Is this a thing? Can it be?
(accepting your decision that some cv threads are relevant to different topics, but the vast majority aren't)

As I and several other MNers have said, the torrent of threads is affecting MH so we've hidden the CV board to hide the worst of it, but its like some people have a need to force their opinions on the world so are sneaking posts in left right and centre.

and why are you calling worried mums threads on various virus related issues 'hysteria' well what else would you call it? It certainly isn’t normal worry, so if not that then hysteria fits, surely? Or does being a woman. Exempt someone from being an hysterical lune?

There are plenty of people here who have valid reason to be sincerely worried. I have an underlying heart condition and need a transplant. If I catch this, I will very likely die. There are precautions one can take but worrying and panicking isn’t actually going to achieve anything, and amplifying that worry all over the internet and thinking that everyone else should be on board with your hysteria is only going to hurt you

So what is the point?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 10:40

Why are you assuming everyone is a woman AND a mother AND is posting regarding children? Nice appeal to emotion to try and deflect though.

This topic is specifically for site users to raise issues for MNHQ to review. I/others think one thing, you/others disagree. Why not start a new thread requesting every topic is completely open, CV or not?

Then MNHQ will decide whatever they decide and we'll have to like it or lump it

PS: I have a teenager who has to go out. I can stay home and am doing but there are other considerations. I have a job interview next week which I am told will still be happening face to face, and assuming I don’t die (which I’m. Not expecting to) I need a job. And saying to a prospective employer “well, I am in the severely at risk category so is there a way to do this another way,” before they’ve even given me a job isn’t exactly going to endear me to them is it, so I’m going to have to take my chances on public transport.

I could sit at home for the next week and panic about the what-if’s if I do this. Or I could go out, go to the interview, get the job, and when this is all over (because it will be,) I’ll be earning a living.

PhoneTwattery · 17/03/2020 10:44

The sheer, unbelievable stupidity of some people makes me despair of trusting them with strategies to avoid contracting the virus.

People can't even post to the right place here. People are starting threads with the same questions over and over.

On Social Media this morning one woman was urging people to phone "911" if they thought they had the virus.

It goes on and on.

AlternativePerspective · 17/03/2020 10:49

911? In the UK? Well I suppose at least that won’t clog up 999 or 111. Grin.

On my local fb group someone was urging people to catch the bus to hospital if they thought they had it.

On the other side someone talked of how this is the end times and how unless you have given your heart to Jesus you’ll be eternally damned.... very soon..... Hmm.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 10:52

People are starting threads with the same questions over and over.

My local radio station had a phone in with a travel expert. One caller droned on and on and on about every aspect of his "complex" situation which was eventually summed up as "can I travel to a place where the FCO has advised no travel" Hmm

He completely wasted the time available for other queries, such a shame!

CV is now everywhere.
Literally, and therefore, conversationally.

If you want a CV free zone for yourself, I suggest you self-isolate on the forum.

I'd support @MNHQ quarantining you and the 'shut up morons' brigade into your own private topic where you can try to avoid mention of the virus entirely.

Why not lobby for a CV free topic.

ShirleyPhallus · 17/03/2020 11:00

How do you know the multiple posts are full of uninformed hysteria, if you're not reading them?

Because titles like “CHILDREN DYING??!” sort of gives you a hint of what the content might be before you open it. But even if they aren’t that explicit, there are still lots of threads with totally bland titles which only relate to CV once you’ve opened them

Why not lobby for a CV free topic

Maybe this is actually a good idea. I miss the parking, MIL and wedding drama threads!

ASilhouetteAndNothingMore · 17/03/2020 11:06

I agree, I work in healthcare. Mumsnet used to be a place to come to switch off. Not anymore

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/03/2020 11:12

It has taken over the site

Some of the ignorance and whipping of hysteria is breath taking.

I must have hidden 200 threads in 2 days

LangSpartacusCleg · 17/03/2020 11:14

Why not lobby for a CV free topic.

