TESSL - Tech's Exciting Simple System for Links

Sometimes people ask: "What on earth were you thinking of, making it so complicated to insert a link into a post?" I usually answer, "I dunno really, I must be a bit thick."

To rectify this sad state of affairs, we've added a new way to insert a simple links to another website (or other bits of mn of course). To do so, just type the full address inside and . So to link to our lovely home page you would type www.mumsnet.com without the spaces, and it would come up as www.mumsnet.com.

The old complicated way still works if you want to display text other than the link itself....

We'll update the Links guide to the right of the message box to reflect this.

Regards,
Tech

I know, I can't get out of the habit though. I'm just that bit too old to be comfortable not signing off..... dunno why though cos have been using online conferencing since 1990. Anyone else remember COSY, (c) University of Guelph? wanders off.....

cgi.gjhost.com/~cgi/mt/netweaverarchive/000026.html

Ooh that's so much easier....

Tech · 23/05/2007 17:13

And I know sometimes doesn't really have an apostrophe in it. I don't know why I did that. In fact I might use my special powers to make it go away.....

Tech · 23/05/2007 17:16

On the batting, what will happen is sneaky persons will use the bat link, and another site url as description so that it looks like a simple link but really isn't.... In fact I bet SoupDragon has already done that somewhere.....

Tech · 23/05/2007 17:19

Ooops. Told you I was thick. Gimme 2 minutes....

Tech · 23/05/2007 17:23

That tech is thick as 2 short planks . Should be alright now.

Tech · 23/05/2007 18:07

Oh, sorry soupy. I always associate the bat with you (cos it's called soupy I suppose). I'm sure you wouldn't in fact dream of such a thing....

I must not cast aspersions on soupydragon's character.

sorry some excess y characters there (prob making insult worse...). I'll slink away now..

www, that's why we left the old way working rather than doing description and making it all too easy. Those who have suffered to learn the horrible link syntax would surely cavil and wail. Actually, I'll have a look at doing that description but leave the old way working behind the scenes as well.

Incidentally, I wonder if that soest.hawaii.edu site notices all the traffic from here and wonders what causes it. On the fruit bats, I remember when I went on hols to Australia going for a Daintree river cruise. There were thousands of those fruit bats / flying foxes in all the trees. They are the cutest animals you ever did see with huuuuge big eyes. Sadly, there were also lots more of them which were just the wing-skins - left alongside some very fat tree pythons what had eaten the rest of the carcass. Poor little mites.

OliviaMumsnet · 23/05/2007 18:37

I always wondered about the bat's host too. Did Cod really contact them? What did the people at soest.hawaii.edu say?

Tech · 24/05/2007 17:43

The enhancement to this is done. If you type
www.mumsnet.com look at this nice page ( without the extra spaces after the brackets) you get

look at this nice page, which links to www.mumsnet.com.

The hints next to the add a message box show this too. The old syntax still works as well for them as is used to it.
