Introducing AIBU voting

TomMumsnet · 17/06/2019 13:25

Hi all,

We're testing out a new feature on AIBU. From today, a few randomly selected Mumsnet users will be able to access a voting function on AIBU posts.

We're testing the vote function because in user feedback lots of you asked for a quick way to answer an AIBU post (essentially; YABU or YANBU).
The general thinking was that this would encourage more interaction - so we're trying it out from today, let's see how it goes.

It won't show on all AIBU posts but you should see it on a few - and importantly, the OP will be able to turn on (or off) the voting function themselves.

Hopefully you'll find it useful - and as ever, we'd love to hear your feedback - so please give it a try, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Oh, and if you really aren't a fan then no problem, just head over to your Talk preferences and you'll be able to switch off (and back on) the voting feature.

Thanks
MNHQ

Shame they're not ditching AIBU altogether instead of 'enhancing' it.

Oh no! That would be awful!

AIBU is the topic you go for entertainment, the others are for real questions. Why would you remove AIBU?! There's no MN without it.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 17/06/2019 21:22

It sounds fun on first thought but this is actually a horrible idea and will dissuade meaningful interaction. Not that every post contributes something, but there will definitely be even less I think.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 17/06/2019 21:31

This is basically the like button debate again. It will be sparkly tickers next.

I use this site less and less, it's not the same progressive site any more. If you continue to dumb it down further, I think a lot of people will vote with their feet and leave.

I know you don't care about that now, but you guys used to care when there was a handful of people here and people paid for CAT - going back to your roots of what this site really is rather than making it the comment section of the daily fail is what's needed here. Not this.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 17/06/2019 21:41

Well I just came to find the tread about it after finding the voting button in a thread.

I don’t think I like it. I’d sooner a chat.

mabelsgarden · 17/06/2019 21:42

Whoop! I have just voted on my FIRST one!!! (My first AIBU!)

HandInGove · 17/06/2019 21:43

Is this about giving the trolls something to properly compete for?

mabelsgarden · 17/06/2019 21:49

I disagree that it's like the 'like' or favourite' button. All it's doing is highlighting the % of people who think the OP is being unreasonable, and the % of people who think the OP is being reasonable. Which is what the posters do when they post.

It's just a quick way of seeing how many posters think the OP is being unreasonable/reasonable. You can still post on the thread(s.)

I think it's pretty cool.

I would like to see an edit button though, even if it does only give us say, 60 seconds to do it, just to correct stupid typos!!! (Like digital spy does.) Smile

@TomMumsnet could we have an edit button? (Even just for a minute or two?) Grin

homemadegin · 17/06/2019 21:53

I'm on iPad, wasn't chosen to try it but also cannot even see it.

SoupDragon · 17/06/2019 21:58

All it's doing is highlighting the % of people who think the OP is being unreasonable, and the % of people who think the OP is being reasonable

Which is exactly the same as like/dislike or up/down voting whatever you wish to call it.

tenlittlecygnets · 17/06/2019 22:10

I think this is a good idea. Have already done one this eve!

Pinkyyy · 17/06/2019 22:17

It appears that I've been given 'the power' to vote. I didn't realise as the feature looks like an ad and I automatically scrolled past it. It wasn't until I saw someone post a screenshot and I looked back for it that I actually realised I was able to vote.

mabelsgarden · 17/06/2019 22:27

@SoupDragon

Which is exactly the same as like/dislike or up/down voting whatever you wish to call it.

It's really not.

I am guessing you have not been given the ability to do it?

Hushabyelullaby · 17/06/2019 22:27

Love the idea!

managedmis · 17/06/2019 22:38

I've been randomly selected!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/06/2019 22:39

Great idea! Now people can count how popular they are.

Really mn? Rather than introducing tools that can be used to damage people's mental health, perhaps you could work on making the site more robust and less vulnerable to bugs and downtime.

managedmis · 17/06/2019 22:41

So it appears my secret power only works on certain threads..

Nofilter · 17/06/2019 22:42

Yes yes yes!can we have "likes" on comments? Would be cool too...

meditrina · 17/06/2019 22:44

Agree with OYBBK

echt · 17/06/2019 22:45

Sound of MN scraping the barrel.

FFS.

I thought MN was about information and debate, even if it got bunfight-y at times.

This is dire.

HappyLoneParentDay · 17/06/2019 23:26

@TomMumsnet I presume this isn't available on the app? I can't find it on any AIBU threads

FoxSquadKitten · 17/06/2019 23:39

I’d love a like button as well tbh This site needs changes

Hear hear

Ridiculous not being able to use it on the app 🙄

jessicawessica · 17/06/2019 23:40

It's very Jeremy Kyle isn't it MN?
Are you just trying to fit in?

mabelsgarden · 18/06/2019 00:16

@jessicawessica

It's very Jeremy Kyle isn't it MN???

Exactly.

Utter bollocks MNHQ, don't like it, closed it immediately and won't use it. Please desist from attempts to clone clickbait tactics from other sites, if I wanted that I would go to those sites. It is awful. You know these cheap hook tactics are based on those of casinos reeling in gambling addicts right?

NerrSnerr · 18/06/2019 05:51

Rather than introducing tools that can be used to damage people's mental health,

Does anyone really believe AIBU is beneficial to people's mental health in the first place? Maybe on the other boards but there is no point in pretending that AIBU is some kind of support group. People use it for entertainment and it's obviously that many of the OPs are fictional.
