In Britain is it normal for men to be circumcised or not?

I’ve just watched an episode of Good Trouble where one of the characters is very surprised that her boyfriend is uncircumcised. She talks about it with her friends and they all clearly regard it as very unusual. It reminded me that there is an episode of Sex and the City where one of the characters is also very surprised to find that a man is uncircumcised.

This makes me wonder: what’s the situation with this in Britain? I’ve always assumed that the vast majority of British men are uncircumcised, but I’ve not been with many men so don’t know whether this is the case. Just curious!

I've never seen a circumcised male or know of any. Maybe depends where you live/different cultures

xpc316e · 02/11/2020 14:30

peridito some say that because the glans of a circumcised penis is permanently exposed to rubbing of clothes, etc., it in some way becomes desensitised.

It kind of makes sense in a non-scientific way, but when you delve into the science of how nerve endings function the theory falls apart. For example, people with long hair become very accustomed to the sensation of their hair touching their neck, but when a partner kisses the nape of their neck do they still get aroused by it? Yes, they do. Nipples are the same: they can be subject to all kinds of stimulation by clothing, but they still tend to work well as erogenous zones.

So, my guess as an uncut male would be that a tongue around a glans of a cut cock would arouse the same reaction as it does with me.

@peridito

I thought that circumcision reduced sensation for men .Is that correct ?
Yes it does reduce sexual sensitivity/function and this article explains it quite well.

A more accurate comparison would be leaving the nipple but removing the areola. Who needs glands when Vaseline will do?

I have never seen a circumcised penis. I think it's considered a bit odd here. I would think it strange if a friend said that they were going to have their son circumcised.

Anotherblokelurking · 02/11/2020 22:25

@j712adrian

Bloke here..... played football with blokes and got changed with them for 35 years.

I would say I’d seen no more than a handful, but that would probably be wishful thinking on my part.

Getting a handful in the changing rooms sounds fun! Grin
Anotherblokelurking · 02/11/2020 22:27

Uncut here, and know only one guy who had his removed in his 40s after a medical issue.

Ihg27 · 03/11/2020 06:41

UK male , secondary school 80/90 with large open changing rooms and showers then years of football and a wide circle of friends.

I am only aware of one kid at school. That’s it, never seen or heard of another. Having said that (and there are no negative connotations here at all) my school was entirely white brits. There was a kid from Scotland and that was as multi cultural as we got back then. Likewise the football teams I played for.

I would say that amongst white brits it is very rare. For the country as a whole now we are (thankfully) more culturally diverse it’s likely more prevalent but still very much the minority

Moonmelodies · 03/11/2020 09:08

It must be like having your clit hood trimmed back and everything rubbing on your exposed clit all day.

Arnoldthecat · 03/11/2020 11:30

or your ear lobes cut off..

XiCi · 03/11/2020 11:33

Same

saleorbouy · 03/11/2020 13:23

Personally to me it is a male form of genital mutilation that serves no purpose for most recipients except in a small number of medical cases. The feeble excuse of "oh its cleaner" it tantamount to cutting off your lips to make it easier to clean your teeth.
The foreskin has hundreds of nerves that make stimulation pleasurable both for solo and sexual enjoyment with a partner.
It's sad that so many males around the world are denied this pleasure either for religious beliefs or visually aesthetic reasons.
Thankfully most males in the UK. are able to remain intact!

firewalkeruk · 03/11/2020 15:20

As a man of 55 yrs I would say that it is extremely rare to see circumcised males in changing rooms over my lifetime.
I guess here in the UK we prefer our Anouraks with hoods on.

Otterhound · 03/11/2020 16:41

It depends. Over Years of sport, very uncommon but it you have Jewish or Muslim friends then you are likely to see more.

I wouldn’t let it be done to my children unless for medical reasons.

And oddly enough I’ve never ever had a conversation on a boys night out about the type of vulva they prefer.....

No blokes discuss whether they like women shaved or au naturelle instead

zarek · 03/11/2020 20:42

Thank heavens, not

Crystal87 · 03/11/2020 21:13

No it's not common. The only circumcised boy I've ever known of was a friend's baby son who is Hindu.

howtobe · 04/11/2020 08:17

Of my three long term relationships, two were circumcised. 1 during the relationship and the second as a child due to recurrent urine infections.

Angelsman · 04/11/2020 08:45

@carlywurly

Dp is and all but one of my exes have been (all for varying medical reasons) so it's more normal for me than not. I personally prefer it and I know dp was much happier once he'd had it done.
Can I ask why your Dp was happier after being circumcised? I have a mate who said the same. I was circumcised as a boy so have no before and after experience to compare. My Dp tells me she loves my cock so I'm happy.
Isitsixoclockalready · 04/11/2020 09:09

@xpc316e yes, I agree. I'm circumcised for religious reasons although I'm not religious and I wouldn't have put my children through it even if I hadn't married a non-Jewish lady. In fact, I believe that certain Jewish strands don't make it obligatory any more although I might be wrong. As far as stimulation goes, how would I be able to make the comparison? I would say that it's never ever been an issue for me - that's all I can say.

Sls668 · 04/11/2020 09:40

I think this depends on if you date within a specific culture/race etc of men as I haven’t seen many uncircumcised men!

MrMeeseekscando · 04/11/2020 13:29

I've been up close and personal with 3 circumcised men.
One struggled to climax, it could be exhausting at times. His was a religious circumcision as a baby.
The others I saw little difference. Both medical.
I actually did prefer circumcised for a long time, but I think that is because I had a skanky ex that didn't wash properly Envy (Not envy)
My current boyfriend washes properly Grin that could be where the hygiene thing comes from. Lazy cockwashers skewing female opinion.

SimonJT · 04/11/2020 18:20

Obviously its normal, but its not very common, I’ve played sport for a long time and I don’t recall seeing another circumcised penis in the changing room, I also haven’t had a partner who is circumcised.

I am circumcised and it normally leads to surprise as its fairly uncommon, or people asking what to do with it as certain things work differently.

As someone who has seen how uncircumcised men react to certain things and how I react to them I definitely lack sensitivity. Pleasure wise I get more from other parts of my body, like nipples and my penis is fairly low down on the ‘touch me’ list.

VioletSunset · 06/11/2020 21:54

I don't think its common in the UK. I've only slept with one man that was circumcised, the head of his penis was all dry and leathery compared to an intact mans glans, which i find is normally slick and glistening. And it definitely seemed like he was lacking sensation, he was much less vocal than other men. Took ages for him to orgasm too. Uncircumcised is definitely my preference.

carlywurly · 06/11/2020 22:34

@Angelsman he was really uncomfortable before as it was all so tight.

Post procedure he reckons he gained at least an extra inch Grin which I can neither confirm nor deny as I didn't know him back then.

I have no complaints anyway!
