What the jeff is going on?

Surely you've not resorted to putting great big advertisements in the middle of threads?

OP posts:

@TheOneWithTheHair

I hope the new app comes soon. I really prefer the mobile site but these ads are doing my head in. Can they be moved to either before the first or after the last post on a page perhaps? :(

We could try moving them to a different spot if there is a consensus, yes. The most common format I've seen is after the first post but we thought that would be worse. Let us know what you think would work best. Happy to experiment a bit.

DiscoDaisy · 24/05/2012 16:56

The ads completely ruin the threads. Make them stop!
They don't make me want to buy a product rather the opposite as they are so annoying.

AgentProvocateur · 24/05/2012 16:58

I just came on to start a thread about this. Sorry - I find them too intrusive, and would add my voice to those who want them elsewhere in the thread. Please please get rid.

McKayz · 24/05/2012 17:02

Why can't they be at the bottom under the box you write your message in?

I really think in the middle of a page between posts is a daft place for them to be.

We can't get rid of them for now because we've promised delivery of certain number of mpus and because loads more people are suddenly using the mobile version of the site (as opposed to the web version of the site on their mobile, which carried an mpu) we won't fulfil our obligations if we don't serve mpus on the mobile version of the site. So we can't get rid, I'm afraid, for now at least but can try it in other places - we'll try it at the bottom of the mobile page and see if that works better for folks.

MN needs ads. Understood.

But its pretty awful on my BlackBerry. Really slowing it down.

Can you rethink?

Tee2072 · 24/05/2012 17:08

Put them at the top before Log out etc. and make them half the height.

It shouldn't really make a lot of difference to speed but as said, we'll try it lower down the page - so if it is taking time to load then won't matter so much.

Tee2072 · 24/05/2012 17:09

Hey wait, there's already a banner ad at the top...

hairylemon · 24/05/2012 17:09

I think the bottom would be great, still fulfilling your obligations but not 'easy' to spot

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 17:10

@Tee2072

Can't make them half the height I'm afraid - they are pretty standard web format and what advertisers want (though I'm sure in time a more mobile friendly version - as you say half the height - will evolve)

hairylemon · 24/05/2012 17:11

its made a massive difference to my phone, it wont scroll until the ad has loaded for some reason Confused

CarpeJugulum · 24/05/2012 17:24

I'm on an iPhone and when I scroll up or down, the ad takes up almost the whole screen, and I then click it by default and disappear off to another site.

Okay, I can take on board that you need a certain amount of clicks etc, but at least think about the sizing? I really don't want to click on certain adverts - for example to get here, I had to visit Pierre villages which I am not interested in at all!

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 17:29

It is tiny on a BBerry, and makes no difference in the loading speed fwiw.

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 17:32

We've put it at the bottom of threads now - let us know your thoughts.

CarpeJugulum · 24/05/2012 17:34

Works better for me - I can then see it and jump it by using the reply button.

Still think the size is too big though. Confused

Sirzy · 24/05/2012 17:35

Would be better without but still better than it was!

OhNoMyFanjo · 24/05/2012 17:37

But there's a reason everyone is using the mobile site, no ads Grin

MrsHerculePoirot · 24/05/2012 17:41

Deffo better at bottom IMO..,

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 17:44

@OhNoMyFanjo

Good one Wink. No, it was a problem of our own making really - we put a default to mobile site on a few weeks ago if you enter MN from a mobile device because lots didn't know about the mobile site and the website on a mobile is not really a very optimal experience. About 40% of our traffic is mobile, so what that meant was suddenly we weren't able to deliver all the squarish ads we'd promised, as they weren't previously delivered on mobile... anyway hopefully the bottom of threads, where they are now, is a better solution...

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 17:48

That last post of mine was really not very intelligible, was it? Must be time for Wine.

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 17:49

It was rather a stream of consciousness...Grin

McKayz · 24/05/2012 17:50

Justine that looks much much better. Thank you.

DiscoDaisy · 24/05/2012 17:50

Much better down the bottom. I can ignore it down there!

usualsuspect · 24/05/2012 17:50

My BB still loaded ok , I was just a bit confused for a while when the ad loomed out at me
