Managing your cookie preferences

Hi all

A quick heads up that, starting today, we're trialling some tech that will enable users to manage their cookie preferences.
This approach is considered best practice: giving people more control, and aligning with GDPR and the recently updated Data Protection Act.
And we have tried to make it not too annoying, but apologies in advance for any interruption to your browsing -- as ever, it's a balancing act.

Initially, we're rolling it out in our editorial sections, so you won't see it across Talk.

Here's how it should work:

  1. The first time you visit a Mumsnet editorial page you should see a pop up along the bottom of the screen. You can choose to accept all cookies, by clicking ‘I Agree’, or you can manage your individual preferences by clicking ‘show purposes’.
  2. At the bottom right hand side of the Privacy Policy page you should see a settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen which says ‘Privacy settings’. If you click on this, a pop up should appear at the bottom of the screen. Here you can manage all your individual cookie preferences.

Thanks all - please do let us know your feedback.

JanineMumsnet · 28/09/2018 19:41

Hi @FloPen, thanks for letting us know what you think.

When you consent, you are giving us permission to store cookies on your computer. We think it's worth remembering that cookie data is anonymous. And that storing it gives benefits to you as a user of the site.

Some of these cookies allow the site to function as it should by allowing you to stay logged in, for example. Other cookies enable us to analyse how people use the site which allows us to make improvements. Some cookies personalise ads and this pop-up allows you to turn those off.

As we improve the site, you should get more and more ability to fine tune the data you're happy (or not happy) to share. This is just a start.

You can customise your cookie preferences at any time by clicking "privacy settings" on our privacy policy (www.mumsnet.com/info/privacy-policy).

Thanks again for the feedback -- hope this helps.

Hi all

Just a quick heads up that after a few days testing this in the Mumsnet editorial sections, we have decided to roll this out across the talk forums, so you will start to see this privacy pop up across the site.

As ever, please do let us know your feedback

Hi @diddl @breastfeedingclownfish and @RamblingFar this shouldn't be happening - you should only see the pop up a maximum of once every 30 days.

I am looking into this and this will hopefully be resolved soon.

Hi @diddl @breastfeedingclownfish and @RamblingFar

We've been doing some digging and one reason could be because some users have higher security settings on their browsers or the presence of ad blockers, for example. Is this the case for you?

Both of these things can prevent the pop up from recording whether you consented or not, which means the pop up will appear each time you access the site.

Over and above that, it would be great if you could give us any more detail about your browser and how often you're seeing it - is it every single page?

JanineMumsnet · 02/10/2018 08:41

Hi @AuntieStella

You can change your settings at any time, these are the steps to do this:

  1. At the bottom right hand side of the Privacy Policy page you should see a settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen which says ‘Privacy settings’. If you click on this, a pop up should appear at the bottom of the screen. Here you can manage all your individual cookie preferences.
  2. You can also change your settings by going to your account settings page. To get there click 'My Mumsnet' at the top right (on mobile it might appear an icon of a person), then click 'Settings' and you should see the privacy settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen.

JanineMumsnet · 02/10/2018 09:19

Hi @breastfeedingclownfish

That sounds really annoying and we're really sorry this is happening. We appreciate why you might choose to use an ad blocker, but unfortunately the way some ad blockers work make it impossible for us to record your consent (or lack thereof). We appreciate you may not want to do this, but one way to prevent the pop up reappearing would be to exclude the Mumsnet site from your ad blocker.

JanineMumsnet · 02/10/2018 10:29

Hi @NotAnotherJaffaCake thanks for letting us know. I am getting our tech bods and Quantcast to look into why this might be happening. Just to clarify, are you saying this is only an issue for you in Firefox?

@ShotsFired sorry about this, it must be really annoying. You might have seen the posts above, but is it possible you have an ad blocker installed? If that isn't the case, it would be useful to know what device and or browser you are using when you get this issue, and also if you change browsers is it still an issue?

Thanks

JanineMumsnet · 09/10/2018 11:16

Just an update on the cookie preferences pop-up. We had to take this down for a few days while we fixed some issues we had identified.

We have now put the pop up back on site again within our editorial sections to test for the next 24 hours.

As ever, if you have any feedback please let us know.

We are still looking into the issue of ad blockers making pop up reappear and I will keep you updated with any further information I receive regarding this.

Hi all,

Just another update to say the cookie preferences pop up should now be appearing across the entire site. As ever, if there are any issues, please let us know.

JanineMumsnet · 12/10/2018 08:20

Hi @GoldilocksAndTheThreePears thanks for your feedback, are you using ad blockers at all?

Some ad blockers interfere with the way these cookie preference pop ups work and therefore it means the pop up will keep reappearing because there's no way of recording which option you chose. If that is the case it may help to exclude Mumsnet from your ad blocker.

I am investigating with Quantcast exactly which ad blockers are causing the issues.

