Managing your cookie preferences

Hi all

A quick heads up that, starting today, we're trialling some tech that will enable users to manage their cookie preferences.
This approach is considered best practice: giving people more control, and aligning with GDPR and the recently updated Data Protection Act.
And we have tried to make it not too annoying, but apologies in advance for any interruption to your browsing -- as ever, it's a balancing act.

Initially, we're rolling it out in our editorial sections, so you won't see it across Talk.

Here's how it should work:

  1. The first time you visit a Mumsnet editorial page you should see a pop up along the bottom of the screen. You can choose to accept all cookies, by clicking ‘I Agree’, or you can manage your individual preferences by clicking ‘show purposes’.
  2. At the bottom right hand side of the Privacy Policy page you should see a settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen which says ‘Privacy settings’. If you click on this, a pop up should appear at the bottom of the screen. Here you can manage all your individual cookie preferences.

Thanks all - please do let us know your feedback.

I don't like it at all. As far as I can see, by accepting it I am giving you consent to use information about me. Which is no benefit to me. I've consented, but am seriously thinking of leaving MN if I haven't got the ability to stop you using me as data.

Hi @FloPen, thanks for letting us know what you think.

When you consent, you are giving us permission to store cookies on your computer. We think it's worth remembering that cookie data is anonymous. And that storing it gives benefits to you as a user of the site.

Some of these cookies allow the site to function as it should by allowing you to stay logged in, for example. Other cookies enable us to analyse how people use the site which allows us to make improvements. Some cookies personalise ads and this pop-up allows you to turn those off.

As we improve the site, you should get more and more ability to fine tune the data you're happy (or not happy) to share. This is just a start.

You can customise your cookie preferences at any time by clicking "privacy settings" on our privacy policy (www.mumsnet.com/info/privacy-policy).

Thanks again for the feedback -- hope this helps.

Hi all

Just a quick heads up that after a few days testing this in the Mumsnet editorial sections, we have decided to roll this out across the talk forums, so you will start to see this privacy pop up across the site.

As ever, please do let us know your feedback

It's a very intrusive pop-up and I refused to click on it until I knew it was genuine. However it's incredibly hard to search for and read this post when it pops up every couple of seconds until you agree. Got there in the end by Googling site stuff cookie Mumsnet.

I'm getting the 'accept' pop up every time I refresh. I accept every time and it still comes back. It's very irritating

diddl · 01/10/2018 17:28

OK-how many times do you have to accept before the bloody thing will stop popping up-twice in the middle of trying to write this post!!!!

Report
JanineMumsnet · 01/10/2018 18:54

Hi @diddl @breastfeedingclownfish and @RamblingFar this shouldn't be happening - you should only see the pop up a maximum of once every 30 days.

I am looking into this and this will hopefully be resolved soon.

Thanks for letting us know. I tend to just click on "I accept". The personalised ads are infuriating when it's something I've just ordered though.

I'm getting this on every single page I visit, it's very annoying.

Not happy that this bit is required:

The storage of information, or access to information that is already stored, on your device such as advertising identifiers, device identifiers, cookies, and similar technologies.

Far too vague and very intrusive, mn cookies, yes ok, the rest of it no I don't bloody well think so!

I use Moxilla firefox and will be segregating Mumsnet in its own container from now on so you can't poke about the rest of my internet activity.

I have been doing this for sometime with facebook given that they make no bones about trawling every open tab in your browser whilst you are logged into facebook (secure banking preferences anyone?). Thank goodness Mozilla are on this and have a work around am pigging sick of all the data mining, it is rude and intrusive.

Also can you make this thread a front page sticky for the weary of pop ups please?

Hi @diddl @breastfeedingclownfish and @RamblingFar

We've been doing some digging and one reason could be because some users have higher security settings on their browsers or the presence of ad blockers, for example. Is this the case for you?

Both of these things can prevent the pop up from recording whether you consented or not, which means the pop up will appear each time you access the site.

Over and above that, it would be great if you could give us any more detail about your browser and how often you're seeing it - is it every single page?

I do use a blocker. I am getting the error for every page and every refresh. I tend to have multiple tabs open and it appears with every refresh, or action.

There are many people who use blockers, and for good reason.

I have pressed the Accept button probably over 100 times tonight.

I also use an adblocker and is all working fine in it's safe container now.

I clicked the accept by mistake when I meant to click the 'tell me more' option. So I don't know if I'm at all happy with what I did.

Is the exact same 'tell me more' (or whatever it was called) page available somewhere, if so where?

JanineMumsnet · 02/10/2018 08:41

Hi @AuntieStella

You can change your settings at any time, these are the steps to do this:

  1. At the bottom right hand side of the Privacy Policy page you should see a settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen which says ‘Privacy settings’. If you click on this, a pop up should appear at the bottom of the screen. Here you can manage all your individual cookie preferences.
  2. You can also change your settings by going to your account settings page. To get there click 'My Mumsnet' at the top right (on mobile it might appear an icon of a person), then click 'Settings' and you should see the privacy settings toggle at the bottom right of the screen.

Hi @breastfeedingclownfish

That sounds really annoying and we're really sorry this is happening. We appreciate why you might choose to use an ad blocker, but unfortunately the way some ad blockers work make it impossible for us to record your consent (or lack thereof). We appreciate you may not want to do this, but one way to prevent the pop up reappearing would be to exclude the Mumsnet site from your ad blocker.

I don't use an ad blocker and every time I click on a page I am getting the pop up, it's deeply irrirtating. I have other sites that use the same manager (the Quantcast one) and I'm not constantly bothered by it. Please sort it:)

FOr what it's worth, the "Manage Preferences" popup behaves fine on Chrome, but it pops up on every page in Firefox.

I was just coming her to ask if something had been tweaked. I am getting this pop up on almost every single page I visit.

I've accepted once, but still it comes.

It's also very slow to react once clicked, although that could be shinky internet this end.

Hi @NotAnotherJaffaCake thanks for letting us know. I am getting our tech bods and Quantcast to look into why this might be happening. Just to clarify, are you saying this is only an issue for you in Firefox?

@ShotsFired sorry about this, it must be really annoying. You might have seen the posts above, but is it possible you have an ad blocker installed? If that isn't the case, it would be useful to know what device and or browser you are using when you get this issue, and also if you change browsers is it still an issue?

Thanks

@JanineMumsnet Ahead of you! I did have Adblocker on this machine but I disabled it after my previous post. Just came back to update thread and the pop up was there again.

Laptop running Chrome.

Yes, only on Firefox. Chrome behaves itself. And I've just realised it might be because I have Ghostery installed on Firefox, but the same QUantcast management box behaves itself on other sites.

WingsofXXSteel · 02/10/2018 12:16

I am using adblock plus and the containers on firefox with no ghostery and that seems to work Jaffa.

I haven't changed anything at my end but the pop up is behaving itself in Firefox now.
