Mumsnet mafia ??!!!

Am a really new poster to Mumsnet having just found out I am pregnant for the first time EDD June 1st, have been surfing the site and making a few posts but have been very surprised by the amount of vitriol in some of the posts on certain subjects, and am amazed about people outing other people and everyone seems to know everyone elses business - more than you might expect on a forum? How does that work?? Is there like a bunch of people who all live in the same road or something? Just wondering as on most forums I post on there are lots of people sharing views but it rarely gets that personal inn terms of people getting to know other people off line. Made me wonder if there is a Mumsnet mafia in place!! Makes me alightly concerned about posting my thoughts and feelings about the things that are happening to me and about how my privacy will be respected.

MN is far more like RL than anyone realises, people may be more 'open' and vociferous when anonymous, but they also form bonds, feel offended, there are still 'real' people 'behind' the names etc.

Yeah Charly that was a bit near the bone. You dont know the situation so dont go slagging people. Are you whiter than white? You wouldnt catch me walking onto a forum like this and slagging people - heaven forbid.

To be perfectly honest, all joking aside (but with no intention of being actually nasty).. I can't quite work you out WB. I have always read your posts with amusement in the past, and often with respect.. but the night you named and shamed, with no thought to the innocent parties.. then balatantly admitted to having lots and lots of fun on the thread.. and then said that YOU TOO had been on the receiving end of a cheating other-half, I was left quite incredulous.. and confused by your motives.

Not that it matters what I think obviously. I am just stating it anyway.

charlyp, I'm new here too, found Mumsnet after a friend mentioned it in connection with a product review for a car seat! Although I admit, I have lurked a fair bit before posting (shame on me). I know what you mean, it seems like a lot of mums know each other really well, but I kind of thought that was just from the sheer length and scope of them posting. All the recent hoo ha, I don't understand, and don't really want to, so have steered well clear.

I do kinda wonder how some of the old-timers feel about us newbies, because it seems there has been some unpleasant things going on lately, but you guys Mumsnet has been in the press a fair bit of late so people do find out about it. We're not all provacative lurkers who emerge when things get ugly. I reckon you just become more aware then.

newly pregnant (hope thats an ok term), confused, looking for support since none of my friends know and at 34 am worried about the scan, reading other peoples experience, onfused about what the hell is going to happen to me, my relationship, my family, and now someone who a bunch of other people think its hilarious to take the piss out of

I meant no offese by use of the term mafia ... i retract it, I was looking for a thread title that would get sufficient attention that people whould tell me about how it works, not meaning to offend anyones delivate sensibilities