JanineMumsnet · 12/10/2018 08:23

@MsMotherOfDragons @tigercub50 @6SpringCats sorry to have piqued your interest unnecessarily! Grin Grin If only it was about actual cookies? Belgian white choc for me!

JanineMumsnet · 15/10/2018 10:35

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback. I will need to do a bit more digging to respond to some queries, so if I haven't replied to you below, please don't think I've forgotten you. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

@bruffin that shouldn't be happening, so you have any more detail about your device and browser? Are you on mobile, tablet, desktop? What OS are you using? Which browser do you use? I see you say Chrome, is this also happening if you use a different browser?

@FoofFighter we're really sorry about this. Just to check, are you using an ad blocker? If not, could you let me know a bit more detail about your device, OS and browser so I can do a bit more digging into the problem for you?

@WomanDictionaryDefined we're really sorry about this, it must be really irritating! But are you saying this is only when you're logged out? This really shouldn't be happening. We know that ad blockers do interfere with the consent pop up working properly, but this shouldn't change if you are logged in. Have you tried whitelisting us to see if this helps?

@JessicaJonesJacket Sorry to hear you find the pop up intrusive, but this is deliberate. This is to ensure all users of the site make a definite decision to consent or not to 3rd party cookies. We chose the Quantcast pop up because this is the most widely adopted one across the web at the moment. It is concerning that you haven't seen the pop up on mobile. I will look into this for you.

Thanks

JanineMumsnet · 15/10/2018 15:08

Hi @Becca19962014 I just want to clarify what you're seeing here: are you saying the pop up is saying that all purposes are required? At the moment for the first party cookies (the section titled 'Mumsnet') we have the following as required:

  • Information storage and access;
  • Content selection, delivery and reporting; and,
  • Measurement

These cookies allow the site to function as it should -- by allowing you to stay logged in, for example. But the option titled 'ad selection, delivery and reporting' you can turn off.

Under the heading 'Third Party Vendors' all purposes have a toggle for the user to turn on and off.

Is this not what you are seeing?

JanineMumsnet · 15/10/2018 15:48

Thanks for getting back to me @Becca19962014 - that shouldn't be happening. If you have selected 'off', it shouldn't automatically turn on. I'll feed that back to Quantcast who have provided this pop up.

You can amend your choices at any time by either going to your account settings, or by going here and you'll see a 'Privacy settings' toggle at the bottom right of the screen. If you click that all your options should come up. If you have time, it would be great if you could just double check your options are as you selected, and if they aren't it would be useful to have a screen shot.

The Mumsnet logo should be appearing on the initial screen, and it is for me at the moment. Although, you're right that it doesn't show on the 'purposes' screen, and I'll feed that back to Quantcast too.

JanineMumsnet · 18/10/2018 11:21

Hello, it's me again! Sorry again for the long delay in getting back to some posters, but I just needed to clarify a few things:

@AnneEyhtMeyer We are really sorry you feel this way, but we would like to reassure you that this really isn't an exercise in trying to get you to turn off your ad blocker, but unfortunately ad blockers prevent us from being able to record the option a user has chosen on the pop up. We are working hard to try to get a list of compatible ad blockers to give you the option to keep using one. But we would like to say that we have listened to feedback on ad quality, and as a result we do not run intrusive formats, and we have since removed the large 'reskins' that were appearing across the site - these only appear on the specific area such as the homepage and talk homepage.

Regarding tracking across the web - perhaps I'm misunderstanding your point, but the 'required' options do not allow us to track you across other sites, this relates only to your behaviour on our site. It's also worth noting that cookie data is anonymous and we cannot connect this with you as an individual. You are able to turn off 3rd party cookies which track you elsewhere on the web.

@Abeautifulpeagreenboat Right now, you should have the option to opt out of "Ad selection, delivery, reporting". And we are working on making it possible to opt out of other uses of cookies on the site.

@Becca19962014 We're really sorry to hear about your scrolling issues. If you're able to share a screenshot or further details by PM, we'd be very grateful. Right now, you should have the option to opt out of "Ad selection, delivery, reporting". And we are working on making it possible to opt out of other uses of cookies on the site.

As ever, please keep sending over your feedback.

JanineMumsnet · 18/10/2018 11:29

@NotAnotherJaffaCake sorry to hear again of your problems. I am trying to get from Quantcast a bit more detail about which ad blockers are causing the issue, but in the interim, upthread the user @WingsofXXSteel mentioned a workaround which involves adding Mumsnet to a 'container' on Firefox, and is now reporting that it works fine now. Wings linked to this article, addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Hopefully this will help!

JanineMumsnet · 22/10/2018 14:52

Hi @Abeautifulpeagreenboat

To confirm, at the moment, we require these 3 purposes, but you are able to opt out of "Ad selection, delivery, reporting" and you can opt out of all purposes for 3rd party vendors.

But we are working on being able to opt out of these purposes in the future.
