Coo-eeh! Come tell us what you think of the New (hopefully much better) Mumsnet Local

Hello. We've been aware for a while now that MN Local isn't all it could be and we've been beavering away for several months now to make it much, much better.

And today's the Grand Unveiling of the all-new, all-singing, all-dancing (well, OK, not quite singing and dancing just yet) Mumsnet Local

We've reorganised the Local sites a bit (they were a bit random, geographically speaking, before). And, if you go to your nearest Mumsnet Local site, you'll see there's much more to it and it's much easier to find your way about. There are loads more categories for listings and space for reviews, and you'll find nearly new inside an expanded Classifieds section - which should make your Mumsnet Local an altogether more helpful place to hang out. Don't worry, we haven't lost the talk threads from old Local. They'll be reappearing in the new sites very soon.

Some Mumsnet Local sites are still a bit light on listings and info (we're working on that right now) but, if you'd like a look at what we're hoping all Mumsnet Locals will look like pretty darn soon, do have a butcher's at Bath. If you want to share something with other Mumsnetters on any of the sites, just click on Add a Listing (the pink button on the right just under the navigation bar).

Sites that are not far behind include Bedford, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Bolton & Bury, Manchester & Trafford, Bournemouth & Poole, Brighton & Hove, Bristol, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Exeter, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Portsmouth, Southampton, Surrey, and in London? Barnet, Lambeth, Hackney, Haringey, Hillingdon, Islington, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Waltham Forest boroughs.

And we're hoping all the other Local sites, including those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, will be hot on their tails. We're looking to entice people to look after these sites, but more on that soon.

We've designed an easy-to-use Meet Ups page. If you want to volunteer to organise a regular meet-up in your area, just email [email protected] . There are more bits and pieces and snazzy new features to come, too. Once --Tech's had a bit of a lie down

We do hope you like what you see. Do let us know what you think - as ever, all feedback is most welcome.

Here there is a centre in a bigger community partnership building that has a gp, dentist, physio clincs, that's why I said some have centres, not all. We call this part of the community partnership building the children's centre.

GlaikitFizZombie · 21/10/2012 23:42

There are also family centres in some areas.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 22/10/2012 08:06

Hello, sorry if this has already been mentioned, but would it possible to get a few more "See All" buttons? I'm looking at the Southampton site, at the "Things To Do" page and I'm having to open each section, classes, attractions, softplay etc, to see if there's anything listed. Same for Services, Classifieds, and On The Highstreet. Probably the others too, but I gave up after those. :(

addictedisback · 22/10/2012 09:59

I'm confused and this is probably going to make no sence, so please bear with me.

I'm just looking at somerset local's page (not my local, but moving there soon so having a nosey Blush) and under 'somerset latest' on the right hand side of the screen (under the local talk button) there are lots of 'whats on' things liek zumba classes, jo jingles for children in need etc. but when I go to the whats on section and click all, nothng comes up? so I clicked back on the right to the zumba class and it said it was in local>somerset>services>fitness and wellbeing>other but when I clicked through thoes buttons, there was nothing there? on any of the sections.

Viperidae · 22/10/2012 11:01

Woohoo! I can now see the site properly but everything is still "coming soon" and the search box doesn't work.

I did have my own tech support but the bugger abandoned me to go to university! This is my first world problem, you have a teenage son, think "Why have a dog and bark yourself?" wrt computers then they grow up and move on leaving you clueless!

kellestar · 22/10/2012 11:30

addictedisback there seems to be an overlap with Bath at the moment. I haven't done anything on the Somerset pages yet, been updating my list on Bath first [have a check there as some activities do overlap some parts of Somerset]. If you have any local questions you are welcome to PM me, until things are started :)

kellestar · 22/10/2012 11:32

When will expired listings go? I entered an event last week that happened over the weekend and it's still showing on the lists...

Liking the field options [text limits, what should be entered etc] as it's now much easier to know what size should be there. Though I think the notes section limit of 35 is quite short. I'm using most of my review space up with notes on the actual event etc.

kellestar · 22/10/2012 12:14

I've just added a few listings to Bath whats on, sales and they're not appearing.

I've also added listings for Somerset, Pregnacy and Post-natal, Antenatal Classes local.mumsnet.com/somerset/pregnancy-post-natal/show-all and they aren't appearing even on show all.

