"Mad as a box of frogs" is racist?
I always thought the saying was about actual frogs. you know, ribbit ribbit. Packed in a box. Hopping mad. (sorry about that
)
And are the french a race? as in an ethnicity?
I mean, they're a nation, but they're not a race. So even if it was about french people, it still wouldn't be racism. It'd be xenophobia.
but I honestly struggle to believe that the saying refers to actual french people.
I suppose if you put a load of french people in a box they'd be fairly perturbed about it.
As perturbed as a container of french people.
Having seen the link, I still don't get it. Someone posts the 1944022944643390229th thread this month about how they don't like mumsnet. Someone says they're as mad as a box of frogs. And this isn't saying they're being a bit bonkers but is actually a calculated slur on their nationality. Which isn't mentioned on the thread. But apparently at some point in the past, they've mentioned their children are in the french education system. Which means that these people had read the OP and then searched the OPs other posts, noted this and made a decision to choose a euphemism for battyness that mentions an offensive word for the french.
Really?
Isn't it more likely that they just meant it how everyone else means it when they say it?
