What are families honestly spending on their weekly food shop?

cost of weekly food shop - Our food shop cost is crippling me. Our weekly food shop is £300 for 2 adults , 14 year old and a cat. My husband thinks that’s normal and is just the cost of living when I know my friends are paying half that. His response is well they are not being honest and they are actually paying more.

I can’t continue paying £300 a week, it’s insane I know . I’ve tried talking to him that it’s too much and he’s blaming me stressing over it on “ time of the month” as usual.

My question is , honestly what are families spending on their food shop weekly.

£80-£90 a week (2 adults, 2 young children). And this includes nappies, wipes, toilet paper etc. I used to spend £130 a week but since moving to online delivery, we have managed to save so much as I find that we were just going to the stores without a list and tend to grab stuff (esp. snacks, crisps) that we saw on the shelves without thinking. Since ordering online, I’m able to think and only order the stuff I need and able to check my pantry and plan out meals when ordering which makes for much less food wastage, overall ordering healthier food (cut down massively on snacks) and much cheaper weekly shops.

@Catty21 Three adults, includes toiletries and cleaning stuff, a dozen beers and an occasional bottle of gin (cat food separate), about £200pw and I don't stint or have to watch the pennies. What on earth are you spending it on?

Yea that’s mental. We pay around £120-150 per week. Two adult, two pre schoolers (who are at nursery but eat dinner every night). We shop at Aldi as it’s cheaper but also great quality.

£150 for two adults and two teens.
We are vegetarian so no meat or fish.

About £240 to £260 a week for 2 adulrs, 1 teenager and 2 primary age kids plus 3 cats. I shop between lidl, tesco, alldi and farmfoods. I find lidl and farmfoods are the cheapest and buying food in season

I’m spending way too much too as well. Probably about 850/ 900 for a family of 4.

70-100 a week for 4 adults, 1 cat. I literally can't imagine spending that much a week. And we eat well.

That's all breakfasts, lunches and tea for whomever is in, generally everyone about 75% of the time. The rest of the time is either eating at work (hospitality) or eating out. 2 other adult kids join us at least once a month.

Does not include alcohol.

I did see someone moaning their food bill on Instagram yesterday. They had a ready cooked chicken, crosta pizzas, ready made jacket potatoes, salmon etc. Just seemed really bizarre to moan about the food bill if you buy premium and ready made.

Yes, you should absolutely be able to have that. Who does the shopping, meal planning etc? If the problem is caused by DH and DC demanding a lot of processed things, snacks, soft drinks instead of water, different meals for everyone etc, time to stop buying them. If they complain, tell them they can do the shopping and get what they want, but they'll be doing all the planning and shopping as well. They'll adjust.

That’s a crazy cost. You could at least half that. Set yourself £200 a week for a while, and then reduce again.

We spend about £130-£150 per week as a family of 4 with 2 teens and a dog.

Around £150-£180 a week for two adults and two cats. That includes alcohol, energy drinks, fizzy drinks, cat food and cat litter. I usually shop at Morrisons or Sainsburys.

We budget £150 per week for two adults, a toddler and a (weaning) baby. We could definitely reduce that if needed as we order online from Ocado, buy organic where possible and try to avoid very processed foods. My husband likes to eat meat for every evening meal and doesn’t like any spiced or aromatic dishes whereas I don’t eat meat and happily have things like chickpea curry or daal which are cheaper. We don’t really drink alcohol or host friends/ family for food at the moment which would increase our spending. We used to eat out more but have found that with the rising cost of everything many restaurants have both increased prices and reduced the quality of what they’re serving so we are happy to spend a bit more on having nice food at home and then only eat out occasionally.

I wonder if the people claiming to spend less are remembering to add on all the extra shopping trips mid week when you run out of milk and end up spending £30… I would say we’re similar to you but our weekly shop is say £150 ish but it’s all the extras bits through the week and the odd weekend take away that mounts up.

It is easy to spend more, but a lot of people just don't have a spare £30 a week, so i can believe them when they say they're spending a certain amount.

Tonight we have had pork chops (nicr ones), Greek salad and new potatoes
Tues: Chicken curry (scratch)
Weds: pizza (dd and dh) and salad
Thurs: chicken caesar with good bread
Fri: salmon fillets, asparagus, new pots
Sat: beetroot, goats cheese, walnut and rocket salad and quiche (home made), green salad
Sun: roast chicken with lemon and herbs, crispy potatoes, salad

Plenty of fruit, fage, eggs, cream, cheese, bread, milk, nice ices, beers, tonic, bog roll, persil, salad stuff, bacon, olives, ham, bleach, tissues, bubble bath, toothpaste, water, Mexican Lime Soda.

I think most people will have remembered and included top ups. £300 seems very much on the high side to me.

I’d say we average £200 a week. Main Ocado shop, co op top up and an Aldi haul every couple of weeks. 2 adults, 2 primary aged kids and 2 cats. Non drinkers.

i buy what we want and it is a big pleasure to be able to do so as I grew up often hungry. I love being able to ask the kids what do you want in the shop this week. I’m not sure I could get it up to £300 though!

Wow. We are a house with 2 adults, mil eats here 3 times a week, a 4 year old and a teen for 2-3 nights a week. We spend around £150 or less every 10 days. I’ve stopped shopping weekly as I think we can make each shop last around ten days. It includes the wet food four our cat but not his specialist kibbles which are around £40 every three months. It doesn’t include the children’s school lunches but it does include DH and I lunches.

I shop online at Tesco. We have cut down on what we buy and bought some less ‘nice’ things than previous years etc. I put everything in my shopping basket online, I meal plan and I juggle it around to fit the budget.

I do my shopping online with Tesco and it ranges from £50-£110. If its £110 that includes 6 x 4l of milk so those weeks there's no top up except a fresh chicken for Sunday
