What the jeff is going on?

Surely you've not resorted to putting great big advertisements in the middle of threads?

OP posts:
hairylemon · 24/05/2012 15:31

Mind you I'd just get a blank box then wouldn't I?

StealthPolarBear · 24/05/2012 15:32

Yes, you think you've finished the thread when in fact its just the huge ad taking up the whole screen

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/05/2012 15:34

Get0rf: are you using the mobile site? If you are what browser are you using because I will switch

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 15:36

I am on google chrome on my laptop - no ads here (and have no ad blockers set up).

I have just looked on Blackberry and the ads are there. They are not that obtrusive though really - takes the thread no longer to load (mind you BBery takes ages to load threads anyway)

hairylemon · 24/05/2012 15:37

I've just had a thought. How crass would it be for an op to be reading replies on say a relationship thread about their family falling apart and a fucking massive ad pops up for mw holidays? Or worse on a pregnancy loss/miscarriage thread they get the jojo whatsit ad? I know they are on the top but to have them slap bang in the middle of a sensitive thread is a bit off imo

hairylemon · 24/05/2012 15:40

As if to prove my point there is a lovely looking very pg woman advertising mama la mode. Would be hugely shit if that is on a miscarriage thread.

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 15:41

I am more offended at the fact that there is a picture of Delia Smith up there ^^

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/05/2012 15:43

TBH MNHQ, I would rather pay and get an ad free version of the site. These new ads are way too intrusive.

Yes I've had this on my mobile - just today- huge bloody great ads in the middle of threads..! No good will come of it, mark my words...

ScrambledSmegs · 24/05/2012 15:53

Ahh - was wondering why I haven't had the ads popping up in the middle of threads. I use Google Chrome and the MN app.

coldcomfortHeart · 24/05/2012 15:57

Very good point hairylemon.

Totally disrupts the thread. Please get rid, mn

ugh

PrisonerOfWaugh · 24/05/2012 16:01

I'm already hot and tired and grumpy, now my day has just got 100% shitter Sad

hairylemon · 24/05/2012 16:07

Just been on a relationship thread and sodding siblu happy fecking French holidays poppedup. Just what you want to think about when your relationship is going down the shitter

Pascha · 24/05/2012 16:15

Oh you lot! I just went on the mobile site so I could be Outraged about these big shocking flashy adverts in the way of the thread and all I can see is a normal looking ad in between 2 posts which I scrolled past in 0.0000000000000001 of a second.

I was all ready to send an Outraged of Kent email as well.

Get0rfMoiLand · 24/05/2012 16:22

I agree with you pascha - I don't want to be unsupportive but I don'yt see the problem with the thread ads at all.

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 16:30

Hello,
Yes we have now got an rectangular-shaped ad (an mpu) appearing once after the first 5 posts of any thread on the mobile site. We have been pointing people by default to the mobile site (as opposed to the web version of the site) for a few weeks and have found as a result we are unable to fulfil our ad bookings for mpus, as everyone does (unsurprisingly) seem to want to stick on the mobile site when using their mobile phone. Previously we didn't have an mpu on the mobile site but it wasn't a problem because not many people were using it.
We do think the mobile version is a much better experience, but can't really fit an mpu anywhere but in the midst of a thread (if you have a better idea for where to put it, then please say). It is very quickly scrollable-over as has been noted, so hope those annoyed by it will get used to it soon. There's always the (free) app if you really can't stand it (new improved version for iphone, plus android and ipad coming very soon, I promise).

hairylemon · 24/05/2012 16:34

Can you remove them from sensitive boards? I'm not sure someone recovering from a mc would want to order some maternity clothes or someone whose dp is cheating will fancy a nice family holiday

TheOneWithTheHair · 24/05/2012 16:38

I hope the new app comes soon. I really prefer the mobile site but these ads are doing my head in. Can they be moved to either before the first or after the last post on a page perhaps? :(

JustineMumsnet · 24/05/2012 16:38

It's the same set up as we currently have for the site - ie we only show partner or in-house ads on sensitive boards but we'll take a look at what we're showing to make sure there's nothing crass. Thanks for raising it.

Empressteryx · 24/05/2012 16:38

Maybe not enough of us are clicking on ads and MN need the income to keep the site free? I can't justify paying right now and I know I'm not the only one.

Yes, they need to be sensitive about ad placement but surely that's doable. As for slowing down phones, I'm running Android 2.1(old) and mine's ok.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/05/2012 16:39

You could put the ads underneath the "message hints" :-)

If visibility is super important how about at the very top above the thread title under topics/site stuff.

It would be less annoying if not in middle

Empressteryx · 24/05/2012 16:40

Cross post sorry. Still think I've got a point though!
