A dedicated vaping topic?

magimedi · 12/04/2014 15:47

Please, MNHQ, could we have one? I'm sure you are aware of how many more people vape nowadays & what a great way it is to give up smoking.

In six months we have had five threads about vaping see here & they are filling up faster & faster. More & more people aretaking up vaping as opposed to smoking & are wanting information.

Starting vaping can be a bit complicated & we could separate the information within a thread so that it was far more easily available for everyone to use.

Hope you'll agree & we can have our dedicated "Nest of Vapers"!

If you're nervous you could always write a disclaimer at the top. But consider how many people this has helped to give up smoking. This has got to be a good thing.

Raia · 16/04/2014 12:31

Whatadrama, that's a great idea to have a Quit Smoking topic so as not to be seen to promote vaping if MN have the nadgers about that Smile

magimedi · 16/04/2014 14:00

Whatadrama - Brilliant solution to any possible problems.

Sole, love your bimp! May I do likewise? Grin

Bimp!

There. That felt good.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 16/04/2014 21:12

Bimpety bimp Smile

Yes that's a good solution if you're nervous mnhq. We could get all competitive with the Allen Carr crowd Grin

I don't think there's a need to be nervous really though. There seems to be a distinct change for the better in the way the media are treating us the last few weeks and nhs stop smoking services are starting to run pilot projects with vapers.

DawnMumsnet · 16/04/2014 23:03

Hi folks,

Just letting you know we are here and listening - just up to our necks in the aftermath of blooming Heartbleed, so everything's taking a little longer than usual...

Please bear with us Easter Grin

magimedi · 16/04/2014 23:09

Flowers - very aware of all the heartbleed crap!

Wine (not really a bribe!)

Yes please, I posted on the first couple of threads but they fill up so quickly! It makes sense to have a dedicated topic.

Shonajay · 17/04/2014 09:19

Please! It would be so helpful x

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 17/04/2014 09:27

Why do you post in aibu? Not goady, just curious. Is it the perennial traffic thing?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/04/2014 09:54

The original thread was a real aibu question and it kind of morphed into a support thread. We have stayed there partly for the traffic, partly so threads don't disappear as they would in chat, and partly because we don't yet have a vaping topic Wink

RowanMumsnet · 17/04/2014 09:58

Very sorry - this week ended up getting completely taken over by Heartbleed related stuff (our mail volume increased by about 600%...) so all non-essential stuff has gone by the board. And now we're going into the Bank Holiday weekend. So we may not have an answer on this for you until next week, sorry - that's not a bad sign, it's just that this week has been so weird.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/04/2014 10:02

non-essential??? Easter Shock

Have a great easter break, Rowan and all at MNHQ, you deserve it!

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 17/04/2014 11:35

Just wondered why you'd continue to brush shoulders with the riff raff of Aibu and not use general health or other subjects for example. There are Too Many topics on here. May I suggest you change your plea to can I swap out a topic and replace it with vaping? I further suggest they sacrifice aibu in order to further your noble cause.

Disclaimer: I don't know what vaping is. Something to do with smoking?

Allergictoironing · 17/04/2014 12:06

Hi Raxa. That came over as just a little bit sniping? If you genuinely don't know anything at all about a subject then maybe you could try to find out a bit before having a dig....

Vaping is using an e-cig or similar device usually to replace smoking. Though the vaper is still able to get the nicotine "hit" if they want, all the harmful effects of the combustion products (near enough ALL the harm caused by smoking tobacco) are eliminated as nothing is being burnt. It tends to be much more successful than other smoking cessation methods as it allows the vaper to keep the hand to mouth habit - which can be as hard to give up as the actual nicotine addiction. There are literally millions of people in the EU alone who will now no longer die from smoking as they have replaced it with vaping.