EmmaMumsnet · 22/10/2012 12:48

@InElectricDreams

Right, have just clicked on my area and got three local sites listed: Merseyside, Liverpool & Wirral and St Helens, Knowsley and Sefton. THIS MAKES NO SENSE. There will be massive overlap between Merseyside and Liverpool & Wirral, and probably with ST H K S, come to that. Why on earth have all three? Either go for a Merseyside area with broad coverage, or split into Liverpool on its own, Wirral, Sefton etc.

Plus the latter doesn't really make sense as it's specific local authority areas that often get linked together, but someone in St Helens might be geographically closer to an event/place in south Liverpool than they would to a Sefton one in, say, Southport.

I would be willing to add content (L&W is empty at the mo) but not while there are parallel sites running as with my luck, everyone else who comes along will use the one I don't, and I'm not loading it all in twice.

Having looked at other comments, I think people have very different expectations of what 'local' should be, having seen someone say they were looking at Brent but only wanted to know about specific bits of Brent(!) Personally I am happy with a broader approach and willing to travel across the Merseyside area. As it is, though, the areas in my neck of the woods don't make sense. MNHQ?

You're absolutely right Electric, Merseyside should not have appeared as a separate site ? that was an inputting error on our part. This has been fixed now. Once the My Local Sites function is up and running, you'll be able to switch easily between the two remaining sites.

Are you looking at local.mumsnet.com/somerset, addictedisback?

Doesn't sound like it, from your description...

That's odd, kellestar. We'll let EmmaMumsnet know.

ZombTEE · 22/10/2012 14:16

I'm running into trouble with the character limit on prices. An attraction I am entering needs more than the 35 character limit as their prices are things like 6.60. I kid you not!

I put a note to see the website, but more characters to list actual prices would be better. Also they have several family options that would be good to list on site as well as yearly membership and such.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2012 14:18

What ZombTEE said, I'm having to list a lot of opening times/prices as "see website"

Imflabulous · 22/10/2012 14:21

Im on internet explorer and when i log on i cannot search, all tabs say they will be available soon and nothing happens when i click on local and also it says London mapbut nothing else.

Is it not quite finnished? or does Northumberland have no local sight :(

ZombTEE · 22/10/2012 14:27

Sorry, next thing...hard to rate or review an event that is happening in the future, but you can't leave them blank!!

EmmaMumsnet · 22/10/2012 14:51

Tech says you may have previewed, but not posted. I'm pm-ing you with the links

OP posts:
kellestar · 22/10/2012 15:08

Blush yes, I previewed and didn't post.

It does say under 'somerset latest' two things I added for Bath [which is good that they cross over] but think it might confuse people like addicted if you click the side link it takes you to local.mumsnet.com/somerset/parks-playgrounds/2137-alice-park but if you go to local.mumsnet.com/somerset/parks-playgrounds nothing is there.

ZombTEE · 22/10/2012 15:12

I should do a few and write one post...sorry. Blush

Would be really handy if I didn't have to accept the T&Cs every time...

EmmaMumsnet · 22/10/2012 16:04

@DameMargotFountain

i know it's a bit late to say, but i think it's shame that SN support is hidden in the 'meet-ups' section

i only found it by accident, is it too late to have it moved to a more prominent part of the local boards?

Once the Talk Boards in Local are functioning, we will take a look at this.

OP posts:
DameMargotFountain · 22/10/2012 18:55

brilliant, thanks Emma

wigglesrock · 23/10/2012 21:18

Imflabulous same with me, I'm in NI.

WipsGlitter · 24/10/2012 07:26

Honestly, I think the layout is terrible. I don't want to be clicking and clicking to get what I'm looking for. I think you have too many options particularly as there isn't enough on yet.

exexpat · 24/10/2012 12:52

So when is the 'my local site' button going to go live?

I might be more inclined to go on local and contribute some content if a) local chat was working, and b) I didn't have the whole palaver of clicking through the map etc to find my local site every time.

ouryve · 24/10/2012 14:39

Just remembered this thread

Um, County Durham doesn't really have anything to look at. Pops up blank on the map. I can't even get a flasher in the search bar, let alone type in it.

Yes, Northern Ireland isn't working at all right at the moment. Sorry. We're on the case.

Now I'm going to give you a very stern look, Emmamumsnet I'm oop North, not in Northern Ireland [hangry][hgrin] You're mixing County Durham up with County Down.

ouryve · 24/10/2012 14:40

And sorry Emmamumsnet - that glare may have been meant for Helenmumsnet
