Mumsnet Local: you don't need a different nickname any more, so please go and look, add listings, post on Local Talk, gasp in general appreciation!

Hello. After a lot of thought and a fair bit of moaning from you folks, we have realised that insisting on everyone having a special Local nickname that's different from their normal Talk nickname is probably not the best idea.

We know a lot of you like the idea of keeping your regular Talk nickname separate from your Local nickname - and that's still fine.

But if you don't mind having the same name in both places, that's now also fine, too.

So, if you haven't already had a good chinwag in Local Talk, please do feel free to do so now. And why not add some listings while you're there?

All you need to do is hit the blue Local tab in the "navigation bar" up there^^

Enjoy!

@GreatGooglyMoogly

When you revamped Local, did it delete all of the existing listings (other than talk)?

We talked about migrating them initially, but the new site listings ask for different fields and it was going to be a nightmare trying to merge them.

o for goodness sake. This is rubbish. I did as was directed and clicked on local. I am given a big map. I can see Bristol on it, when I attempt to click on Bristol I am told to go to Gloucester. I put Bristol in the search box and get a load of listings for Blaise Castle etc.

What is the point of this? Why on earth did we lose the old site?

If you click on the sections button and select local it's fairly quick to get there, redwelly.

Wips, feel free to add things to Belfast!

I'm the local editor and I'm doing my best but there's only so many hours in the day.

for the Colchester and maybe Chelmsford etc sites is it worth partnering with the marvellous Essex Mums which carries detailed listings? Also kidaround v useful for finding out what's on in the area.

I think others have previously commented that the local site for this region is underused because of the existing listings but a signpost to those 2 sites on the MN local site might help new mums / mums new to the area find suitable groups and classes.

Could you agree some sort of click through referral rate maybe?

One suggestion though is could you perhaps group the local topics together by region. As someone who accesses the site by iPhone and has local site starting with W it takes ages to scroll down and I give up.

Just a thought for us non PC users.

I was supposed help more when we first had mumsnet local but I left...

Looks good mine has RL people and everything, meet ups, I think they are young child meet ups, maybe I need to have another child. Hmm Or borrow a younger one for a day! Everyone has robotic names on mine too like R2D2, I think I need to change mine to 'fit in'!

I would be more inclined to gasp in appreciation if there was any sign of Ireland being clickable. I can see it sitting there teasing me but nada :(

Not ideal but to avoid the endless scrolling down on the ipad, I've added my local site to 'my topics'

I think you must have clicked on Gloucestershire rather than Bristol on the map. Try the direct link

Yes. I am aware of that. I tried clicking on Bristol to no avail. I then put 'bristol' into the search box and got a load of listings for Blaise castle.

I am sorry but I don't think this is down to my failings. The site seems very difficult to navigate. It ought to be a simple click. And it isn't. At least not for me.

Hi Blondie, we haven't got a Local Editor in all areas yet and Essex is one of those without, so it might be a bit quiet until we do, but we're getting there. We'll have a look at those sites, thanks for the tip.

We agree with you about the search box and changes to that are on the tech list. We weren't trying to point out failings, just suggesting what might have happened. Bristol is hard to click on unless you magnify the map because it's a small area. Did you manage to get there with the link? Bristol is one of our busier sites so it's worth a look.