A dedicated vaping topic?
Raxacoricofallapatorius · 17/04/2014 15:31

I wasn't sniping at all. I was genuinely curious. I have AIBU hidden and have never seen one of your vaping threads and have no idea what vaping is or why it started as and AIBU. I know what an e-cig is though, just never heard the term vaping, assumed it was something to do with smoking simply because somebody mentioned it upthread. Any sniping you detected was my poor attempt at a joke re how many topics there are on MN and how catch-all AIBU is despite this Grin. I love how inclusive it is, a topic for everything. I fully support your endeavours as it makes the site much easier to use. Really, no offence at all meant. I wondered what vaping was and what it had to do with AIBU. Grin

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 17/04/2014 15:33

Might look up your vaping thread. I heard the tail end of a discussion on the radio the other day about e-cigs and safety trials. Sounded interesting.

Allergictoironing · 17/04/2014 15:47

Oh OK, sorry I misunderstood Sad.

It started with a typical AIBU thread. There ended up being a wealth of information on it so the OP decided that when the thread was full rather than starting a new one in Chat (where it would all be lost in the long run) she would start the next one in AIBU as well. It generally seems a good idea that we use somewhere with fairly high traffic, as more people get to hear about the health benefits and advantages of vaping compared to smoking that way - and to try to educate people in general about a somewhat mis-understood subject Grin.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 17/04/2014 18:31

Can I ask if it completely does away with cigarette cravings? I have never, ever even tried smoking but imagine e-cigarettes are a different taste, feeling etc? Does the nicotine hit fulfil the cravings for the associated behaviours? My v good friend started smoking at 16 and we're both 33 now and she won't try patches or vaping because she says her addiction isn't just nicotine but the burn, the social huddling together, the taste etc. I wish she could stop. If she tried vaping, reckon she'd be surprised?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/04/2014 18:59

Yes I think she'd be very surprised Smile

It is different from smoking, the technique is different and it tastes different even if you use a 'tobacco' flavour (can't really replicate the taste of combustion) but the sensation of vapour is not dissimilar to smoke, you get a 'throat hit' - one of the things lots of smokers miss - and of course the hand-to-mouth thing is still there and you get the visual cue of puffing out a cloud. Once she's found kit that suits her and a suitable strength of liquid she would probably find it satisfying enough to stop smoking.

Sadly you can't nag or cajole anyone out of smoking until they are ready but if she is at all curious, maybe send her a link to the latest vaping thread (or the shiney new vaping topic if we have one by then).

Cantabile · 17/04/2014 19:00

Raxa, she would be surprised at how satisfying it is. Lots of people start vaping just out of curiosity and smoke too for the first couple of weeks, and then find that without even trying they have cut down the cigarette consumption to oly one or two a day and are haing a huge amount of fun vaping different flavours, saving lots of money, feeling fitter, breathing easier and looking better, without even noticing! Many people hang onto a few fags a day (Easter Blush), but many here have not only stopped smoking completely and only vape, but have also cut down on the nicotine strength they vape.

It is a surprisingly easy way to give up smoking.

She won't do it until she's ready though.

Raia · 17/04/2014 19:07

I was a lot like your friend Raxa, very resistant to stopping smoking for the same reasons. I had a puff on a friend's vaporiser and the throat hit sold it to me instantly. Stopped smoking altogether after 24 hours of vaping. It's like a magic wand! I still get to go through the motions of smoking and I still go outside to smokers' corner, so there's really nothing to miss. Amazing.

BrianTheMole · 17/04/2014 19:20

I swapped straight to vaping as soon as I bought the vapouriser. I didn't intend to stop smoking that day, but I just did. I had a roll up off a friend recently when my battery went flat, and it tasted pretty much the same to me. Although the roll up was stinkier.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/04/2014 19:39

I was the same as your friend too, I bought the vapouriser as a family member who was a heavy smoker, quit over night and I was curious. I quit with the first puff of the vapouriser and I have now been cigarette free for over a month and a half and have halved the nicotine content that I am vaping. They are amazing IMO, it has been painless and I feel worlds better (and now know why there are so many threads complaining about the stink from fags). DP also quit the same day as me using a vapouriser and since then we have converted another 2 family members!

We were all err commited smokers.
