mn hq, can we have an explanation - jess - and maybe re other trolls in future?

I am aware that you can't divulge the means by which you determine whether or not a poster is genuine, predominantly because if you make that common knowledge then posters will know how to avoid being detected in the future.

but jess (long ongoing eleven weeks abortion threads) threads have now been deleted for being a troll, and I was wondering if, given it's the site users who usually report these things, we could perhaps have a bit more by way of explanation?

e.g. when sassysusan was banned, mn hq confirmed that she had previously posted as washwithcare, and users were able to identify.

There has been some speculation that jess was dizzymare, and I wondered whether this was the case?

Also, these threads have been ongoing for over a month now. How is it that it takes quite this long to determine that someone isn't actually all they seem?

We have no other grounds for deletion really, do we?

Well, you personally attacked yourself repeatedly at one point, if that would help...

Right, well I am a gullible fool. I believed Jess.
I think I owe wannaBe a huge apology too as I think I was quite snippy about her suggesting that Jess should join an antenatal thread.
Flowers for wannaBe.
My trolldar is non-existent. I even thought that when she mentioned "followers" that it was probably that she was more used to Twitter than MN.

Chimpmonkey - trolls work by making themselves believeable, by encouraging your natural instincts to be kind and helpful. Don't feel foolish. You're a decent person - unlike the unpleasant creeps who troll the boards. What kind of awful person seeks to prey on the kindness of people who have dealt with an unplanned pregnancy or the death of a child or a premature birth?

Ooh, I'm excited. Had my first ever 'message withdrawn at poster's request' on this thread. Teee hee. Little thrills, eh.

OhChristFenton · 21/02/2012 17:31

I saw that too MaryZ, clicked on it once, it's been up in Active Convos for much of the day every time I've looked.

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 21/02/2012 17:34

I reported it twice, then posted TROLL, then reported my posting TROLL and they deleted that (and other posts suggesting it) and left the thread!

Just a thought - but if someone thinks that another, maybe vulnerable mumsnetter is getting sucked in by a troll (maybe even to the extent of offering money/phone numbers/meetings etc), they could PM that person and warn them - that would seem to comply with the rules.

2ombie5layer · 21/02/2012 18:41

oh I never saw it (I have only gone in active a couple of times today)

Its a bit different reading a thread when you already know there's something not right with it. Didn't have the same effect as Jess did for me.
