Has anyone ever challenged to speed of light Lidl checkout staff?

They go so quick!
Sometimes they almost push my shopping off the checkout because I can't bag it quick enough.
So sometimes I do get my own back by leaving as soon as my phone's made the payment but before their checkout registers it, just to balance the karma.

You're supposed to put it back in the trolley and pack on the bench behind the tills. Or have your bags open and fire it in willy nilly and then sort at the bench

cramptramp · 20/09/2025 18:36

You’re doing it wrong. Don’t pack your bags at the till.

FionnulaTheCooler · 20/09/2025 18:37

I don't understand how leaving once you've paid is "getting your own back?"

WhamBamThankU · 20/09/2025 18:38

You’re so wrong on this. You’re 100% meant to throw everything in your trolley and pack at the benches after the tills. Other customers and the checkout operators will be rolling their eyes at you.

ThirdStorm · 20/09/2025 18:39

Yes! As long as I’m ready waiting when they start I can generally keep up. But today he started before I’d put it all on the conveyor. I asked him to stop. I think I may have said it a little sternly, but he did!

DavidRosesEyebrows · 20/09/2025 18:39

Yeah this is you, sorry. Pack quicker or shove it back in the trolley and pack on the benches. And they won't care you get out the way quicker. Now if you hung around for ages checking your receipt and organizing your handbag, that would probably bug them.

imbolic · 20/09/2025 18:40

We were chatting to a girl on the checkout at Lidl a couple of days ago. She said they are supposed to put at least 27 items a minute through the till. It records their time.

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/09/2025 18:40

Nobody ever packs at the back bench in the Lidl I go in, in fact they pack in slow motion at the till.

BusySpinningPlates · 20/09/2025 18:43

@imbolic Yes, someone on checkout in Lidl once told me it is a requirement from managers (having to scan items fast), that they have to do it. Not sure if there are consequences if they are not so fast, or incentives if they are fast..?

BreezyPeachGoose · 20/09/2025 18:48

I use two different Lidl stores and never seen anyone packing at the benches, everyone bags at the checkout.

I've worked out that if you put all your fruit and veg on the conveyor belt roughly half way through your trolley load, it slows them down, as they have to weigh some of the items. This gives you time to catch up with putting the stuff in your trolley.
FWIW I never pack at the till. I leave my bags in the car and pack in the car boot.

EveryDayisFriday · 20/09/2025 19:07

I'm the opposite. I'm such a long-term Lidl shopper that when I do rarely go to Morrisons or Tescos it feel like they are taking the piss with how slow they are.

My trick: massive Ikea blue bags and shopping flung in quickly.

CalzoneOnLegs · 20/09/2025 19:08

@ohtowinthelottery tip of the year 🏆

CherryBlossom321 · 20/09/2025 19:09

They’re trained for speed. Why would anyone challenge someone doing their job correctly?

ThisHangryTiger · 20/09/2025 19:11

Also alcohol in the middle slows then down as they need to click the button on the till. I always lay the stuff on the conveyor in the order of packing, and never put stuff on top of each other on the conveyor to aid for smoother packing.

chattyness · 20/09/2025 19:13

I don't go to Lidl very often now but I pack at the checkout, I don't want to handle it all again and I'm pretty fast anyway

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 20/09/2025 19:18

Lay stuff on belt by category (frozen, ambient etc)

Have trolley bags / ikea bags or similar laid out in your trolley (I’ll look for a pic, they are excellent)

Items straight into correct bag

Pay

All supermarkets target your scan rate I used to really good at it in Asda. I’d slow down if I was scanning old dears etc but otherwise it was game on.

DH used to take MIL to Aldi (she hated it but all her friends shopped there so she pretended to love it). Once she forgot to pick up cream and knowing how doddery she is he went back to grab it, he came back to the ti and she was standing staring into space, the shopping was plied up like jenga and the till person looked quite concerned. She is the type who seems surprised she has to get her card out and pay for her shopping every time! ‘Oh my card…right…hang on…’ as she searches in her massive handbag.

EternalSunshine19 · 20/09/2025 19:37

The benches at my lidl have machines to scan your receipt and input your car registration so you don't get a parking fine. There's no room for people to pack their shopping there

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/09/2025 19:39

I pack at the till. I put two big bags in my trolley; a cool bag and a 'regular" bag. I stack the conveyor in good order to just dump things into the bags. Works for me!

whataweekImhaving · 20/09/2025 19:40

BreezyPeachGoose · 20/09/2025 18:48

You can only bag at the check out if you are willing and able to fire it into the bags very quickly.

If they are too fast for you and you can’t do this, you need to just sweep it into trolley then pack at the bench.

RaraRachael · 20/09/2025 19:54

Everybody at ouf Lidl packs their stuff at the tills. Didn't realise you weren't meant to.

Last week the checkout woman fired the dividers down the side with such force that they took the heads off 2 of my flowers!

ItWasTheBabycham · 20/09/2025 20:49

I try and group things together that I want to pack together (chilled, frozen etc). I pack at my own speed. If you ask them to slow down they usually do. If they don’t, hold your nerve, slow RIGHT down. If that happens, I will wait until I’ve packed everything to pay.

Tollington · 20/09/2025 21:09

I go to three different Lidl’s. I have not seen anybody pack at the bench since Covid.

If the cashier is going too fast just go even slower and they will have to stop because all of your items will have built up and forced them to do so
