

damn! I missed them