I could absolutely support this. I had thought that should be everything but the CV topic but since it clearly isn’t, a CV-Free zone would work for me.

SapphireSalute · 17/03/2020 11:14

mnhq haven't come on yet to give their opinion

odd

LangSpartacusCleg · 17/03/2020 11:15

I never thought I would say this but......I miss Brexit! Shock

WorraLiberty · 17/03/2020 11:20

True Shirley, about the thread titles.

Maybe a Coronavirus free topic is the way forward but then again, if everyone stuck to the right topic, they'd all be CV free apart from one.

I reckon it'll calm down a bit in a couple of weeks.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 11:24

Why aren’t you posting your CV thread in the Coronavirus section??

Because Site Stuff is specifically for when MNers want to raise issues/make requests/ask questions of MNHQ. CV is the wrong topic for that.

Which I suspect you know full well...

OP posts:
ChicChicChicChiclana · 17/03/2020 13:08

For anyone wanting to hide the coronavirus topic (or any topic for that matter) I started a thread asking how to do this a few days ago:

here

If you look at my last post on the thread it tells you how to do it.

JellyfishandShells · 17/03/2020 13:19

I’ve noticed quite reasonable threads going on for a page or two then overwhelmed with a pile on of ‘ you are selfish ‘ ‘you are stupid’ ’ links to all kinds of questionable sources, diversion into political comments that aren’t actually allied to the thread, in a very aggressive manner , normally seen on Reddit, from new posters.

It feels like there are people patrolling the boards for the prime purpose of whipping up hysteria.

And hiding the CV thread ( which I have ) is not much use when this kind of hijacking occurs.

ChicCroissant · 17/03/2020 13:29

To hide the CV topic from your active list - see the word talk at the top of the screen, click the down arrow, then customise - scroll to the bottom of the page and the last option enables you to hide topics from the active screen. Unfortunately, you can still see them in the trending box but it's easier to avoid!

goldpartyhat · 17/03/2020 19:34

Wow. Confined to house arrest for 2 weeks with a sick child. Cinemas closed, gyms, ice rinks, swimming pools, theatres, schools, pubs etc shut. Shops with empty shelves and old people left with no food. Mortgages not being paid as staff are laid off, huge money worries, economy about to crash and burn. Aeroplanes grounded, stock exchange in free fall, people sick and dying, confused and frightened.

A pandemic of worldwide proportions and we're not supposed to talk about it anywhere else but one talk topic?

This involves so many topics. Health, financial, legal, pregnancy, children politics etc.

By all means put CV linked so people can choose to avoid, but don't sweep it under the carpet.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 17/03/2020 20:39

we're not supposed to talk about it anywhere else but one talk topic?

You've got the whole bloody internet and the rest of the actual real world to go on and on about it to your heart's content. Surely Mumsnet Chat (etc) can be left out of it?

but don't sweep it under the carpet.

Asking people to post in the correct topic (for anything, not just this) is just basic online etiquette. Not sweeping.

Cohle · 17/03/2020 20:52

I think lots of issues are potentially triggering for different people sadly. Placing harsher rules in place for CV than for references to e.g. rape, miscarriage, death etc etc would seem odd.

There are plenty of areas in which coronavirus interacts with other topics (as you yourself have found, posting this in site stuff OP...).

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 17/03/2020 20:53

What is panicking about dying going to achieve, exactly? Some people are so hysterical about dying that they’re no longer living.

Exactly, every other post on here is about CV, if it's helpful and informative then that's great, but they're not. They're scare mongering and panic inducing.

Lynda07 · 17/03/2020 20:55

What rubbish. Practically every thread is about the C virus anyway and even if it doesn't start off that way, the subject will come up. So what? Nobody has to read the threads.

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/03/2020 20:56

should do tbh. I have hidden the whole CV topic as it is messing up my mental health
