Not being funny, but this purple bar thing at the bottom.

I swear it was originally promised to be "only for important threads" and rarely used. Now it seems to be used for any old thing and as such, I'm far more likely to ignore it because most of the things it advertises aren't relevant to me.

OP posts:

It's every day now, a different non-important message/thread every day

Think yourself lucky you get something different. I've had '10 quick and easy meal ideas' for what seems like at least 25 years. Every bastard time I click on anything there it is. 10 quick and easy meal ideas.

I can cook, MNHQ, alright, and I haven't clicked on it the last 4 million times I've seen it so I'm not going to start now.

SarahMumsnet · 25/01/2016 11:33

Hey everyone,

So: we've had a proper dig into this, and our findings/thoughts are twofold:

  1. If you click on the purple bar at all - either on the cross to get rid of it, or on the link to go through to the page - you shouldn't see it again. Tech have checked behind the scenes, and this appears to be working at our end; could we ask, therefore, whether those of you who are seeing the same slider lots of times no matter what you do are looking at MN in a private browser or in incognito mode? If that's the case than you will re-see the bar, unfortunately.

  2. That said, having had a look behind the scenes from an editorial point of view, we agree that, due to a lack of joined-up-ness, we've been overusing the bar. We're going to make sure there's one central person who's keeping an eye on everything that we're linking to this way, so that we don't have 15 different people posting different links at the same time and driving you all nuts as a consequence.

Hope this makes sense - shout if you've any further questions!

No, I"m not using private browsing or incognito or anything like that, just normal ordinary browser. And yet it still keeps coming back, so something is clearly not working properly behind the scenes.

WorraLiberty · 25/01/2016 17:06

It only comes back for me when I log in.

I always log off when I leave Mumsnet, so if I log off/in a few times per day, I'll get the pop up a few times per day.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 25/01/2016 17:14

I don't log off, either. It comes back within the same session, seconds apart, often as soon as I go to a new thread.

Fintan · 25/01/2016 18:04

We were definitely, absolutely, told it would only be for important threads. That was right at the beginning when lots of us said it was a pain in the arse back then.

Tried to use the site last night using my tablet. Was getting the purple bar of extreme irritation every time I opened a new thread. The message last night was very important. Something about '10 fast and easy meal ideas'.
Fed up of it.

Not using private browsing/incognito.

Fintan · 25/01/2016 18:07

Have now RTFT Blush and see I'm not the only one who was getting the meal suggestions yesterday.

Yes Maryz, I came on here to say just the same thing. How is 15 ways to shake up breakfast in any way important enough to need to be brought to all our attentions? I have only seen it once and that was irritating enough.

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/01/2016 09:16

I too am feeling the rage at the 15 empurpled breakfasts on offer this morning.

I don't even eat breakfast Confused

CallMeACynicBut · 26/01/2016 23:59

Just dismissed the same purple bar twice within a few seconds, on the same page: hit cross, it goes away, comes back a few seconds later. Really annoying, happens often. I'm on Firefox on Android right now, but I think I've seen the same thing on other platforms too.

carlajean · 27/01/2016 12:12

glad others feel the same. Can MN tell us why it's important to tell us about breakfast. Like - who cares? It really lets the whole site down IMO

Naoko · 28/01/2016 18:49

It's still here and it's still on about bloody breakfast. Seriously HQ, what gives?

Not being funny, but this purple bar thing at the bottom.
Naoko · 28/01/2016 18:50

AND TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY that same breakfast related bar then came up after the page reloaded from me posting that! It's mocking me!

I've been getting the purple breakfast one today on my phone (via safari), but not on the desktop (chrome)

Lweji · 28/01/2016 20:42

You'd think Maryz, but then one pops in. They're waiting for you to relax.

PeggyBlomquist · 30/01/2016 09:45

I cannot look at 15 ways to shake up breakfast anymore! I have had to give up looking at the site on my phone as it covers half the screen and never goes away. So now I am on my laptop and its Purple bar.. click x ... change page.. Purple ... click x... change page... repeat for all eternity. It has even followed me to this thread!

Fintan · 03/02/2016 10:42

I'm now getting 'Exclusive Offers to your Inbox' .
What a joke, we were promised that the purple bar would only be for important messages. And it was a pain even when it was reserved for 'important messages'.
This is on tablet and laptop too.

LettuceLaughton · 03/02/2016 11:07

yy this purple bar thing is hugely overused whilst the very useful floating navigation bar banished. Most annoying.

CatherineHMumsnet · 03/02/2016 12:04

Hello - sorry it's been driving you mad. We've gone over our systems once again and the offers one on the purple bar shouldn't be showing now. It is supposed to be for important messages, so that was an error on our part.

LettuceLaughton · 05/02/2016 16:33

Does being asked to vote for favourite children's books count as very important too? That's the latest...
