Top bar advertising

MN, PLEASE fix this advertising bar at the top of the computer screen.

It is so large, that I can't actually click on any of the MN links that are at the top of the page. (eg, active, I'm on, etc).

Right now, on Site Stuff, I can't even click 'Site Stuff' to get other threads in this section. It's hidden by the ad, which is NOT scrolling up and away the way I've seen others do. It's just sitting there. The ONLY threads I can get onto are the active ones on the right hand side of the screen, and only the ones lower down the list as the top ones are hidden by the Ad. (Experian and Marks and Spencers, are the two so far....)

You did this before, we all complained, you apologised and said it shouldn't have been loaded on as you were testing something new. I really hope this was a mistake, because it is IMPOSSIBLE to navigate the site.

You might not be a childish areshole but you do seem very invested in supporting MNHQ and the site yet critiscising other people for being over-invested and not wanting to just leave a site they have invested in.

User843022 · 29/10/2017 17:17

'but valid concerns about ads ruining use, trolls massively infiltrating the site, people being banned for troll hunting when MN moderation does not seem to be doing the job'

Yes you're right, but from what I've seen trolls are getting deleted quicker now and while the ad thing isn't fixed the white list notice has gone so other improvements might also be on the way. I hate the mob mentality of some pbps fangirls that if you think as a chat forum it's not too bad then you must be Justine's pet. It's all a bit pathetic really.

Sorry Brian too many investeds there Grin

Christinayangstwistedsista · 29/10/2017 17:30

No myrtle, not a fan girl or a childish arsehole just someone pointing out the truth. I know the facts are something you struggle with, its much better for you to fabricate to suit your own very weird agenda

Noimbrianfromhull · 29/10/2017 17:35

Yes too many invested! But I think it's odd that you talk about 'fangirls and PBPs' which suggests you have thought about this a lot or at least care a bit. Yet you criticise people for 'over-analysing'.

I just don't get that bit. Someone being accused of being Justines pet and thinking it's 'a bit pathetic' yet talking about fangirls and PBPs. When I was accused of being a sock puppet for Justine I just said 'no loves' and that was it. I'd literally posted 2 posts before, came back and said 'no I'm not Justine' and that was it.

I didn't post about 'mob mentality' and keep on keeping on because it really doesn't matter - especially if you think its ' a bit pathetic'.

And I don't know how long you've been here but there are posters on this thread like mathanxiety who I have more regularly disagreed with than agreed with but I know she's a LT poster that a lot of users respect and if she's saying there is a problem then there is one and she (and others) shouldn't be minimised and told to just get on with it or stop complaining or leave. Or expected to accept MN solutions when they just don't work for them.

And I don't think MNHQ are quicker to delete trolls now at all. NewDaddie for instance was trolling for ages with numerous reports until he left. As is a well known in the 1% poster.

They delete obvious trollery quickly. The rest - not so much.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/10/2017 17:58

can you stop the pages jumping around. It is causing visual issues and I am not able to mn for more than a couple of minutes at a time. (mainly to check out the support threads in SN. the ads at the top were fine when they just stayed the same size. they are now causing a problem. as everything moves about

Has any one looked at it from a disability point of view. particulary the sensory overload with respect to autism?

can you remove the moving ads from the sn board as a reasonable adjustment for those with disabilities?

Lweji · 29/10/2017 18:22

can you stop the pages jumping around.

That's the most annoying issue. And I don't have sensory problems.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 29/10/2017 18:58

I'm still finding it really frustrating and it is stopping me from enjoying using the site. I like to flick from thread to thread and each time there's a five second pause where all I can see is less than a quarter of the screen (using laptop.)

Surely you don't want to run a site which frustrates users so much?

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/10/2017 19:07

I think we all get that it isn't our site and at the end of the day MN can do what it likes.

However it does rely on it's users - no users = no site or loss of advertising revenue etc.

I don't think there is anything wrong with feeding back that changes made to increase revenue are having a detrimental effect on the usability for a lot of people.

MN have previously indicated that it expects users to live with things a while and that in general that means that people get used to the changes and accept them.

To me this is different, I and most of the other users had no issue with the advertising bars as they were, it's the flickyness of the screen and the fact that the box covers a reasonable proportion of the screen that is the problem. I'm having less issues with the mobile app but that causes too much eye strain and I like to be able to MN while "watching" stuff on the PC.

