Come on MNHQ, this is off and unkind

There is a thread where the poster is distressed and right next to it is an advert for something related. No way is it there in a helpful way given the issue is causing distress and the OP is NOT asking for useful hints but for productive help.

Wow, Smotheroffive.

Bluntness - I would have told MNHQ privately if they wanted to know. I didn't want to draw attention for the OP.

I've looked at the thread and the ad seems to have changed.

I don't understand how the ads work, all the ones I am seeing have nothing to do with anything I've posted, clicked on, thought about.

I was trying to stop someone being more upset, that's all.

Is it the bladder incontinence ones?

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 02/04/2019 20:13

I use that duck duck go and don't get any ads!
As far as I know, they work on cookies left by any pages you've visited, items you've searched for and (I think) things that your fb friends like.
Clear your cookies and search history and see if the ads change.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 02/04/2019 20:17

At the risk of sounding really bonkers. I was with friends on holiday and we were discussing mosquito bites, my friend was really suffering with a bad reaction. We were talking about how bad the reaction was and what they could use to help. My iPad was on the table I wasn't using it but I kept getting ads for mosquito repellents. I switched the microphone off and the ads stopped.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 02/04/2019 20:22

I get the gay cruise one too.

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 20:27

Well that's rude OP!?

Care to explain your comment, after I took considerable time to try to help you understand how ads work?

Are you always this rude?

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 20:28

The ads certainly won't be about things you have thought about

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 20:29

...but anything you type, search, speak, photo, etc..all fair game
Opt out, simples

SneakyGremlins · 02/04/2019 20:31

I'm glad they aren't about things you think about Shock

SunshineCake · 02/04/2019 22:12

Smother - you were very snappy in your 20:04 post.

I’ve got an iOS game link. I’m not clicking on it.

drspouse · 02/04/2019 22:15

I have an ad for Michael Ball, and Tesco Mobile.

GoGoGadgetGin · 02/04/2019 22:21

I'm getting Vestaire Collective! Fancy bags!

LarryGreysonsDoor · 02/04/2019 22:25

You know that MN don’t pick the adverts and everyone sees different ads?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 02/04/2019 22:25

It's the internet not a newspaper! We all see different ads depending on about a gazillion creepy factors!

Well at least OP knows now.

I can't see that smother was rude at all.

Smotheroffive · 02/04/2019 23:25

No, thanks for my contribution then OP.

snappy in your post Hmm

How very rude of you.

TwitterQueen1 · 02/04/2019 23:38

It's known as Contextual advertising OP, which is a form of targeted advertising for advertisements appearing on websites or other media, such as content displayed in mobile browsers. The advertisements themselves are selected and served by automated systems based on the identity of the user and the content displayed.

So Google will somewhere have me categorised by age, sex and probably loads of other things too. Cookies in my browser history will feed back info on my searches - in my case, hoovers, echo shoes, etc. Also, bots will be picking up on content I have read - so like another poster on here, I too clicked on the silly Bonmarche ad and am now getting ads for them. I recently renewed my pet insurance and get ads for that too.

These ads will not be presented to others - unless they've been searching for and browsing the same things as me.

HTH.

Mememeplease · 02/04/2019 23:42

I don't even drink bloody tea at all but that seems to be on 80% of the time.

buzzbobbly · 02/04/2019 23:51

I've got kids designer clothing which is ironic as a) I'd never spunk money on something so wasteful and b) I'm posting here hot on the heels of commenting on a child free thread!

S1naidSucks · 02/04/2019 23:55

Think yourself lucky. I’ve been haunted by this bloody add for weeks. 🤢

Come on MNHQ, this is off and unkind
Smotheroffive · 03/04/2019 00:49

Wth even is that ad sucks??
I've been seeing that... have you made any sense of it? Or clicked to see how making footprints sorts your back pain...if you even get back pain?!

S1naidSucks · 03/04/2019 01:10

The is no way that I am going to click on that ad Smotheroffive!
I scroll past it as quickly as possible. I made the mistake of looking at the feet! They’re disgusting. The toe nails are broken and absolutely filthy. 🤢

Smotheroffive · 03/04/2019 01:22

Ha-ha! Just wondered if anyone had been braver than me, is very yuk! True!

MashedSpud · 03/04/2019 01:22

Haha that massive feet ad is always on my page.

Smotheroffive · 03/04/2019 01:23

....and have you looked? Grin
