Temporary bans for posters continually posting CV stuff on non CV boards

Is this a thing? Can it be?
(accepting your decision that some cv threads are relevant to different topics, but the vast majority aren't)

As I and several other MNers have said, the torrent of threads is affecting MH so we've hidden the CV board to hide the worst of it, but its like some people have a need to force their opinions on the world so are sneaking posts in left right and centre.

and what if mnhq are sick/isolating and theres not enough staff for you all to report to and then they need to email and do the bans and all the fuss and detail around that

Isn't that just a stronger argument for the cv posters take some bloody responsibility for where (and what) they are posting then? They're the ones causing the problem in the first place.

Hysteria should not be a ‘lifestyle’ choice.

This is an enormous thing that is affecting people's lives enormously RIGHT NOW. But you want them all shut up in their own cupboard, and banned from the whole place if they dare to mention it in front of you?

Actually, yes. I’d be quite happy to lock them up in their own little cupboard I but I realize if they want to talk about something else, they should be let out of that cupboard. Also, I’m not sure a cupboard would be large enough.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 17/03/2020 10:04

I would oppose this strongly.

Ah, see, you’ve identified the problem right there! Not many people understand responsibility anymore. But that is ok, because they know have rights which supersede everyone and everything else!

Pickles89 · 17/03/2020 10:07

I'm absolutely with you OP.

SapphireSalute · 17/03/2020 10:13

covid 19 has imposed an entirely new lifestyle....probably lasting the rest of the year

you cant expect things to remain contained in one subject area when it overlaps many

anyway, it won't happen.....

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 10:13

The whole coronavirus topic needs to go.

It is a breeding ground for unhealthy hysteria not dissimilar to those mental health forums where people go to support each other to harm themselves and worse. Hysteria breeds hysteria and that is not healthy. But of course, it brings traffic to the site, so while posters are worrying about how they’re going to survive MN are cashing in.

If the topic can’t be removed then posts posted in the wrong section should be deleted. That way people would think twice before posting outside the CV topic.

And no. People don’t need to read hysteria about this on MN, and choosing not to do so is not choosing to stick their fingers in their ears.

I am at risk. What is panicking about dying going to achieve, exactly? Some people are so hysterical about dying that they’re no longer living.

LangSpartacusCleg · 17/03/2020 10:15

But that argument suggests that there is no need for a CV topic at all. I, for one, am very glad it exists to clear some of the crap away from the rest of the boards.

day1intheisolationhouse · 17/03/2020 10:16

You haven't posted this on the Coronavirus board. By your own reckoning, you should have a temporary ban. OP.

LangSpartacusCleg · 17/03/2020 10:16

Although I do understand (and agree) with AlternativePerspective’s perspective.

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 10:17

Surely this should go under the CV section too? the whole idea of having a site stuff topic is so that MN HQ see it. Posting it in the CV topic it will get lost among the “shall I send my kids to school/is it ok to speak to the neighbours/what about the pizza delivery guy, and the worst one “older people are clogging up NHS beds so lock them down....”

But if you’ve reported it then at least MN HQ will see it sooner. So yeah. Good work. Grin.

day1intheisolationhouse · 17/03/2020 10:18

We're in the middle of a pandemic. Anywhere people can talk, people will be talking about it.

I understand your strategy for dealing with it might be to stick your head in the sand, but you can't stop others talking about it nor should you. How incredibly short sighted and controlling.

If you don't like it, go read a book or watch TV or something.

iVampire · 17/03/2020 10:19

There are many, many duplicate threads

So the longest running immune-suppressed posters support thread has become tumbleweed and none of the new threads ever really ‘took’

That’s a shame. Does MNHQ have the capability to merge the threads which really are duplicates?

Knowhowufeel2 · 17/03/2020 10:20

Is this post meant to be ironic? WinkGrin

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 10:21

If you don't like it, go read a book or watch TV or something. how about if you’re so consumed by it that you have to read and post thread after thread after thread on mn then it’s time to step away and, oh, I don’t know, read a book or watch tv or something.

iVampire · 17/03/2020 10:21

‘ but you can't stop others talking about it‘

Straw man argument - no one is saying not to talk about it. just to comply with MNHQ edict and post in the topic

And perhaps use one of the existing threads rather than starting yet another duplicate

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 10:23

Mn has in the past allowed only one thread on a topic to stand, e.g. all duplicate Philip schofield threads were removed as are harry and Megan ones. This is no different, and there’s absolutely no reason why they can’t do the same.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 10:26

I understand your strategy for dealing with it might be to stick your head in the sand

Yet again, why does choosing to get factual, sensible information from actually reputable sources and professional experts at a time of my choosing, not 24/7 scaremongering internet warriors, equate to sticking my head in the sand?

Why do so many defenders seem to think MN is the only worldwide source of cv information? I urge you to look wider!

OP posts:
crapette · 17/03/2020 10:29

I am in France and someone has very kindly started a FB group to discuss the new lockdown measures announced yesterday. Could be very useful, but I had to leave the group after 10 minutes. Not because I "have my head in the sand" but because the level of absolute stupidity demonstrated by the posts is mind boggling (and embarrassing!).

Abracad · 17/03/2020 10:32

Please could someone tell me how to hide the CV topic? It’s driving me to distraction. Thank you.

SapphireSalute · 17/03/2020 10:33

and why are you calling worried mums threads on various virus related issues 'hysteria'

isn't that a word men use to dismiss women worries and to shut them up?

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 10:34

Perhaps we can all overwhelm AIBU with duplicate kitten and puppy pictures instead? Grin

WorraLiberty · 17/03/2020 10:36

Someone talking about barking dogs outside the dog topic is not multiple posts of uninformed hysteria and is also unlikely to cause mental health issues though.

Genuine question here (honestly not being a dick).

How do you know the multiple posts are full of uninformed hysteria, if you're not reading them?

Surely once you know they're CV related, you just hit the back button?

I agree that MN is CV central but it's never been any different whenever there's been anything big in the news, so I would oppose banning members.

Notonthestairs · 17/03/2020 10:37

Yes the threads should be in the correct topic and should be moved as soon as practicable.
No you shouldn't dish out bans just because you can't be bothered to look beyond Active threads.
I have had a look through property, legal and SN kids this morning. It's not difficult.

WingingIt101 · 17/03/2020 10:37

How do you hide a topic? I’d like to do this to reduce the amount of threads I’m seeing on it but am rubbish with Mumsnet!
