Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

JustineMumsnet · 16/03/2016 11:09

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

The Rorschach test is easier to decipher

OurBlanche · 16/03/2016 13:39

Make your screen smaller and they should sneak into view top left: Ctrl -

But I am going to have to sign off as this has given me a headache. Most unpleasant.

Sorry MNHQ but it really is unbalanced and needs a quick re-work. If you try changing the contrast first it might make all the difference - as others have agreed, our own posts, in pink/purple etc, are far easier to read. The Active list, TIO too, the blue is far easier to read than the line that has no added colour behind it.

00100001 · 16/03/2016 13:41

I just looked up the difference between typeface and font.... did not know that,

Everyday is a school day :)

claig · 16/03/2016 13:42

Can someone at MNHQ please contact OurBlanche for advice on how to do this correctly!

SweetAdeline · 16/03/2016 13:42

I've always used the desktop site on my iPad (mini) because I preferred the layout but it doesn't look quite right now. The text seems a bit stretched. I've reverted to the mobile site and it's a lot easier to read.

cozietoesie · 16/03/2016 13:42

Justine

In future, might it be a good idea to put a quick banner at the top of pages - as I seem to remember was done during Jeffreygate - alerting people or linking them to Site Stuff? Not everyone automatically goes to this board or to other pages where there might be a sticky and people are, perhaps, a little more edgy these days about sudden changes to sites - eg 'Am I actually on the right one?' Grin

claig · 16/03/2016 13:43

I'm now having trouble seeing the hand in front of my face, but apart from that everything is splendid.

GrouchyKiwi · 16/03/2016 13:43

I use typeface for books and font for computery things.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 16/03/2016 13:45

No, I haven't RTFT, I only came here to stamp my feet, pout and shout 'I don't like it!'.

Hate that 'Trending' is so bloody big and in my face.

Hate the font. Not everyone here is 20 years old with 20/20 vision. Have a care for us oldies with reading glasses please! It's difficult to read, honestly.

On a pc, running Windows 10, Firefox. Not tried on tablet yet.

claig · 16/03/2016 13:47

'On a pc, running Windows 10, Firefox. '

Me too. I have been in the Settings, not knowing what I am doing, and have been seeting things on and off for the past half hour with no effect. Marvellous!

HPsauciness · 16/03/2016 13:47

Agree with most people, this font makes your eyes go funny! Mumsnet was very readable before, now it is not readable! This is a significant problem.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2016 13:48

Discussions of the day is back! Huzzah!!!

Weirdly some of the font is okay to read and some of it looks very "spindly" and appears a bit faint on my Chrome, which often fails to cope with particularly thin fonts.

Text of actual posts is OK. Looks very nice and crisp. Titles in Active, "This is page 3 of 3", text in this reply box, all are spindly.

DarrenHardysDrongo · 16/03/2016 13:49

claig I should be working right now CBA trying to change it just at the minute but will have a go later.
I've done the Shift and + key to get it bigger but that just messes up the size of the webpage.

BertieBotts · 16/03/2016 13:49

And on a slightly :( point the emoticons don't really fit with the new font as they are a little bit pixelated. I actually feel (and please don't evict me from MN!) that the emoji type ones fit better with this font. Which is a bit sad. I wonder if the MN emoticons could be emojified...

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 16/03/2016 13:50

Seriously awful, too skinny, and gift cult to read, at least I will get more done in real life now.

Is that why it was changed, to get us off the site? 🤓

claig · 16/03/2016 13:51

'I've done the Shift and + key to get it bigger but that just messes up the size of the webpage.'

You mean it can actually get worse than what it is now? Don't waste your time, in about a weeks' time someone will probably see sense and change it back.

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 16/03/2016 13:51

^^ see above, can't even preview properly! Should say difficult!

moosemama · 16/03/2016 13:52

I don't mind change, but am seriously unimpressed with this one.

I don't have problems with my eyes, but I really can't stand the new design, it's actually given me a headache. I reckon I'll have to stay of MN until something changes.

The spidery/thin appearance of the text in the message box is particularly bad, but even trying to scan threads to get the gist of what's being said is impossible.

StepAwayFromTheThesaurus · 16/03/2016 13:53

To go against the grain, I like the new font. It looks lovely on my screen.

gladistopped · 16/03/2016 13:55

too small and hard to read :(

MrsLupo · 16/03/2016 13:56

Aesthetically speaking, the new font is very nice. If it was in print, I would love it. As an on-screen font it's tough going, though. Too thin, too much white space, the leading is too wide. I don't have time to study Mumsnet - I need to be able to skim or I just won't bother. I'm not being changeist. I used to read for a living and know a lot about font design and readability. It's a fail from me, I'm afraid.

RatOnnaStick · 16/03/2016 13:57

I think the font is ok though I'd have preferred a slightly bolder one as it is thin but it is also tall which works for my sight issues. I had to shrink the zoom back down to 110% from 125% to read it so that's a bonus. Not so much effort for my eyes as before.

Piffpaffpoff · 16/03/2016 13:58

This font hurts my eyes....

I think I have a solution. Print the entire thread out, staple the pages together and use a x30 magnifying glass.
