Hello. We've been aware for a while now that MN Local isn't all it could be and we've been beavering away for several months now to make it much, much better.

And today's the Grand Unveiling of the all-new, all-singing, all-dancing (well, OK, not quite singing and dancing just yet) Mumsnet Local

We've reorganised the Local sites a bit (they were a bit random, geographically speaking, before). And, if you go to your nearest Mumsnet Local site, you'll see there's much more to it and it's much easier to find your way about. There are loads more categories for listings and space for reviews, and you'll find nearly new inside an expanded Classifieds section - which should make your Mumsnet Local an altogether more helpful place to hang out. Don't worry, we haven't lost the talk threads from old Local. They'll be reappearing in the new sites very soon.

Some Mumsnet Local sites are still a bit light on listings and info (we're working on that right now) but, if you'd like a look at what we're hoping all Mumsnet Locals will look like pretty darn soon, do have a butcher's at Bath. If you want to share something with other Mumsnetters on any of the sites, just click on Add a Listing (the pink button on the right just under the navigation bar).

Sites that are not far behind include Bedford, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Bolton & Bury, Manchester & Trafford, Bournemouth & Poole, Brighton & Hove, Bristol, Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Exeter, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Portsmouth, Southampton, Surrey, and in London? Barnet, Lambeth, Hackney, Haringey, Hillingdon, Islington, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Waltham Forest boroughs.

And we're hoping all the other Local sites, including those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, will be hot on their tails. We're looking to entice people to look after these sites, but more on that soon.

We've designed an easy-to-use Meet Ups page. If you want to volunteer to organise a regular meet-up in your area, just email [email protected] . There are more bits and pieces and snazzy new features to come, too. Once --Tech's had a bit of a lie down

We do hope you like what you see. Do let us know what you think - as ever, all feedback is most welcome.

@TheJoyfulPuddlejumper

Um... The links don't work...

Ha! I'll fix.

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 12:20

While we're fixing , do click on the 'Local' link in our big blue Navigation Bar at the top.

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 12:27

First two links should be working now. Meet-ups one on its way

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 12:29

Go on, somebody tell us they're working, for gawd's sake

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2012 12:41

Yes, not all the areas have listings in yet, so it would be great if you added info for your local area, thanks Faverolles

@Faverolles

Yes, looks really good :)

When I click on links like children's centres, are they meant to be blank?

If they're waiting for info, I'm happy to find and email info for my area.

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 12:48

Are all of you who are getting that error on the mobile site?

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2012 12:49

Hello Screaming,
You'll find Cumbria at local.mumsnet.com/cumbria and Lancashire at local.mumsnet.com/lancashire

To find other sites you can go to local.mumsnet.com and use the UK map

@ScreamingManAndGoryOn

Hello!

Have had a wee look and have noticed that there isn't a local page for the whole of Cumbria and for North Lancs. Preston and Blackpool are the nearest to where I am on the Cumbria border, but close is relative IYSWIM.

If I collate information about what's going on in North Lancs / South Lakes and send it over could it be added as a local page?

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 12:55

OK, so there is a wee problem with the map not showing all the Local

We are fixing it.

In the meantime, you should be able to find your Local by going to local.mumsnet.com/YourCountyorTown...

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 12:57

@ZombTEE

I'm not getting past the map. I click on NI and a little box pops up that says, helpfully Hmm, Northern Ireland but I can't get past that.

Am I doing something wrong?

Also, are the Tsarinas going to get a manual or something? Grin

Are you a Tsarina, ZombTEE. Did you get EmmaMumsnet's recent mail?

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:00

@ZombTEE

Yes, I am, helen. I got the one months ago asking if I still wanted to be a Tsarina but nothing since then.

Months and months? Or a few weeks' ago? Was it from EmmaMumsnet?

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:01

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

Ok gone to localsite/glasgow

Icky green menu pops up.

If I click on any of the categories (eg softplay) they all say "classes in Richmond upon thames" and list the 4* venue hotel....

Ah! We'll take a look at that one

Thanks for pointing it out.

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:02

@TheJoyfulPuddlejumper

Confused I just tried the local.mumsnet.com/ method and got a "500 Servlet Exception" message.

Which town/county were you trying to get?

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:03

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

Hello, I am confused (and using mobile site)

If I type Glasgow I to the search box and search nothing happens.

If I click on Glasgow on the map it pops up a wee box. If I click on the box/the word Glasgow within the box nothing happens.

Am I totally thick?

Tech are fixing the map now. And then they'll get on to the Search box. Blush

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:06

@TheJoyfulPuddlejumper

Chichester or Brighton - I got the same message for both.

Ok, so Brighton is local.mumsnet.com/brighton-hove

For Chichester, try local.mumsnet.com/west-sussex

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:09

@SoupDragon

All I get is "new feature coming soon" if I click anything other than the map.

Try clicking the bluey/green tabs instead?

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:13

@TheJoyfulPuddlejumper

Those addresses both bring back this again:

This page contains the following errors:

error on line 53 at column 26: error parsing attribute name

Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.

Mumsnet Discussions var wl10374camp = ""; var wl10375camp = "";

Did you perhaps put www at the beginning?

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:14

@ItsAllGoingToBeFine

Are you looking at local.mumsnet.com/glasgow/soft-play ?

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:15

@mrscumberbatch

Apart from the fact that there is no local site available for Glasgow. It doesn't allow the clickthrough.

Try local.mumsnet.com/glasgow

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:19

@mrscumberbatch

The local.mumsnet.com/glasgow takes me to the mumsnet board with local glasgow. Not a local page, just the normal MN talk board, so there's no navigation to get around the local page ifyswim.

Really? Can't you see any nice pics or anything?

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:20

@ZombTEE

Sorry, it was from Emma though. I think...

Hi Tee, you're on my master list. I'll pm you later with more details?

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:24

@mrscumberbatch

Nothing, just the normal talk board layout if I google search it.

If i try and go there directly (ie typing in www.local.mumsnet.com/glasgow) it takes me to server not found.

Ah. It's the www that messed things up.

The new local doesn't need a www.

It's just local.mumsnet.com/whatever.

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:29

@undertheduvet

Do you want people to add listings on their local sites or are the old listings being moved across?

Yes, please do add listings!

The old ones should be being moved across, too - but the more, the merrier.

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:32

@mrscumberbatch

Ooh I don't like the local nickname thing. Confusing. I'd rather have the same nickname throughout.

Sorry about that. It's there to give people some protection from being 'busted' in RL.

So, if you've posted all over the main Talk boards about your horrible MIL and your revolting neighbours and how much you hate your child's school, no one can work out who you are and hunt you down when you post on Local.

You could be mrscumberbatchy on Local or summat, if you like, though? ie near enough to be almost the same?

EmmaMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:33

@Pascha

[GIN]?

Yes please

HelenMumsnet · 17/10/2012 13:36

@SlightlyJaded

It looks fab HQ

I am especially happy to see the shiny new Friendship Bench in meet ups, thank you so much.

Hurray! And thank you.
