Personal hygiene

I read a twitter exchange arising from an article about poor female genital hygiene. One user said, “unperfumed soap and water, it’s not hard girls”. Lots of people responded saying you should never use soap on your vagina. The reply was “not inside it, no but on the folds”. This left some dumbfounded. Do some females really think that no cleaning agent should be used in the area at all?! Hmm

@windchimesabotage EXACTLY!!

MerryMarigold · 25/01/2018 11:34

I use copious amounts of shower gel and never get thrush or anything else. I would be a bit Hmm at just soap and water and have taught dd to wash with a bit of soap too. I would wash my hands with soap after going to the loo, so definitely also my anus, which is pretty close to everything else.

MerryMarigold · 25/01/2018 11:34

Sorry i meant Hmm at just WATER alone.

Mandalorian · 25/01/2018 11:40

when it gets so bad you can detect the vaginal odour of somebody standing next to you who is fully clothed

Are you particularly short OP?

I will go against the grain and say I can smell them. Some women smell muskier than others. I am glad I have never discussed this in real life now as it looks as though I am in a minority

NewYearNiki · 25/01/2018 11:43

When you get thrush the first thing they advise you is no perfumed bath products or soap products. Just plain water to wash with.

That to me suggests they arent good at all or necessary for that area.

No problem with hygiene here.

EdmundCleverClogs · 25/01/2018 11:44

Thanks for the overshare MerryMarigold. Bet the OP loved that...

PortiaCastis · 25/01/2018 11:45

Oh jeez more information gathering, but nope none from me

ThymeLord · 25/01/2018 11:46

You knocked it out yet OP?

Bluecheeseandpineapple · 25/01/2018 11:46

I am, when it gets so bad you can detect the vaginal odour of somebody standing next to you who is fully clothed.
I highly doubt that, as that would involve coming out of your parents basement and interacting with actual people and the world instead of sitting on your computer getting your sexual kicks asking "females" how they wash their fanny on mn

All I know is my gynaecologist said 'Don't add anything to the bath water but yourself'.

I love these sorts of sayings/advice - pronouncing them to my kids gets a most-satisfying eye-roll.

Can I add: Never put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow, and never eat anything bigger than your head.

Bad smell might not always mean bad hygiene though? Could be thrush or BV ect?

My only symptom of BV was an unpleasant smell after sex that was still present after showering and washing

Pepperedbeef · 25/01/2018 11:53

I’m female/woman/whatever is the acceptable MN description for someone with a vagina who wears women’s clothes and has sex with a man! I’ve been told I think like a man sometimes though. I’m neither flattered not offended by that.

When I was pregnant I found I had very unpleasant vaginal odour. Vaginas shouldn’t smell like pot pourri. I use Johnson’s baby soap.

As for teaching personal hygiene, I know someone who was never taught to wipe front to back and suffered with repeated infections

Pepperedbeef · 25/01/2018 11:55

Yes, vulva is what I’m referring to.

steppemum · 25/01/2018 11:55

a bit of soap or whatever is needed.

but it isn't.
water is plenty, you can get clean with water you know!

TheCowWentMoo · 25/01/2018 11:55

Maybe op is very short? Like 2 feet tall? I have literally never smelt a stranger's genitals. How would you know it's fanny? Surely it's just as likely to be dick smell? Especially as men tend to spread their legs more? You would never get close enough to someone's genitals to know whos were smelling. Maybe it's bv/thrush from all the excessive washing and perfumes we women will now be using
