mn hq, can we have an explanation - jess - and maybe re other trolls in future?

wannaBe · 20/02/2012 13:40

I am aware that you can't divulge the means by which you determine whether or not a poster is genuine, predominantly because if you make that common knowledge then posters will know how to avoid being detected in the future.

but jess (long ongoing eleven weeks abortion threads) threads have now been deleted for being a troll, and I was wondering if, given it's the site users who usually report these things, we could perhaps have a bit more by way of explanation?

e.g. when sassysusan was banned, mn hq confirmed that she had previously posted as washwithcare, and users were able to identify.

There has been some speculation that jess was dizzymare, and I wondered whether this was the case?

Also, these threads have been ongoing for over a month now. How is it that it takes quite this long to determine that someone isn't actually all they seem?

Pinot Brew cause it's Lent and I've given up except for one day a week which is not cheating because Jesus only lasted 40 days but Lent is 46 days so that's not fair so I can have one drink day a week and that's perfectly ok but not today because today is Ash Wednesday and I'm also fasting so I haven't had my lunch and I'm very hungry but I guess that's the point of fasting but at least I am allowed a brew at least I think I am allowed a brew I mean Jesus had brews didn't he or did he I don't know and oh bollocks I've lost it again

Pinot · 22/02/2012 14:33

fasting Shock
I shall eat cake on your behalf. You Are Welcome Grin

MooncupGoddess · 22/02/2012 14:34

I think closing (but not deleting) threads as suggested by Maryz is a good idea. On another forum I occasionally visit on the mods will post along the lines of:

'This thread is no longer proving helpful to the original poster and is therefore CLOSED.'

In cases like the SS one the OP pretty quickly received all the helpful feedback she was ever going to get, so really there was no point continuing the thread even if genuine. It also provides a way of closing threads when it's not certain whether the OP is a troll or not, without traumatising vulnerable people.

OhChristFenton · 22/02/2012 14:38

'This thread is no longer proving helpful to the original poster and is therefore CLOSED.' I like that

I've gone and given up cheese for lent. What was I thinking?

DSs have given up tidying their room evidently..Hmm

hathorinareddress · 22/02/2012 14:39

Mine would never give up tidying their rooms, OhChristFenton.

Because they never started in the first place Grin

Pinot · 22/02/2012 14:42

Closing a thread after a heap of repetitive MNers advice and a referral email from HQ wouldn't endanger a vulnerable poster, but it would starve trolls of attention.

Win/Win.

Right! Next? World Peace....?

TheRhubarb · 22/02/2012 14:48

I've given up World Peace for Lent.

Oh no sorry, that's Cameron's resolution, I do apologise Grin

Pinot, I wouldn't eat that cake, ds has had his fingers all over it and he never washes his hands after he's been to the toilet - not even after poos.

PrincessFiorimonde · 22/02/2012 14:51

Agree with Pag (and Maryz at 13:13:34).

Pinot · 22/02/2012 14:55

ewww dutty boy

Oi now, theres a thread in Relationships I've reported earlier and it shouts troll to me. Wannabe has posted a brilliant post just now, really superb. HQ is that the sort of thing that is OK, coz if it is I'm gonna keep a copy for my ref. I'll report this comment to get a reply from HQ.

PrincessFiorimonde · 22/02/2012 14:55

'This thread is no longer proving helpful to the original poster and is therefore CLOSED' reads to me as if the OP has got a bit arsey. But can see the argument for having something along these lines.

Maybe 'This thread is no longer proving helpful as it is going round in circles and is therefore CLOSED.'

TheRhubarb · 22/02/2012 15:04

This thread, like the circle tube line, is now closed. Please make your way to the buses at the front of the station which can take you to a variety of different thread sections. Will all AIBU customers please note that buns are being sold in the kiosk next to the Relationships bus stop.

PrincessFiorimonde · 22/02/2012 15:08

Grin Rhubarb.

Punchthosecalories · 22/02/2012 15:18

The Circle Line is closed ? When did that happen?

Punchthosecalories · 22/02/2012 15:19

:D

SinicalSanta · 22/02/2012 15:27

locking threads = more work for mnhq. more modding

TheRhubarb · 22/02/2012 15:39

Hey Helen btw, if you need more workers at MNHQ you know I'm free right? I'll accept initial contract of £12k pa which I think is very reasonable and yes I am willing to travel and lock my children in the cupboard under the stairs work full time very very hard. Tell Justine that ok? Don't forget!

Pinot · 22/02/2012 15:39

More work, dya think? More than fielding and replying to loads and loads of reports?

And in the long-run, if it does deter trolls, less work overall.

Pinot · 22/02/2012 15:41

I'll work from home, Helen, and you can pay me in Wine and Bobbi Brown cosmetics.

TheRhubarb · 22/02/2012 15:45

Yeah well I can do both remote working AND I can come into the office and my overall wage would be a darn sight less than Bobbi Brown cosmetics, whoever she is.

I think it's disgraceful how I haven't been offered work yet. I really should be doing some paid work by now. Ignore Pinot btw, she just eats cake all day. I'm the hard working one. Grin

HettyKett · 22/02/2012 15:46

So, what is the responsible MNer to do in the following situation:

I have had my suspicions about a particular poster for ages, 3 or 4 years in fact. She does nowt much wrong under the name I've seen all this time. Is totally open about who she is and what she does, unusually so, photos the works. She just loves, loves, loves attention, doesn't seem to make a secret of it.

But yeah, I've always had a bad feeling about her, really does seem the type to name change for drama. But hell, I've never reported her. Why would I? What for? But if I worked for MNHQ she'd sure as hell be on my Likely Candidate List and I'd have a sharp eye on any name changes.

So, what does one do? Name the name of a most likely entirely innocent MNer (privately, in an email to MNHQ) without any actual reason at all? Leave it and keep expecting her to be outed by someone else as Queen of all Trolly Trolldom?

Eh? Tell me, please!

Pagwaatch · 22/02/2012 15:49

Well if it's me you are talking about report me.

Anyone who is straightforward about who they are won't give a shit will they?

Pinot · 22/02/2012 15:49

Ignore that Rhubs, HQ, her son has poo fingers

Pinot · 22/02/2012 15:50

Hetty - easy, that one. Report.

HettyKett · 22/02/2012 15:51

Pag? You? The very idea Shock

Oh, fuck knows. I just have a bad feeling her. Mind you, I've not seen her about for a bit anyway.
