Has anyone ever challenged to speed of light Lidl checkout staff?

They go so quick!
Sometimes they almost push my shopping off the checkout because I can't bag it quick enough.
So sometimes I do get my own back by leaving as soon as my phone's made the payment but before their checkout registers it, just to balance the karma.

I use two different Lidl stores and never seen anyone packing at the benches, everyone bags at the checkout.

everyone else is clearly faster than you then

If it's so important to you to have every vegetable in alphabetical order or apples facing a south easterly direction or whatever faffers like you are so anal about rather than just chucking your shopping into bags like normal people, then order it in the right way when you load up the conveyor belt.

Or just go to the packing bench as you're supposed to.

Don't do a sad pathetic 'revenge' (that the cashier probably won't even notice) for someone doing their job correctly.

This is not how Lidl works

You're supposed to put it back in the trolley and pack on the bench behind the tills. Or have your bags open and fire it in willy nilly and then sort at the bench

No you're not. You can do that if you choose but a member of Lidl staff told me recently that they are trained to wait for you to pack your bags - although the do scan quickly there is no obligation to pack at the counter and if it piles up they are supposed to stop and wait. All the staff in my local Lidl do this, though I'm pretty quick at packing.

It really is

Needmorelego · 20/09/2025 21:26

They don't really do that speed thing at the ones I go too.
Probably because most people use the pull along baskets rather than trolleys and your meant to leave those in a pile at the front of the till.
You have to pack at the till.

You’re so wrong on this. You’re 100% meant to throw everything in your trolley and pack at the benches after the tills. Other customers and the checkout operators will be rolling their eyes at you.

This is 100% wrong. Lidl has changed the way they do customer service over the years and they are no longer the bargain basement zero customer experience shop they used to be. You're absolutely fine to pack at the till and they are trained to wait for you to do so.

You can only bag at the check out if you are willing and able to fire it into the bags very quickly.

If they are too fast for you and you can’t do this, you need to just sweep it into trolley then pack at the bench.

No you really don't. You can pack at the till at a normal speed. They will keep scanning and piling your shopping but if they run out of space because you're packing slowly they will stop scanning.

We always do, don’t want to feel rushed. That’s what the back benches are for. The checkout staff are much better than they used to be, they go at normal pace, like any other supermarket, whereas a few years ago they went so fast, items fell off the convey belt.

caringcarer · 20/09/2025 21:36

Everyone at my closest Lidl uses the benches to pack bags. Sometimes you have to wait for a space.

banivani · 20/09/2025 21:36

When Lidl opened in Sweden they tried to introduce these efficient German tills. They had to cave. They now have normal Swedish tills where we stand calmly looking the cashier in the left earlobe and waiting to pay before sauntering over and packing our bags. To this day I remain impressed that the Swedish psyche defeated Lidl on this issue. Grin

The staff at our one do wait but it’s a good idea to put a few bakery items well wrapped up at strategic points along the shop to slow them down a bit.

MayaPinion · 20/09/2025 21:43

I love the challenge! Put items in categories to pack easily, fluff out all the bags and put them in a row, and then GO! Much better than Asda where they seem to employ checkout staff just for the chat. It takes forever to get through them.

u3ername · 20/09/2025 21:44

Have a feeling those complaining they go too fast are the same people that moan when there’s a queue of three people, requesting more checkouts be open.

movintothecountry · 20/09/2025 21:46

At my lidl most people use the large wheelie baskets not trolleys and youre not allowed to shove all your stuff back in the baskets. They take them off you at the till once all your stuff is on the belt as youre not allowed them out of the store, they won't even let you use them to go to the bench so you have to pack at the till.

Its a nightmare, I go as fast as I can but a few times they've nearly shoved half my stuff off the end onto the floor. Although if they do break something it doesn't really matter as you haven't paid at that point, so could just ask nicely for them to get you another unbroken one.

user1471538275 · 20/09/2025 21:47

I've always seen it as a personal challenge/ competition.

Bags are ready in the trolley, get trolley in right position, then go.

I usually win.

Corgi2023 · 20/09/2025 21:52

I throw back in the trolley and pack at the benches. Actually Lidl and Aldi are too slow for me. I've been doing this for 30 years and have got a pretty good technique now. What is annoying is when they don't push it down and you have to reach almost to their till to retrieve it.

Ollybob · 20/09/2025 22:01

I'm a fast packer, almost always have a basket so put things on the belt in order of heavy to light(roughly)
Soon as they start I'm lobbing things in my bags as quick as they scan them!

SarahAndQuack · 20/09/2025 22:02

I love Lidl. I am secretly disappointed that one of my local ones has staff who have obviously been allowed to dispense with the frantic pace. One of my happiest moments (yes, I live a sad life) was seeing a Lidl worker sweep the last few items of someone's shop into their trolley, because they'd been too slow to pack them.

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 20/09/2025 22:07

I'm a regular in my Lidl and all the staff are lovely- they will slow down if you ask them but im pretty speedy at packing (ie chucking everything into open bags in trolley!)

spoonbillstretford · 20/09/2025 22:10

When I shopped in Aldi I had trolley bags and packed them at the till. When you have a whole large trolley full there's no quicker way of doing it. I was pretty quick though.

Oh this is genius!!!

Im not bloody putting everything into my trolley then out again just to pack again
My back is agony as it is, it's not good for people with back and joint problems

I just put it in bags at the till

Portakalkedi · 20/09/2025 22:23

I enjoy the challenge of packing at the checkout but I realise it's not for everyone. I put stuff on the belt in order of packing, have the bags open and ready, app ready on my phone, etc. I once asked a cashier, after waiting ages behind a very slow packer, why they didn't remind shoppers to pack at the bench and she said they're not allowed to. They should have more signs about it though as they do still have the packing benches. Anyway it will no doubt soon be all self-checkouts so people can pack at their own pace.

If you're absolutely meant to pack at the benches why aren't there signs saying No packing at the tills?

None of our checkout operators are particularly fast anyway. I always use a wheelie basket and just put my stuff in any old way. I'll be home in 5 minutes so don't care how it's packed

landlordhell · 20/09/2025 22:25

I pack at the till and it’s never too fast.I have trolley bags x 5 so it’s pretty easy.