MN either care what we think or they don't, time will tell. There are no demands from me, just feedback.

brasty · 29/10/2017 19:24

The site is not disabled friendly and apparently will not work with most readers.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 29/10/2017 19:56

What happened in the end with the font debacle? I still use a font changer because I have astigmatisms and was told to suck it up when the font changed and was causing me eye strain / pain.

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 29/10/2017 20:14

I was told to suck it up too AnneEyhtMeyer when I complained about the colours - when you could stop choosing the colours you can have, and the background. It made it impossible for me to see easily

ContessaBonessa · 30/10/2017 01:10

THE ADS ARE SO VERY AMAZINGLY FUCKING ANNOYING.

ad blocker being installed immediately.

ContessaBonessa · 30/10/2017 01:13

I could equally say it must be difficult for you to see with your head so far up a few pbps arses but then I'm not a childish arsehole.

Oh dear, you're so very invested it's almost alarming. You're Mumsnet's volunteer attack dog. Your devotion is almost touching.

User843022 · 30/10/2017 07:52

'Oh dear, you're so very invested it's almost alarming. You're Mumsnet's volunteer attack dog. Your devotion is almost touching.'

And yet here you are, 'very invested' in me. Let's all be 'so very invested' together shall we Grin.

Of course I'm 'mn volunteer attack dog' < or, just not a halfwit>.

Ontopofthesunset · 30/10/2017 11:05

It is incredibly annoying to use the desktop site now as an ad covers over half the screen for ages, often obscuring something you had just started to read. It means you frequently end up clicking on the ad because it appears just when you were about to click on a thread. The screen also shifts when this is happening so I keep opening threads I'm not interested in because the screen has 'jumped'. The trouble is that we are making second-long decisions when browsing and a 5-second add is unbelieveably irritating. I don't know what any of the ads are for as they take ages to load too so I basically just have half my computer screen blank obscuring what I was reading.

Austentatious · 30/10/2017 12:41

I've just installed an ad blocker because of the screen being 3/4 filled with ads for a Bryan Adams concert / nissan juke for the majority of the time I'm trying to use the site.
Those ads in themselves suggest someone's algorithm is really f*cked.

brasty · 30/10/2017 12:54

Just to reply to comments above, yes MN can ignore comments, of course they can. But I would advise MNHQ that it might be worth analysing what proportion of users are using adblockers now, and compare it to the proportion before these problems started.

GladAllOver · 30/10/2017 17:58

But I would advise MNHQ that it might be worth analysing what proportion of users are using adblockers now, and compare it to the proportion before these problems started.
You may be sure that they have those figures on a daily basis, as a matter of course. And such numbers will be of far greater significance than the number of users complaining on here.
It's a hard business decision.

LineysRun · 30/10/2017 22:04

Yes, but to blunt, who is analysing the data, and how?

I'm being targeted with a right load of shit lately.

And I really, really resent the gambling site adverts. I'm not interested - but how awful if I were, on a parenting website iykwim?

GladAllOver · 30/10/2017 23:32

Like I said, it's become a business.
In simple terms...

Let X be the money earned from users seeing the adverts
Let Y be the money lost from those who use adblockers.

If (X - Y) is increasing then the adverts are doing their job and will be maintained or even extended.
If (X - Y) is decreasing then the adverts are counter-productive and will be reduced.

That's how it works with every commercial website. Why should MN to be any different?

DressedCrab · 31/10/2017 08:43

Any progress? Or are we supposed to just put up with it?

Lweji · 31/10/2017 09:35

On Android Chrome the stupid ads are causing the bottom buttons to increase in size and only three become visible on screen.
The add is also cut in half.

brasty · 31/10/2017 10:15

Just install an ad blocker. Nothing is going to change

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/10/2017 10:23

I've installed the adblocker bratsy but still have the issue where the screen gets covered in a band of white and it jumps up and down.

MN, in common with virtually all commercial organisations, really don't care, difference is that they pretend that they do in order that people will continue to post and they can sell the advertising for more.

We are as much of the problem as they are tbh. If we just stopped using the site, they'd have to think of a different business model.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 31/10/2017 10:37

I've had an adblocker in place since the skim links (the underlined links in people's posts, is that what they're called?) started, it made reading posts very difficult, and the site look like a spammy mcspam site. Have they stopped now?
