Is there any way I can hide the new ruddy 'pin it' etc column on the left hand side?

It's driving me demented.

It was baad enough on the desktop, but now I'm on the laptop with touch screen, they are exactly where I always touch the screen to scroll down. I hate that they stay in view as you scroll down the page, and I hate the way they flicker down the screen when you access a page.

Why should I have to change the dimensions of the display to get rid of them (even if I knew how!!)?

MyLittleFinger · 16/05/2014 17:46

I'm on Firefox and have clicked the ABP button at top right hand side of the page. It has gone, hurray!

alcibiades · 16/05/2014 21:18

Have they been switched off? (Maybe to give Tech some time?)

They were definitely there earlier, and I found them very irritating, especially as they seemed to interfere with the loading of pages. Also, if I accidentally hovered the cursor over them, it took a brief but noticeable amount of time for the pop-up option to disappear once I'd moved the cursor away.

But now they don't seem to be there, on any page. I don't think it's anything I've done, as I only transferred from Firefox to Pale Moon yesterday, and I haven't (yet!) fiddled with any settings, nor in AdBlocker either.

exexpat · 16/05/2014 22:02

Yay! They have disappeared on my mac. Hope it stays that way.

Mintyy · 16/05/2014 22:05

Ahhhh, that's better.

AKeyFox · 16/05/2014 23:19

Another workaround is to magnify/zoom the screen about 30%.

BertieBotts · 17/05/2014 00:24

It does seem to have been switched off :)

I think the "static" thing is confusing some people? It's web terminology. If you think of the web page as a physical page then it's not static in those terms. In web design terms if something is static then it doesn't move - like your address bar.

Problem is (as a user) I and I think most web users tend to think of a web page, especially a very plain or text-based one like mumsnet, like a physical piece of paper which you are pushing up away from you as though it is on a reel. So something which stays in place and doesn't scroll away feels like it's hanging in front, on its own layer, or can give the impression that the "static" item is moving, rather than the page itself which is moving. Now, okay, this impression is worse when you have one which sort of "bounces" as you scroll, but it still feels and looks intrusive because it feels like it is a totally separate item on top of the "paper" if you like. It doesn't matter if it's not intruding onto the text, it's still affecting the impression of the white space.

Although, to be fair, I remember when the white space at the sides was introduced and lots disliked it - it seems we've got used to it now and don't want to see it go Grin

Have they been switched off? Thanks for listening MNHQ! Smile Cake Wine

MakeMeJumpIntoTheAir · 17/05/2014 08:38

I've got it half off the page on my macbook. Irritating. I'd prefer to see the icons under the end of each thread.

Still there on mine

WhereBeThatBlackbirdTo · 18/05/2014 08:05

It's gone. Yay!

LeBearPolar · 18/05/2014 09:34

Not gone for me. I can still Pin It, Tweet, fLike or g+1 (whatever the hell that is).

Haven't felt the urge to do any of these things...

Bunbaker · 18/05/2014 17:03

It's gone for me

cozietoesie · 18/05/2014 19:07

LeBear

I don't think they've turned it off completely - what they've done is connect it to the 'Turn off Social Media' function in 'Customise'. I say that because I just tested it by going into Customise and turning the Social Media back on - and Lo and Behold there was the button column on the left. (It's now back off again.)

Could you check on Customise that you've turned off Social Media?

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 18/05/2014 19:09

Sorry if I didn't explain that well - doing 16 things here.

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 18/05/2014 19:39

That would be the 'Hide the Social Media' toggle switch right at the bottom of Customise - just above the Save button.

OP posts:
alcibiades · 18/05/2014 19:43

I've just checked "Customise" and "Social Media" was off, so I turned it on, and the pin-it thingy came back (so I switched it off again). I don't recall ever looking that far down the "Customise" page, so I wouldn't have changed anything there.

Perhaps it was a glitch that over-rode the Customise choices?

Those options are only available for the Mumsnet New style, so that might be why some people are still seeing it, and some aren't.

squoosh · 18/05/2014 19:44

Thanks, managed to get rid of it!

cozietoesie · 18/05/2014 19:48

Yes - it does depend on you being on Mumsnet New so you might have to move to that to get rid of it. (You win some and you lose some - as do MNHQ.)

OP posts:
LeBearPolar · 18/05/2014 19:48

Oh, it's gone! The joy!

Thank you, cozietoesie Thanks

alcibiades · 18/05/2014 19:51

Meant to say: thanks, cozietoesie. I'd forgotten about Customise until you mentioned it. I'm sure there are more options there than when I last looked.

cozietoesie · 18/05/2014 19:53

I suspect that the days of MN maintaining 4 separate MN styles are numbered - if I were Tech, I'd be moaning about it at every meeting I attended. Wink

Maybe now is the time for people to check out the Mumsnet New style if they're not already on it.

OP posts:
RowanMumsnet · 19/05/2014 09:59

Hello - yes the 'hide social media' link in Customise will now hide the social sharing buttons at the side.

FidelineandFumblin · 19/05/2014 09:59

Jeez. Now have cluttery wide side bars of MN cook book, shouty, music blaring Fiat ad AND the pin it menu.

Too noisy all round.
