Dear MNHQ could we have a new Topic please?

We'd like a Survival/Prepper topic please, if that's possible. Somewhere where we can discuss prepping, techniques, exchange ideas, etc. Not just for the Zombie Apocalypse, a serious topic where we can collate our plans and ideas.

Many thanks

Lots of love

Stratters Wine

someone put me out my misery and tell me whats the joke here, as usual I've missed it

takes me all my time to survive Asda on a Saturday afternoon

Toooldtobearsed · 21/03/2015 14:33

From my perspective, I am not arsed about zombie attacks, nuclear wipeout etc., but I live in a remote area and we regularly lose power for several days during the winter.
After 10 years here, I have just about cracked it, what to have to hand, what food stores well etc., but would still find it interesting to learn more and gather new ideas.

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 21/03/2015 14:59

Agree. If there are too many topics that noone uses, sort it out and delete them.

And while i personally love a bit of zombie prep, it'll be helpful from the view of helping people have a buffer for real situations (say a problem with pay or benefits/snow/drought/powercut) rather than just the catastrophic kind of prepping

Chuffingelves01 · 21/03/2015 16:05

I feel we need this topic, the chat thread will be deleted after 90 days and there is so much useful information on there.

Look at what's going in around the world with the weather, terrorist attacks, etc it's common sense to be prepared.

cozietoesie · 21/03/2015 18:06

Or you could simply retitle one of the existing but lesser used boards?

How about the Royal Family in Other Stuff ? Doesn't seem to have been posted on for a month - and there's a certain elegance (not to mention a delicious irony) in changing that title to Survival, I think.

TheMoa · 21/03/2015 18:11

I think it's a great idea.

Americans, Canadians, and other people who live in places with actual weather could post sensible things, to give the board a sense of legitimacy.

The rest of us could plan vicariously. Grin

If there's currently a thread in chat, we can move it so it's not deleted. Do report it.
THanks

Stratter5 · 21/03/2015 19:27

I'll go and report it :)

Thanks Stratter5

The other thread has made for some funny but very interesting reading and actually, I feel it is a good idea for us all to be prepared for a disaster. Natural or otherwise.

Our own government (not UK) advises us to have a 2 week worth of supplies in the house. I haven't even got one day at the moment.

A survival topic will be very handy for everyone.

Stratter5 · 22/03/2015 00:59

I appreciate that a few of you think it's ridiculous, however there are plenty of topics that I don't use, or go on, and I wouldn't denigrate them purely because they're of no interest to me.

There's lots of topics gathering dust, the Ebola one is pretty defunct now, for starters. And the advantage of having a separate topic would mean those who are interested would have a place to post, where the threads wouldn't disappear after 30 days. AIBU isn't really relevant, and threads go in Chat.

Can it be called The Oh Fuck Rucksack please, or The OFRS if you want to be polite. Pretty please.

didyouwritethe · 22/03/2015 02:11

Ha - I was just coming on to say it MUST be called The Oh Fuck Rucksack.

Worth having this as a topic just so we get the name.

HicDraconis · 22/03/2015 02:18

Excellent idea. I live in an earthquake zone (NZ South Island) and we are supposed to have all sorts of emergency preparedness at home. Would be very interested in a preppers topic.

Hoping the zombies won't be able to reach as far as here though.

Opopanax · 22/03/2015 08:18

I would love this topic. I find it fascinating and always enjoy the threads that spring up related to it.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 22/03/2015 08:23

This is a sterling idea Stratters and must be called OFRS!

It's no more ridiculous than the Christmas topic Wink

ssd · 22/03/2015 08:50

or the royal family topic

TheWindowDonkey · 22/03/2015 20:24

Not at all ridiculous...look at how many of us spend time discussing what we'd do and spend good money insuring agaist all other factors of life (and death). A natural disaster/health epedemic/exteme weather are common enough to merit discussion and preperation! Please let us have the topic MN, we'll put some chcolate hobnobs in the stash to send to hq when the SHTF!

Jaded2004 · 22/03/2015 20:29

Just adding support for the topic. I'm currently to unwell to run away from the zombies and could do with all the help I can get Wink

Oodear · 22/03/2015 20:42

Yes I think a topic would be a great idea.
Lots of topics can be combined as they are under used & hq doesn't want to move every thread to them so they get even less use.

didyouwritethe · 22/03/2015 22:16

I need Poldark's horses to carry my OFRS. Oh yes.

Stratter5 · 23/03/2015 00:38

I'd settle for Poldark himself

Judging by some of the views expressed on this thread, maybe it's time to have a good look at the number of topics and refine them anyway? I'm sure that some of the boards are only used very occasionally - if that. (MNHQ will doubtless have stats available to them.) It needs to happen every so often or topics burgeon.

Stratter5 · 23/03/2015 10:23

I've posted in the relevant topic before now, and had to wait days for even one answer, it was something to do with housekeeping.

Same stratters, mine was in general health and i'd given up and gone to the doctor (not that i expect mn to replace a gp, but i have health anxiety and my mh appreciates a thumbs up before i bother my gp) by the time i had a response.

BeyondDoesBootcamp · 23/03/2015 10:30

(And housekeeing and generral health are two of the more used topics!)

cozietoesie · 23/03/2015 11:15

The other night, I had a proper look at the 'front page' of Talk Topics and there were a whole load that I didn't know existed - some of which might well have been of interest to me if I had found them.

If MN are to consider a Survival page, perhaps its inception should be part of a general topic revamp/cull. The site could certainly do with it - how many times do people post (knowingly and wrongly) on eg AIBU stating 'For Traffic' because they already know the futility of posting on certain boards and receiving any sort of timely response?
