Come on MNHQ, this is off and unkind

There is a thread where the poster is distressed and right next to it is an advert for something related. No way is it there in a helpful way given the issue is causing distress and the OP is NOT asking for useful hints but for productive help.

I’m not brave enough Grin

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 03/04/2019 01:27

Where is smother being snappy? You are just embarrassed that you didn’t realise that it’s the internet not a newspaper 😂 as a pp pointed out. I am old and even I know how these things work!

Tavannach · 03/04/2019 01:36

@KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree

I use that duck duck go and don't get any ads!

Yep, me too. So much more civilised.Smile

nagynolonger · 03/04/2019 01:37

Strange I never look at the adverts. I've got one telling me I can get to London (door to stage door) for £46. And one about joining the army....Do they really want 61 year old grannies?

Avon has come up now and Le shuttle.

Alicewond · 03/04/2019 01:39

I would think adverts are needed for income to keep this site free for us. We can’t complain if one annoys us. God it’s far worse on Facebook and other sites

ScarletBitch · 03/04/2019 01:46

Children's luxury tops here!

Topseyt · 03/04/2019 01:57

OP, stop calling people snappy when they just try to explain to you roughly how the ads work.

They work by detecting algorithms and sometimes also cookies. They aren't parked there by the owners of websites. Nobody is personally putting any ads up on any given thread. They appear automatically and are different for everyone. I get ads from sites I have recently browsed.

It is unlikely that the OP of the thread you refer to will have been seeing the same ads you did.

Just accept that you misunderstood and made incorrect assumptions. People took the time to respond. Nobody began by being snappy to you, there was no need to take offence.

Bluntness100 · 03/04/2019 05:34

I don't understand how the ads work

I think that's clear, maybe it would have been better to ask how they work, rather than start a daft thread accusing mumsnet of being cruel and unkind and deliberately doing it?

origamiunicorn · 03/04/2019 06:13

The way it works, is that nothing is free. So if something is free it's because it's using your data somehow, you are the product. That goes for FB, Twitter, MN....

Monty27 · 03/04/2019 06:18

Algorithms.... 🙄

Luglio · 03/04/2019 06:26

This reminds me of the time I emailed my mother a document for her to check and she printed it off, deleted the email, and edited it by hand Confused

GoFiguire · 03/04/2019 06:37

I never get any interesting ads. I blame MNHQ.

IncrediblySadToo · 03/04/2019 06:38

🙈...feel free to apologise OP, I’m sure MN would appreciate it.

savageswimmer · 03/04/2019 06:44

Was it the DNA test one? I had that the other day Confused

GottaGetUp · 03/04/2019 07:10

Smother the ad is showing a casting box, which is used to make othortics, which might be used to help with back pain 🙂

Saucery · 03/04/2019 07:14

I had that wrinkly old man gurning at me from the top of the page every single thread, or the manky feet. Finally installed adblocker when MNHQ wouldn’t/couldn’t block the malware attached to one of their ads the other week. Understand ads pay for the site but ones riddled with viruses, nah.
Maybe the person on the thread concerned has adblocker too, OP and you are worrying for nothing?

LarryGreysonsDoor · 03/04/2019 07:51

So someone who doesn’t understand what something is or how it works complains and demands that it is changed.

Remind anyone of anything?

Acis · 03/04/2019 08:56

Ooh, Smother, how do you opt out of ads?

FermatsTheorem · 03/04/2019 09:14

I've been getting ads for gay cruises (as in, single-sex, men-only cruises aimed at gay men) for months now. God only knows what I clicked on to put me in that demographic group according to the ad server's algorithms.

I'm almost tempted to apply - sun, sea, sangria, surrounded (if the ads are anything to go by) by handsome young men clearly having a lovely time. What's not to like?

Of course the young men might not feel the same way at the sight of plump, middle-aged, menopausal me reclining on a sun-lounger in a manner strangely reminiscent of a beached whale, clutching my sangria (complete with little parasol) and smiling in what I hoped was a benevolent way...

However, that said, I believe MN can do something - if you take a screen shot and email it to them, I believe they can ask the ad serving company to block the ad in question from showing up on their site.

drspouse · 03/04/2019 09:16

I've been getting them too, I can only suppose after reading two homophobia threads.

Notthatsimple · 03/04/2019 09:19

I don’t own a dog.

Come on MNHQ, this is off and unkind
Bluntness100 · 03/04/2019 10:25

Starting to wonder if the op has scarpered 🤣🤣🤣

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 03/04/2019 10:38

Fermats do it! I'll have the sun lounger next to you!

LarryGreysonsDoor · 03/04/2019 10:40

I'm getting ads suggesting I might want to go to a trade fair in Munich of German construction industry equipment.

spugzbunny · 03/04/2019 11:34

It's so bloody rude when someone posts, people take the time out to reply and clarify and then the OP doesn't come back and say 'oh thanks! My mistake, I didn't realise. Thank you for all your help'
