Introducing AIBU voting

TomMumsnet · 17/06/2019 13:25

Hi all,

We're testing out a new feature on AIBU. From today, a few randomly selected Mumsnet users will be able to access a voting function on AIBU posts.

We're testing the vote function because in user feedback lots of you asked for a quick way to answer an AIBU post (essentially; YABU or YANBU).
The general thinking was that this would encourage more interaction - so we're trying it out from today, let's see how it goes.

It won't show on all AIBU posts but you should see it on a few - and importantly, the OP will be able to turn on (or off) the voting function themselves.

Hopefully you'll find it useful - and as ever, we'd love to hear your feedback - so please give it a try, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Oh, and if you really aren't a fan then no problem, just head over to your Talk preferences and you'll be able to switch off (and back on) the voting feature.

Thanks
MNHQ

Bilge, not binge

SoupDragon · 17/06/2019 18:01

Damn, it's not limited to "new" and it looks huge and utterly ridiculous.

Greensleeves · 17/06/2019 18:01

Sadly not, Soupy, I'm on Classic and have just encountered it

Huggybear16 · 17/06/2019 18:01

I voted Eggy

I also changed my vote, so it seems posters can also change their mind.

EggysMom · 17/06/2019 18:05

Two questions for the Mumsnet team:

(1) How do I see the ongoing score? As the OP, surely I should see this without having to vote myself.

(2) Does the vote stay open forever (unless I close it)? Might be better to either have a selectable time (1 day, 2 days, 1 week) or a fixed time limit (1 week).

I do like the option somebody else said of having a button for "This is not an AIBU" Grin

MauisHouseOnMaui · 17/06/2019 18:05

I really don't like it.

The 'vote' button to the right of the thread title is obtrusive then when you actually click of the thread, the large panel where you click to actually vote is even more obtrusive.

Not to be completely negative but it's a bit shit, I can't immediately grasp the word I'm looking for. Tacky? Twee? It reduces the board down to clicks and like-farming, instead of people commenting to explain why they've clicked on YABU/YANBU they'll just click and then move on. Where's the craic in that?

I agree that an edit function and a way to permanently ban PBPs and trolls would have been a better update.

paxillin · 17/06/2019 18:05

Oh, so the OP gets to turn it off? So all those purely after froth will turn it off? Then no, pointless.

Huggybear16 · 17/06/2019 18:06

Strange.

I just clicked back on to @EggysMom thread and the voting part has disappeared.

TrixieFranklin · 17/06/2019 18:08

Will this be rolled out to the App too if successful?

NerrSnerr · 17/06/2019 18:10

I like it! I hope it gets rolled out to the app soon.

Not looking forward to the 3000 threads moaning about it though.

Callistone · 17/06/2019 18:11

I saw it on Eggy's thread but now its disappeared

NerrSnerr · 17/06/2019 18:12

I think it's likely to attract ridiculous troll posts competing for the most YANBUs.

The vast majority of the popular threads on AIBU are bollocks anyway so I don't think it matters.

SherlockSays · 17/06/2019 18:13

Have you only released on desktop versions? Seems odd if so, given that most people will be using mobile I assume.

paxillin · 17/06/2019 18:13

Is that because you only get to vote once, @Huggybear16?

ALongHardWinter · 17/06/2019 18:13

God idea!

FancyAPint · 17/06/2019 18:13

Excellent!
Mumsnet YANBU!

ALongHardWinter · 17/06/2019 18:14

FFS! I meant 'GOOD idea'!

ThePhoenixRises · 17/06/2019 18:14

Can't see the options, using iPhone and safari

53rdWay · 17/06/2019 18:15

The general thinking was that this would encourage more interaction

Is AIBU short on interaction at the moment?

ThePhoenixRises · 17/06/2019 18:18

I can see it now

SilverySurfer · 17/06/2019 18:24

AuntieStella
Lovely to see how MNHQ have decided to praise a poster who likes the idea, and ignore all those who don't.

I know, I laughed out loud when I read that. It's a bit like putting your fingers in your ears and loudly singing lalalala - hoping the nasty posters go away Grin

FancyAPint · 17/06/2019 18:24

while you're at it please could you prioritise the AIBU only filter on Android phones as I always have to use my laptop instead so I have this. I know you said you were looking into getting it sorted but I think this needs higher prioritising please!

SilverySurfer · 17/06/2019 18:30

The general thinking was that this would encourage more interaction

Right, because hardly anyone interacts on AIBU do they, sometimes you have to wait seconds days for a response Hmm

Huggybear16 · 17/06/2019 18:33

Possibly @paxillin but it would be good to see how everyone else has voted. Everything vote related has disappeared.
