Not being funny, but this purple bar thing at the bottom.

I swear it was originally promised to be "only for important threads" and rarely used. Now it seems to be used for any old thing and as such, I'm far more likely to ignore it because most of the things it advertises aren't relevant to me.

OP posts:
FancyPuffin · 16/01/2016 09:28

Accidentally knocking and getting moved off my page even

Pipistrella · 16/01/2016 09:30

I have had things pop up about threads I'd already hidden.

It can be very intrusive tbh

PseudoBadger · 16/01/2016 09:31

On this very thread....

Not being funny, but this purple bar thing at the bottom.
TheCrowFromBelow · 16/01/2016 15:45

I'm finding these intrusive as well, particularly on the desktop when there's already enough promotion on the right hand side - I don't feel the need for more across the bottom of the page.

IoraRua · 16/01/2016 15:49

I can't stand the bloody purple bar, I give not a shite about what is written on it (even for very worthy posts) - I just want it off my screen. It's very intrusive on mobile and keeps reappearing when I go to a new page.

Fontella · 16/01/2016 15:51

Yep, have to agree.

CoteDAzur · 16/01/2016 15:53

Yes, very annoying. Another one here who doesn't care what's on it and never will.

PenelopePitstops · 16/01/2016 16:01

Yep, I click the cross and the feking thing re appears.

Takes up half the screen what with adverts, the blue bar plus the purple one.

kickassangel · 16/01/2016 16:17

Yep, I hate it. It sometime gets stuck when I scroll quickly and ends up half way down the page, obscuring certain posts.

wickedwaterwitch · 16/01/2016 16:20

I'm not a fan of it either

Naoko · 16/01/2016 17:03

Make it stop. Please. Screen real estate is important, on mobile devices it's at a premium, and you should only usurp it for good reason. If you get this wrong people will stop reading them (which is counterproductive) and get annoyed with you (which you don't want). Doubly so if they come back after you've clicked to hide them. You know what else behaves like that? Intrusive advertising. I don't think you want to end up lumped in with that.

Get rid. And it is triggering.

MajesticSeaFlapFlap · 17/01/2016 13:33

Agree. Ditch the purple bar. Its shit, i keep getting redirected

DiscordiaVanDiemen · 21/01/2016 15:07

Agree, it's irritating and intrusive, especially as you can't get rid of the thing with its persistent reappearance.

Kirkenes · 21/01/2016 20:42

It's really irritating and please don't assume that the fact that people are clinking on it means that they have done it intentionally.

It may LOOK like I've clicked on it a dozen times but I've never clicked on it on purpose.

Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry Angry

.....That's how irritated I am.

SarahMumsnet · 22/01/2016 10:59

Morning folks,

Just coming to update you on this. We totally see your point re anything that could be triggering, and will make sure such things aren't promoted in this way in future. On the wider use of it, we're going to do an audit of how often and why it's used, and see if we're overdoing it; will come back to let you know the results.

Thanks for the feedback, meanwhile

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 23/01/2016 07:55

and what about the point that the cross to get rid of it DOES NOT WORK! That's the most irritating thing about it. It KEEPS coming back, repeatedly, the same one, over and over, the same day, seconds apart. Really. Even if I wanted to click on it, I wouldn't, because I'm so annoyed by then.

TheCrowFromBelow · 23/01/2016 12:01

Grin Crotchet I have come on to say exactly the same thing. Glad I'm not the only one with bar-rage. I've clicked the 10 easy meals one off loads of times. It's even more annoying as I have actually visited that page already and would now like to unvisit it!

WorraLiberty · 23/01/2016 12:40

I have to admit I never read it any more.

As soon as it pops up, I just click the X to get rid of it because I find it irritating.

DawnMumsnet · 23/01/2016 16:27

Hi Crotchet, hi TheCrow,

The bar should in fact be deactivated when you hit the 'x' button. That definitely works for some people, so we're thinking there must be a glitch.

Huge apologies - we'll get our Tech team on the case.

In the meantime, if you could give us a few details about the device you're using to access Mumsnet, that'd be a big help.

CrotchetQuaverMinim · 23/01/2016 18:12

I've complained about the problem every time the bar has started up again, and it never changes no matter how many times tech looks into it!!

The cross closes it initially, but then when you go back to the page (e.g., list of topics), the same bar comes up. Or if you go into a different thread.

I'm on Firefox, on a Mac.

DoomGloomAndKaboom · 23/01/2016 18:23

"On the wider use of it, we're going to do an audit ..... see if we're overdoing it"

You are overdoing it.

It's really annoying and i've not once clicked on it to open whatever it is, unless accidentally. I don't look to see what it says now, I just click it gone.

If I wanted an annoying purple thing popping up on my laptop I'd get a Barney screensaver.

Please can we opt out?

YoureGonnaHearMeRoar · 23/01/2016 18:26

It's every day now, a different non-important message/thread every day. This is not what we were told it would be used for! It's really annoying.

WorraLiberty · 24/01/2016 10:09

Because of this thread, I decided to actually read it before I hit the X button today.

"10 quick and easy meal ideas"

Yes, to put it mildly, that is overdoing it.
