Mumsnet Local: you don't need a different nickname any more, so please go and look, add listings, post on Local Talk, gasp in general appreciation!

Hello. After a lot of thought and a fair bit of moaning from you folks, we have realised that insisting on everyone having a special Local nickname that's different from their normal Talk nickname is probably not the best idea.

We know a lot of you like the idea of keeping your regular Talk nickname separate from your Local nickname - and that's still fine.

But if you don't mind having the same name in both places, that's now also fine, too.

So, if you haven't already had a good chinwag in Local Talk, please do feel free to do so now. And why not add some listings while you're there?

All you need to do is hit the blue Local tab in the "navigation bar" up there^^

Enjoy!

If I had my name set as something different on local how do I change it back to the same one as now?

HelenMumsnet · 24/01/2013 17:41

You're welcome to keep the separate names, if you'd like, wannabedomesticgoddess. As we've said, it has many advantages.

But if you have already chosen a Local name and are actually really keen to use the same name in Local and on main Talk, please mail [email protected] with Local User Name in the subject title - and we'll see what we can do for you.

I went and looked!

I always forget about local, our area has never really been used. We have a long running thread on here that we hang out on and sometimes newbies walk in, not sure they would on local. We had 3 last week wanting to meet us for cake, 3 newbies! But then it snowed and we cancelled cake. I want cake. But everything in my house is being all wholesome and healthy because I'm doing the wholegrain challenge. It is a sad, sad tale.

droitwichmummy · 24/01/2013 17:53

That's better! Its a bit quiet on the worcestershire one though

xkcdfangirl · 24/01/2013 18:09

Hurrah for you! Thank you MNHQ we love you Thanks

wannabedomesticgoddess · 24/01/2013 18:49

Thanks Helen. I will have to go find what my name is again and email :)

herewegoloubylou · 24/01/2013 18:50

Can we start getting local listings on the right of our screen again? I miss them.

BIWI · 24/01/2013 20:02

Helen please could you change the font to Verdana, so that it matches the rest of Mumsnet? It feels like I'm in another place, rather than Mumsnet when I'm on the local boards.

(But whatever you do, do not ever, ever, ever in any way consider using Comic Sans)

slightlysoupstainedbabygrows · 24/01/2013 20:14

So do we still need to pick One Local Username that never changes? Haven't used Local yet as couldn't decide on a name...

poachedeggs · 24/01/2013 20:14

YES to what BIWI said!

Yes, that's definitely the plan loubylou. It might remind people that Local is there!

herewegoloubylou · 24/01/2013 21:14

Really useful to have that info. Smile I need to know what's going on!

zcos · 24/01/2013 21:55

There is no up there on ipad app ... Does anyone know how to view!

WipsGlitter · 24/01/2013 22:08

There's still not much on ours (Belfast). Parts of it look dreadful on an iPad. I'd take away the multiple "advertise your business here" banners, just reinforces there's nothing there!

Shattereddreams · 24/01/2013 22:15

I don't use Local because it annoys the hell out of me when I want to search on my iPhone or iPad. If you want any topic alphabetically beyond mumsnet local-wherever you have to flick past ruddy hundreds of the damn things.

Move them out the main search list. Or give them their own drop down. Grrrr

Maybe I might visit then.

Where is Mumsnet Local?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 24/01/2013 22:55

Dundee, apparently Ru.

Confused

If you use the desktop version on the iPad, it looks and works just dandy. Looking at Local through the iPad app does have to be fine-tuned though.

Where is Mumsnet Local?

Go to the desktop site, click on Local on the Nav bar and choose from the UK map. If you're on a mobile, you'll view the mobile site unless you click 'desktop site' at the bottom of the mobile pages.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 25/01/2013 00:06

Why's it take me to Dundee, EmmaMN?

Confused still.

zcos · 25/01/2013 00:56

Found it think its in topics right down bottom absolutely nothing on all the areas within 10 mile radius of me ... And one is a capital city!! For shame!

GreatGooglyMoogly · 25/01/2013 07:10

When you revamped Local, did it delete all of the existing listings (other than talk)?

At the moment, we're using cookies, so Dundee must have been the last site you looked at. From the Dundee site, just click on 'Find a local site' just under the nav bar on the left hand side. That will take you to the UK map and you can choose another site.

Can you tell me roughly where you are? You can pm me if you're worried about outing yourself.
GreatGooglyMoogly · 25/01/2013 10:32

Is there a Parties (Entertainers, Venues, etc) section?
