What the jeff is going on?

Surely you've not resorted to putting great big advertisements in the middle of threads?

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 16:30

Hello,
Yes we have now got an rectangular-shaped ad (an mpu) appearing once after the first 5 posts of any thread on the mobile site. We have been pointing people by default to the mobile site (as opposed to the web version of the site) for a few weeks and have found as a result we are unable to fulfil our ad bookings for mpus, as everyone does (unsurprisingly) seem to want to stick on the mobile site when using their mobile phone. Previously we didn't have an mpu on the mobile site but it wasn't a problem because not many people were using it.
We do think the mobile version is a much better experience, but can't really fit an mpu anywhere but in the midst of a thread (if you have a better idea for where to put it, then please say). It is very quickly scrollable-over as has been noted, so hope those annoyed by it will get used to it soon. There's always the (free) app if you really can't stand it (new improved version for iphone, plus android and ipad coming very soon, I promise).

@hairylemon

Can you remove them from sensitive boards? I'm not sure someone recovering from a mc would want to order some maternity clothes or someone whose dp is cheating will fancy a nice family holiday

It's the same set up as we currently have for the site - ie we only show partner or in-house ads on sensitive boards but we'll take a look at what we're showing to make sure there's nothing crass. Thanks for raising it.

@TheOneWithTheHair

I hope the new app comes soon. I really prefer the mobile site but these ads are doing my head in. Can they be moved to either before the first or after the last post on a page perhaps? :(

We could try moving them to a different spot if there is a consensus, yes. The most common format I've seen is after the first post but we thought that would be worse. Let us know what you think would work best. Happy to experiment a bit.

@AgentProvocateur

I just came on to start a thread about this. Sorry - I find them too intrusive, and would add my voice to those who want them elsewhere in the thread. Please please get rid.

We can't get rid of them for now because we've promised delivery of certain number of mpus and because loads more people are suddenly using the mobile version of the site (as opposed to the web version of the site on their mobile, which carried an mpu) we won't fulfil our obligations if we don't serve mpus on the mobile version of the site. So we can't get rid, I'm afraid, for now at least but can try it in other places - we'll try it at the bottom of the mobile page and see if that works better for folks.

@RedRosie

MN needs ads. Understood.

But its pretty awful on my BlackBerry. Really slowing it down.

Can you rethink?

It shouldn't really make a lot of difference to speed but as said, we'll try it lower down the page - so if it is taking time to load then won't matter so much.

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 17:10

@Tee2072

Put them at the top before Log out etc. and make them half the height.

Can't make them half the height I'm afraid - they are pretty standard web format and what advertisers want (though I'm sure in time a more mobile friendly version - as you say half the height - will evolve)

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 17:32

We've put it at the bottom of threads now - let us know your thoughts.

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 17:44

@OhNoMyFanjo

But there's a reason everyone is using the mobile site, no ads Grin

Good one Wink. No, it was a problem of our own making really - we put a default to mobile site on a few weeks ago if you enter MN from a mobile device because lots didn't know about the mobile site and the website on a mobile is not really a very optimal experience. About 40% of our traffic is mobile, so what that meant was suddenly we weren't able to deliver all the squarish ads we'd promised, as they weren't previously delivered on mobile... anyway hopefully the bottom of threads, where they are now, is a better solution...

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 17:48

That last post of mine was really not very intelligible, was it? Must be time for Wine.

OliviaLMumsnet · 24/05/2012 22:13

Hi StateofConfusion - we will move the thread if you report it, if that would be more appropriate.
Thanks
