What are families honestly spending on their weekly food shop?

cost of weekly food shop - Our food shop cost is crippling me. Our weekly food shop is £300 for 2 adults , 14 year old and a cat. My husband thinks that’s normal and is just the cost of living when I know my friends are paying half that. His response is well they are not being honest and they are actually paying more.

I can’t continue paying £300 a week, it’s insane I know . I’ve tried talking to him that it’s too much and he’s blaming me stressing over it on “ time of the month” as usual.

My question is , honestly what are families spending on their food shop weekly.

£120/w for 4 adults. Dinners are homecooked. Lunches very light or eaten outside (so not counted).

OP, I am guessing there is a lot of booze or readymeals in your £300/w.

£300 is way above average. We spend approx £80 a week for 2 adults. I expect we could pay £300 if we were buying a lot of alcohol, shopping at waitrose and buying expensive cuts of meat for every meal and branded products. I don't want to spend £300 so we often go for mid budget options and shop at a cheaper supermarket. We still buy as much fresh local produce as possible though and do not buy alcohol often.

Our shop has crept up and up too, £260 a week 2 adult two kids two cats. It’s becoming unaffordable, we don’t eat out at all so that’s all three meals a day for all of us!

Around £150 a week including laundry/cleaning stuff and nappies. Family of 4, kids aged 1 and 5. We shop at a mixture of Tesco, Lidl and Co-Op.

I'm being 100% genuine, PLEASE let me see a receipt of your food shop I'm so curious. for 2 adults we spend £80-£100 a week then £40 a month on dog food.

I expect we spend similar. 2 adults and 2/3 teens depending. Essentially all adults. We buy wine quite a lot too.

Ours is between £175-£275 really. 2 adults, teen, 1 child and a toddler. Plus snacks and some meals for other children as I’m a childminder. And a cat.
that also includes a fair amount of wine 😂 our budget used to be around £100 a week a few years ago. These days we are lucky to get under £200 a week.

Just little old me on my own, no other people and no pets and my food spend and household stuff ( laundry things, loo roll, kitchen roll, cleaning stuff) averages out at about £50 a week. I meal plan and batch cook and have the occasional bottle of wine, some treats and eat mainly veggie and fish main meals.

We do a big shop which is generally about £150 and doesn’t include any wine etc (bought separately). We always end up doing at least another two top up shops, probably totals about £200 a week. Two adults and two small children (with fairly large appetites, certainly for snacks). Ours is higher than it might be because we buy some gluten free stuff, which is small and expensive. Also includes pull ups, wipes etc.

We are honestly spending around what you are but we are a family of 5 with 2 cats. I find it really hard to spend less although I am buying more convenience food this year (burnout) so if I was really careful I could probably cut it down. Our budget does in fairness include plenty of healthyish (and not so healthy 🙄) treats and fresh fruit.

I would be curious to know roughly what you are buying to spend that much as I thought I was pretty extravagant 😅

Mainly homecook, shop at Aldi apart from some Gluten free stuff from Tesco.

I but for 2 adults and two older teens . Easy 800 -£900 a month and that’s 4 proper breakfasts, lunch and dinners. All home cooked and most usually from fresh. We could do cheaper but don’t.
we do buy some alcohol and have two cats.

£140ish a week , that covers 3-4 adults (inc two young adult males). 2/3 meat eaters and 1 veggie.

On top of that we spend -

£10 per week milk delivery
£20-30 per month cleaning/toiletry delivery Amazon
£75 per month dog food

We are a family of 6. Kids are 6, 5, 2 and 6 months so 2 in nappies.
We could easily spend £200 a week, i make most meals from scratch, my own bread, we have alot of fruit and veg, but it all adds up. I also buy meat from butchers so that adds abit more. But it is incredibly pricy. My husband likes to buy allot of cereal and snacks for the kids which i dont get in the food shop so not sure how much he spends there.

Blimey! I spend around £50 a week, myself, adult daughter and an always hungry labrador! My daugther tends to buy her own food and cook for herself though, and probably spends about £40/45 a week. So just under £100 a week. I budget and shop around. Supermarkets, local market, grocers, home bargains and there's a heron shop not too far away which has some good buys although stuff can be short dated.

Costs definitely continue to be high but I agree with you that £300 is excessive for the size of your family.
We are also a family of three, although granted no pets. We typically spend £80-£100. That’s us trying to be quite frugal. If we got everything we all really wanted - such as a lot more fruit, meat and a few more luxuries (all of which we’ve cut back on) it would be closer to £150, but still half what your OH thinks is reasonable to spend.

That does sound high. We don’t scrimp at all and buy (I think) high cost foods (lots of meat, branded things which we fancy, treat foods that cost a lot like good chocolate etc) and we spend £180-£220 a week for 2 adults and 3 teens. That’s all meals all from scratch, plus all household type things… I’d have to shop in Waitrose (vastly overpriced!) and buy lots of wine to reach a consistent £300. I’d expect you can get down to £200 ish without really feeling it…

I cook 5 days for 3 adults with snack at night for the two days we eat out. No toiletries and it's about 70 to 80 pounds

Doesn’t seem terrible to me. We typically spend around £1200 per month for me, DH and DS(7), though £150 of that is dog food. Shop weekly at Ocado. No alcohol, mostly organic where available.

2 adults and a cat. Probably round £90 - £105 weekly. We shop for 3 meals each a day and snacks. Eat out once a week. We eat fresh food.

we do have a cheap shop every 6 weeks as I bulk freeze. Although we are rubbish at labelling. So it’s freezer jackpot

I buy £250 Morrisons gift cards through Blue Light (3.5% off) and that seems to always last the husband and I one month which includes packed lunches for work. Then we buy a bag of dog food for our Labrador from Pets at Home for around £50 which also lasts a month (depends on the specific vouchers available how much it costs exactly but is roughly around that price). So £300 a month all in for two adults and a dog.
