Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

'Are we stuck with this?'

I very much doubt it. It is unusable for any length of time. People will really have to give up using it if this goes on so it will have to be changed.

nattyknitter · 16/03/2016 16:27

I'm sorry, but this font is making me feel like I am going crosseyed. I feel quite sick and dizzy reading it. I've just had an eye test that told me I have significantly better than average eyesight for my age.

Excuse me, but I'm off to rest my eyes as you have made me feel quite ill.

AnneOfCleavage · 16/03/2016 16:30

I don't have the pop up boxes with Threads I'm on etc that pop up when I scroll down to save me scrolling right back up to the top anymore. It's been gone a while but thought I'd ask in case you've taken it off for good. I've gone to customise my mumsnet and it's not an option Sad

Where's it gone [wails]

NameChangeIe · 16/03/2016 16:30

Google+, Google Play,YouTube and Google Maps
Adding my voice to the chorus of don't have large bits of text, just words. I'm on ipad Firefox if it helps. Can we have a choose your font customisation?
Looking at MN on my iphone this morning, I thought it had a bug as couldn't stand to read it on the phone.

nemno · 16/03/2016 16:30

ElementaryMyDear There are useful link buttons on the left if you activate 'social media' in 'customise' . They move as you scroll so always available. BUT you do get the social media buttons too.

claig · 16/03/2016 16:32

This reminds me of the Microsoft disaster over Windows 8 where Steve Ballmer eventually had to go as many people were not prepared to "suck it up" and avoided it instead.

AnneOfCleavage · 16/03/2016 16:32

Now I can't find the button I clicked to customise i:e posts per page and the colour of my posts etc - where the heck did I find it as I was just on it Confused

OurBlanche · 16/03/2016 16:34

Mmm! AM I missing some options in Customise, I wonder?

I have 'Ignore' options and these, nothing else:

Messages per Page:
Automatically watch: threads I start threads I post on
Notify me when others post on threads I'm watching: by email

AnneOfCleavage · 16/03/2016 16:34

Arrgg just discovered it at the right of the talk button - phew but I still would like the floating drop down menu for threads I'm on put as an option though if you can shred any light on that.

Thanks in advance Thanks

pointythings · 16/03/2016 16:36

I hate the font. Hate, hate, hate it. It is skinny and grey and not clear.

And the cynic in me suggests that the new and narrowed display of the talk listings exists solely for the purpose of cramming in more adveritising down the side for me to inadvertently click on and then swear at.

nemno · 16/03/2016 16:41

AnneOfCleavage MNHQ removed that a while ago, apparently hardly anyone used it; which I can barely fathom as it was so useful. But I reckon that most users had no idea it was there so never activated it. Now the buttons on the left (if you have social media activated) do some of the same things , I'll still miss 'I'm watching' though and would prefer the viewport (I think that is what it was called) back.

QueenYnci · 16/03/2016 16:43

Another one not finding the new font very accessible, it feels blurred and is giving me a headache.

AnneOfCleavage · 16/03/2016 16:48

nemno oh thank you for letting me know. I have had such trouble with my PC since windows10 got installed that I haven't been on mumsnet as much as usual favouring the ipad instead so thought I'd deactivated it inadvertently. So glad I'm not the only one to miss it and I so do miss it Sad

Please oh wise mumsnet HQ please reinstall it just for nemno and me Grin [pleads]

QueenElizardbeth · 16/03/2016 16:50

Should we see if we agree on the following? :

Font on posts: tone good, font good, size too small

Font in message box: tone too light, font OK, size good

Font in AC or TIO: wrong in every way! tone too light, font UGLY, size a bit too big?

Buttons on left: illegible

Please feel free to disagree!

Samcro · 16/03/2016 16:52

the font is all just wrong

feellikeahugefailure · 16/03/2016 16:53

Sorry where is this customised? Ignore list?! I'd love that.

Indantherene · 16/03/2016 16:53

I really don't like this at all. I can't read it! It would probably be better against a coloured background but skinny letters on white? Nope.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/03/2016 16:56

It's the shape of the font - but I can't work out why - I just find it very hard work to separate the letters.

FreshsatsumaforDd · 16/03/2016 17:01

I can read it more easily if I enlarge it (on iPad) but then the whole line does not fit on the page.

So basically, if it has to be this font, then it needs to be larger.

Sad
FruStefanOla · 16/03/2016 17:03

I thought you said you were going to have this thread 'stickied' in Site Stuff? Well, it isn't - but it should be.

Rummikub · 16/03/2016 17:03

I'm not keen at all on the font. Too faint and difficult to read.

specialsubject · 16/03/2016 17:04

awful on a laptop. The font is really bad and much less readable. The text is the usual OUR READERS ARE STUPID huge so much more clicking and scrolling required. This is what the BBC does, Fisher-Price design with big text and much less information. I want information from websites, not silly big print.

we don't all use tablets. 30% of us don't have brickphones.

oh well, this should help me waste less time on MN. Suggest you get designers who aren't twelve next time or give an option to put it back.

I use the desktop site on my iPad and the font is dreadful on TIO etc. It's not so bad in a thread.

There is no button anywhere for TIO so I'm not seeing any positives whatsoever.
