Swearing. Why?

dummad · 23/04/2013 13:21

I'n not averse to the odd 'FFS' or whatever, but it seems to me that the use of the C word is now commonplace on every thread nowadays. And i don't like it one bit.

It never used to be like this. Why the cultural shift? I never hear it spoken out loud so why is it suddenly ok to plaster it all over MN?

Is it suddenly 'en vogue' to sound like a drunken navvy? Words like cunt, snatch, twat etc are just vile. Can't we reign it in a bit?

OP posts:
AmazingBouncingFerret · 23/04/2013 18:15

Now that's the way to do it OP!

Grin

Well done.

twentythirteen · 23/04/2013 18:16

Um, this has all got a bit harsh, and I do like a reasonable bit of exchange of views so I'll duck back out. I'll just leave this Biscuit pie for throwing...

WTFisABooyhooISBooyhoo · 23/04/2013 18:18

Grin @ OP sudden overuse of the swearwords she was so disappointed in the rest of us for using! very good OP. very good. Grin

RandallPinkFloyd · 23/04/2013 18:18

You've been on MN for years yet you've only just noticed the swearing? Really? I find that very hard to believe.

And for the record you didn't just ask if it was the norm, you asked if we could "reign(sic) it in a bit".

That's not "expressing a viewpoint" that's asking a humongous forum to do what you want them to do.

Then when HQ responded you were rude to them. That's a big bag of not on right there.

Anyway, the Christmassy cunt thing is still entertaining me, so I'm very glad I clicked on the thread!

SPsYoniTheOneAndOnly · 23/04/2013 18:18

Dum Grin Well done! That's how you fucking do it! Its a great word isn't it?

And state of me because I told you to fuck off with that shit? Grin I didn't just pitch in either. I have been here since the start.

BIWI · 23/04/2013 18:19

Oh dear, dummad! How virtuous of you.

This is an adult site, and sometimes people swear. Sometimes they swear a lot. Sometimes they use the baddest swear words there are. Like cunt.

But most times, actually, they don't.

They're all coming out in force on this thread because this is a very old chestnut on MN and it's really irritating to have to keep making the same argument about why swearing is acceptable here - as long as it's not in the context of a personal attack.

Go and have a read of some of the more serious threads - in relationships, for example, and actually - baring 'leave the bastard' and 'he's being a twat/cunt' - there's very little swearing, and certainly not swearing for comic effect, which is what most of it is.

The more people say they hate swearing, the more swearing is going to happen.

Oh, and if somebody called you a cunt, then you would be absolutely right to be offended by that, and it would be construed by MNHQ as a personal attack and deleted. But choosing to be offended by other people's use of a word is daft. Because, as others have already said, everyone has words that they don't like, and therefore it's entirely subjective.

RandallPinkFloyd · 23/04/2013 18:20

Blimey, x-post.

usualsuspect · 23/04/2013 18:20

Oh my, op has lost it.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 23/04/2013 18:20

She's currently rocking in the corner muttering cunt over and over.

Wereonourway · 23/04/2013 18:22

I didn't use the word cunt until I joined mumsnet.

I wouldn't say it out loud, but then again I don't shout leave the bastard or talk about yoni massage out loud either.

In fact, when posting about my arsehole ex, another poster christened him cuntychops. That is now his name in my phone. Everytime he rings or texts a very unflattering pic flashes up and CUNTYCHOPS flashes in capitals letters.

It's fabulous, and has made me smile if nothing else. So I'd quite like to use the word cunt, each to their own I suppose

SPsYoniTheOneAndOnly · 23/04/2013 18:22

She just needed someone to pull the cunt out of her it seems. It was always there just needed a push Grin

usualsuspect · 23/04/2013 18:22

May I suggest a cup of chamomile tea OP?

Tee2072 · 23/04/2013 18:23

Mumsnet Addendum to Godwin's Law:

As soon as you comment on the 'state' of the children posters are raising, you've lost the argument.

HQ, can we have that added to TGs?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 23/04/2013 18:23

"pull the cunt out of her" that's a horror film waiting to be made that is...

SPsYoniTheOneAndOnly · 23/04/2013 18:24

Oh Jesus! That's sounds wrong!

I knew what I meant

Tee2072 · 23/04/2013 18:24

Yeah, SP...rephrasing may be in order there...

AmazingBouncingFerret · 23/04/2013 18:25
Grin
usualsuspect · 23/04/2013 18:25

Yep,the I feel sorry for your children is a low blow on MN.I'm surprised the op didn't know that what with being here years and shit.

WTFisABooyhooISBooyhoo · 23/04/2013 18:26

Grin @ SP! it took me a few reads to get what you meant!

SPsYoniTheOneAndOnly · 23/04/2013 18:26

I think she has exploded tbh.

I meant the word cunt was there. Wording is everything it seems Grin

OP I have reported your outrageous, expletive-filled --not
to mention hypocritical-- PA on SP.

So there.

SPsYoniTheOneAndOnly · 23/04/2013 18:29

Then tell them SP told me to do it in the spirit of MN

I feel honoured. If you want you can name it 'doing a SP' Grin

Liberate yourself Dum

usualsuspect · 23/04/2013 18:30

Op has malfunctioned,it's all your fault SP,you cunt.

I just taught my kindle the word cunt.

WTFisABooyhooISBooyhoo · 23/04/2013 18:31

we have a saying where i'm from. it seems apt.

"get it outta ya big girl"
(or lad if it's a male and the 'big' part is used to imply you're trying to be big by having a wee ranty explosion and has no relevance to your physical size)
