Fight clubs on mumsnet

Is it just me or has there been a significant shift in the ethos of this site where 'fight clubs' are now tolerated wherever they spring up? There is a real nasty undercurrent running through a few parts of this site & it's just unpleasant to read through.

Are the mods all barricading themselves in bunkers or something, hoping it'll all blow over?

You cannot seriously be arguing that it's ok for threads where a group of posters are sniping/griping/bitching about another group of posters to stand? And its ok because the bitching goes both ways? That's completely nuts!

I'm amazed if its being left to stay ... surely hq have to do something about it? Down with this sort of thing!

I'm amazed that thread in OTBT has been allowed to stay.

It would not have been allowed in the olden days.

We feel that some of the threads being discussed here are, in amongst some of the unkind comments, providing a valuable space for support. For that reason, we're inclined to let them stand, but we will take a close look at them and bear in mind your concerns.

SP was a hideous, festering pit of child-hatred. It did need sorting out and I'm really pleased that people are doing so.

I used to feel frightened for some of the SC under discussion, because step mothers were always told how right and justified they were, with young girls being called "mini-wives" and other such nastiness. I'm very glad that's being countered.

I unwittingly wandered in to a discussion the other day, I had read the thread but not the weeks of build up to it, I wasn't aware of that why would I be?

I thought the OP was becoming a bit goady and said so and was immediately jumped upon by a number of other posters, I then discovered later what had gone on before. So I apologised thinking I had come late into it and thought I was seeing something else.

I now find from that thread that I was quite right to see goading, full of comments about things kicking off, see if anyone's 'biting', accusations of sockpuppeting, where is so and so, anyone reporting that, nice tag team work and such. It's all running along side the posting on other threads as it happens.

No, it's not nice to be talked about so blatantly, and I'm disgusted it's been allowed to run, regardless of the history leading to it.

That's an interesting summary Zoe, if a bit one-sided.

It is quite right to say that a line has been unwittingly crossed, and I apologise for that.

However, i'd invite anyone reading your summary of thread in question to look for themselves.

And at the one on which you accused me of goadiness.

Anyone who reads the thread can (I hope) see that the intent was to prevent a more positive view of stepfamilies being shouted down.

That seems a reasonable purpose to me.

I am fully prepared to take the justified criticism on the chin because to an extent we fucked up.

Hi all,

Apologies for taking a while to get to the bottom of all of this.

We are removing one of the threads now. We'd like MN to be an excellent place for parents from all walks of life to come and chat about anything and everything.

We are totally aware that there will be disagreements along the way and that is all a part of it but we hope that people can be civil and respectful of others, sometimes very different, views and not feel the need to start threads to discuss them but rather (respectfully) have it out on the original thread.

We like to keep deletions to a minimum as we are all grown-ups here but we will step in and remove threads and posts that break the guidelines.

We do think that SP have been through the mill of late but we hope that the issues raised have now been aired and everyone can move on. Whether that's together or in groups, either is fine as long as people are respectful of each other.

Please do report anything to us that you think we need to see or that crosses the line and we will take a look.
