In Britain is it normal for men to be circumcised or not?

I’ve just watched an episode of Good Trouble where one of the characters is very surprised that her boyfriend is uncircumcised. She talks about it with her friends and they all clearly regard it as very unusual. It reminded me that there is an episode of Sex and the City where one of the characters is also very surprised to find that a man is uncircumcised.

This makes me wonder: what’s the situation with this in Britain? I’ve always assumed that the vast majority of British men are uncircumcised, but I’ve not been with many men so don’t know whether this is the case. Just curious!

80 % of males in America are circumcised ; less than 20 % of males in UK.

My DH and middle son are circumcised; not for religious reasons. DC 1 and 3 are not.

Zanatdy · 18/12/2022 20:53

Well that's open for debate

Blokegarget · 19/12/2022 00:27

@pocketvenuss

What a delightful way to describe mutilating
babies genitals.

I wonder if the MN folk would tolerate discussing FGM in such a manner …..

“looks better for a start!” Describing such abhorrent acts on either sexes.

Religious <
what a cop out , or “ medical” < ridiculous!!

You would scream sexism and mysogony if the discussion was about how female genitals
looked post mutilation wouldn’t you…

So why is it ok for you to talk about boys and babies having this done to them without their consent ?

cormorant5 · 19/12/2022 06:57

I am an older F. The practice changed years ago. I did have an older Partner.
Up to 1960/70s It was usual, routine before going home after birth . After that Mothers protested and it was changed.
my late P had almost no foreskin and the head of it was no more sensitive than a finger. Poor chap.

It's the stupid new function that shows "similar threads", some of which are very old!

Oldtadger · 19/12/2022 18:00

There is no way to describe this brutal attack on children as "normal".

Musicaltheatremum · 19/12/2022 18:08

Both my husband's were circumsised. First born in 1961 in Kenya because that's what you did and second born in 1958 in Zimbabwe but not done until had phimosis as a young boy. But as a GP it's not common.

ChristmasSparkleTastic · 23/12/2022 05:23

Muslim or Jewish men are mostly circumcised.

namechanged1010 · 25/12/2022 08:14

pocketvenuss · 18/12/2022 15:37

@Namechanged1010 you've decided for some reason that women prefer a circumcised penis. Any other widespread opinions you have decided upon?
Personally I could not give a rats arse but removing a piece of skin from a healthy baby for no medical reason is just plain odd

I think it is clear how I formed my personal view, and very much from chats with friends (granted on girlie nights out when wine was flowing).

Seems a strange kind of sex life where you spend any amount of time just sitting looking at your partner's willy.

girlfriend44 · 28/12/2022 14:09

its definetely prettier.

Blokegarget · 28/12/2022 17:47

””it’s definitely prettier”

Wow !! what blatant sexism and double standards discussing non consensual mutilation of babies genitals.

you wouldn’t hesitate to call out a man calling a woman’s genitals post surgery “misogynistic”

any non consensual mutilation of genitals of either sex is abhorrent. The widespread mutilation of boys is just as outrageous but women like you see it as “pretty”. Awful attitude.

ordinaryman · 29/12/2022 18:06

I think it is utterly abhorrent for anything other than sound medical reasons, or if you actively consent as an adult. Whilst different to the FGM procedure on a girl, it is very much in my view Male Genital Mutilation. What else would you call cutting-off bits of non-consenting baby boys' genitals for no medical reason? If a surgeon had similarly cut-off your index finger shortly after you were born for no reason, wouldn’t you think “I’ve been mutilated!”?

If you want to call unnecessary surgery ‘normal’, that’s up to you… Those who think you should lose bits of your genitals for religious reasons presumably come from the same stable as those who would happily remove your head too.

As for looks better?!...

It has no demonstrable health benefit. It is barbaric, plain and simple.

Cleanliness is a separate issue that requires someone to wash properly, not for someone to go around cutting bits off you.

Most penises can have their foreskins easily retracted, so best of both worlds in the bedroom.

If you are a woman, you might also consider the documented penetrative advantages of having a man with a foreskin (in a no-condom relationship), i.e. the foreskin allows the easy delivery of the moist penis head into the vagina by a good couple of inches, relative to circumcised, causing less trauma to the sensitive skin surrounding the opening of the vagina.

Kenny676767 · 30/12/2022 21:35

In the U.K. it's not normal to be circumcised except in some religious groups or for medical reasons i.e. when the foreskin can't be fully retracted. Most ladies I've been with prefer an uncircumcised penis and like the "fun" of retracting the foreskin to reveal the head of the penis. Sorry for maybe too much information.

PaulChats · 03/01/2023 22:55

I am circumcised and I’ve never had any complaints. Some really prefer it - bulbous end and it gives a different situation. Available for inspection!

Since I first read this post I’ve discovered my new BF is circumcised. But it’s due to a sports injury in his late 20’s! He’s the 2nd man I’ve slept with who has been circumcised, don’t even know how many men I’ve slept with as I don’t have a tally but 2 is in the minority. Incidentally the bf said he prefers being circumcised after I asked him.

HarperHelper · 09/01/2023 08:34

I am in the US and my husband is circumcised because it’s usual here. When I was pregnant with our son I asked my husband about it and he said he assumed our son would be circumcised too. When I said why? He couldn’t tell me a reason (we aren’t Jewish or Muslim). So being a doctor he did a lot of research and could find no medical evidence whatsoever for needing routine circumcision. So we decided to leave our son intact. He is 16 now and I have never had the discussion (at least I haven’t maybe DH has) explaining why he is uncut. I always think if he asks I will tell him he’s free to go and get a piece of his penis cut off by a Dr/Surgeon any time once he is 18 😂
