Has anyone ever challenged to speed of light Lidl checkout staff?

They go so quick!
Sometimes they almost push my shopping off the checkout because I can't bag it quick enough.
So sometimes I do get my own back by leaving as soon as my phone's made the payment but before their checkout registers it, just to balance the karma.

I use two different Lidl stores and never seen anyone packing at the benches, everyone bags at the checkout.

I don't even shop at Lidl or Aldi, and even I know you're meant to fire it all in the trolley and pack it at the bench behind the tills.

They get timed on how quickly they scan, so if you can't pack at lightening speed, then pack at the bench or at your car.

I'm the opposite. I'm such a long-term Lidl shopper that when I do rarely go to Morrisons or Tescos it feel like they are taking the piss with how slow they are.

My trick: massive Ikea blue bags and shopping flung in quickly.

This. Morrisons staff are all soooo slow! I can’t bear it after shopping at Aldi and Lidl for years.

I can beat the staff though generally they like a natter in our branch and don’t rush you despite the queues they start another conversation!

Aldi and Lidl have been in the UK for decades now, how is this a surprise to anyone?

If there style doesn't work for you there are other places to shop. The faster the better for me as I want to be in and out quickly, Ive never found a cashier that's too fast

I love my local Lidl . I completely switched from Tesco and one of the reasons is the quick check outs. They fly through the queues and get people checked out really fast but the staff are absolutely lovely so really quick but never rude. I can get a weekly shop done and through the till in really quick time. Tesco near me is an absolute disaster

That’s why it’s cheap. If you want more staff and leisurely packing, try Morrisons. They have a sign on their tills saying “pack at your own pace”. Appeals to pensioners.

Myfridgeiscool · 20/09/2025 22:46

I love the speed challenge. Waitrose tills are like glaciers in comparison. I want to shop, pay and be on my way!

You’re meant to put your shopping on the conveyor belt in a sensible order to begin with, then have 3-4 big shopping bags in your trolley already open and put stuff straight in the bags as they get scanned. If you can’t keep up sort out at the shelves after paying.
The staff have targets they need to meet, it’s not their fault.
To be fair I find Lidl is better than Aldi at least at my local ones, the Lidl staff are a bit friendlier and so slow down if it starts piling up

@ohtowinthelottery tip of the year 🏆

A couple of bakery items also slows them down a bit.

no one packs at the benches in my branch.

We order on line maybe but this really stresses me out when I go to somewhere like Lidl. I have an invisible disability and even moving stuff slowly makes me get unwell (the more I move the muscles the weaker I get). Are staff understanding if you explain you can't do thinks quickly?

CoastalCalm · 21/09/2025 00:22

We had one of their big wheely baskets full today as didn’t have a pound - got ourself primed and packed four big bags straight off the belt without a single hold up , felt like winning a gold in the grocery olympics

DiscoNights · 21/09/2025 00:24

Last time I was in Lidl I almost said ‘Alright, calm down,’ but pride got the better of me

Yeah but you aren't though
maybe 20 years ago when it was a dirt cheap shop piled high with boxes of cut price food but that's no longer the identity of the shop and their customer service approach is very different. They are still no frills but it's absolutely not the expectation that you pack your shopping at the bench.

Of course! They aren't arseholes and you are the customer after all - they can't force you to pack your shopping in any way at all.

Staff at Lidl and Aldi and Waitrose are the nicest supermarket staff of all.

RaraRachael · 21/09/2025 13:43

Our Lidl has a very high staff turnover rate. There's one woman who's been there a couple of years and apart from her, I never seem to see the same people twice.
