Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Well, at first Ithought it looked quite tidy and fresh.

But it is, in fact, unreadable for me.

whistledown · 16/03/2016 18:30

Too small and faint for my eyes. Granted browsers let you specify a minimum size, but then it's applied everywhere which doesn't work out.

MollyRedskirts · 16/03/2016 18:32

I'm using an ipad and viewing the site in the browser. I'm short-sighted and the font is terrible. It blurs too easily if read at speed (which I do, I'm a fast reader and I can't help it) and when reading large amounts of text.

PLEASE can you give us the option to change it back, or make it more readable?

I don't mind change. I DO mind it when it makes something no longer functionable.

bilbodog · 16/03/2016 18:33

font too small for me as well

BlackeyedSusan · 16/03/2016 18:36

it is horrible. but this is what I said about the last update of font. Grin

takes days to get used to .

I am not sure it is a readable, but that may be just because it looks wrong. may be it is the "a" s which are the wrong proportion.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 16/03/2016 18:37

I'm astounded at how 99% of the site hates the new front, it's more or less unanimous.

MissSueFlay · 16/03/2016 18:41

I doubt 100% of users have commented. I quite like it myself...

OvO · 16/03/2016 18:42

I don't mind the font but it really is too small.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 16/03/2016 18:44

I doubt 100% of users have commented.

Did you have to bring logic into it? Grin

RockUnit · 16/03/2016 18:45

I wonder if the ones that say it's better had problems reading it previously or are just going on aesthetics?

No, I really do find it quite a lot harder to read. I had no problem with reading the old font.

Not for me. Too narrow, too much spacing.
:(

new font is too pale and spidery

I still have a huge white space at the top of the page, above the mumsnet and the search box, appeared a few weeks ago and very irritating as you can't read the first post without scrolling down.

SoupDragon · 16/03/2016 19:04

Why are Actove, TIO and the actual threads all in different fonts/sizes?,Confused

whoops sorry!

RockUnit · 16/03/2016 19:08

What I mean is the ones who are saying the new font is fine - did they find the old one hard to read like we are with this new one?

Oh I see what you mean now.

Must have misread your earlier post because of the new font Grin

From a reputable typography website:

Although serifs are considered to be decorative, their appearance may well serve a higher purpose. Serif typefaces have historically been credited with increasing both the readability and reading speed of long passages of text because they help the eye travel across a line, especially if lines are long or have relatively open word spacing (as with some justified type).

My eyes hurt!

cozietoesie · 16/03/2016 19:18

Can someone remind me?

Where did Customise go?

NewYearNewToads · 16/03/2016 19:21

cozie it's on the drop down next to the talk icon.

steppemum · 16/03/2016 19:22

Also, everything seems very spread out vertically, so you can see fewer lines / posts at a time because each post has more space round it and between the lines. It is annoying, and less easy to navigate.
