How many blazers for Y7 boy

Summerflames · 03/06/2024 23:08

Hi all,

Just pricing up school uniform for when my eldest starts Y7 this year.

How many blazers does an 11 year old boy need realistically? Was planning on buying 2 but ex p said one would be enough. Is this correct? I'm just thinking if it gets slopped on, gets wet or he puts holes in it somehow 😂

The school also has a logo'ed jumper so maybe I can get one blazer, one jumper? What do others recommend?

@TokyoSushi What happens to the ties to need so many?

They break them lose them and repeat

I've never bought more than one blazer

TokyoSushi · 04/06/2024 18:07

Break them, lose them, lend them to somebody, forget them after PE, drop them on the way home - you name it! 🙄

AnyOldThings · 04/06/2024 18:11

1 blazer. So so many ties ;)

Defo 1 blazer

I don’t think one jumper is enough especially in winter when it’s cold / they leave it in their sports bags / it gets lost. I buy 4 jumpers per child and we are always struggling to find a jumper in winter 🤣.

Trousers 3 pairs
Shirt x 6 for the week (some short sleeve some long)
2 ties

Summerflames · 04/06/2024 18:29

4 jumpers? 😳 praying my boy doesn't forget/lose/ruin his. I'll probably buy 2

One blazer. 3 jumpers as mine do wear most days unless hot. Get filthy. My DS yr7 comes home muddy most days so 5 trousers. Plays footy / mucks about on grass etc.
Endless Tues. I must have 7 broken ones ( Clips break) and lost a couple. Our school office sells them tho & just adds to your parent payment account !

Eeeden · 04/06/2024 19:06

We just get one per child and try to get as long as possible out of them.

TigerOnTour · 04/06/2024 21:47

Do they wear them every day or do they wear PE kit 2 days out of 5?

TheFunHasGone · 04/06/2024 22:15

They wear them every day where I am , they have to change out of PE kit

I'll have my 4th dc going into secondary school this year, I've never bought a jumper as hardly anyone wears them and mine all said they didn't need them when they have long sleeved shirts and blazers on

I do always buy 5 pairs of trousers and 5 shirts though and luckily you can buy ties online now that they can pick up from school

PerspicaciaTick · 04/06/2024 22:24

My DD and DS have both got through secondary school with 3 blazers each for the whole time.
Polyester blazers wash beautifully but tend to get weirdly shiny with wear...but everyone is wearing the same stuff so they all look mildly tatty together.
Save your money for the inevitable trips.

Frostynight · 04/06/2024 22:29

My boys had one blazer per year, until year 10, and then managed to not grow for a year so I didn't have to go up a size in year 11.

DS1's school had jumpers, which no one wore. DS2 had two jumpers which he wore.

DS2 never lost an item of uniform, or a tie.

DS1 lost his entire games kit in year 7, and again in year 8, and random items in between. He probably had 5 complete kits over the years, and still wears the shorts now, several years later.

Comedycook · 04/06/2024 22:32

I've only ever had one for my ds...but I will say we've had the odd day where he's had PE and come home saying he left his blazer in the changing room. Luckily he's always found it when he's gone in the next morning but I've written many notes explaining the lack of blazer just in case. So if you can afford two, go for it...but I'd get the second in one size up so you get more wear out of it.

Newuser75 · 04/06/2024 22:50

One blazer is fine. They say dry clean only but every one that my kids have had will go in the wash no problem. A wool wash is best then hang on coat hanger to dry.
We have one blazer, three jumpers, three shirts, three pairs of trousers and about a million ties as they always hide somewhere.

User364837 · 04/06/2024 22:53

Jumpers are compulsory here unless it’s hot so my ddc have had at least 2, they tend to get hot in them so they get stinky!

MyNameIsErinQuin · 04/06/2024 22:54

1 blazer. No jumpers, never ever worn at DS’s school!

CaptainJeanLucPicardOfTheStarshipEnterprise · 04/06/2024 23:08

One polyester blazer washed every Friday on the woollens cycle.
If I ever need to do a mid-week wash, I wash it, and hang it in the airing cupboard, and it’s dry by morning.

Mellville · 04/06/2024 23:27

Mine have three blazers. They get sweaty, muddy, crumpled from being shoved in their bags so need lots of washing and the ones my DC have to wear don't wash very well.
Jumpers aren't compulsory at my DC school and for some reason only the girls wear them.

Bbq1 · 05/06/2024 00:04

One is sufficient although I think my ds had 2 at one point. They went through the machine well and dried in no time. Definitely one jumper. I bought 2/3 but within a couple of months ds was too warm in the jumper and he didn't wear one for the next 5 years!

Justploddingonandon · 05/06/2024 09:28

My DS wears the jumpers as his school is an old and poorly heated building which he says is freezing in winter. In fact I'm only just managing to prize him out of them now it's getting warmer. We find 2 jumpers and 2 trousers plenty but he doesn't like playing football so isn't really getting muddy apart from during PE when he's wearing his PE kit).

MavisPennies · 05/06/2024 09:29

One absolutely massive one that will last til year 9 is the standard approach round here.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 05/06/2024 09:30

DS has one, but they are £95!

DrCoconut · 05/06/2024 09:38

DS is still wearing his first blazer as he heads towards year 9. He only has to wear one for another two years then year 11 is jumpers only as it's the last year (no school 6th forms here). I'm hoping we can get away with just 2 blazers overall. He only has one tie but it's a traditional one not clip on so it can't really break, fall off etc. definitely recommend spare jumpers though, they get really sweaty and grim.

Persimonne72 · 06/06/2024 08:04

Cheerfulcharlie · 03/06/2024 23:13

One blazer really should be fine, but I’d get 3 ties!

Why? What do they do with ties?

( Y6 mum here)

whiteboardking · 06/06/2024 10:26

Ties: lost in school, clip on ones break, get dinner down, get lost in the house, get lost in the park- they just vanish. We have loads yet neither child could find one at 8.20 today despite both coming home in one yesterday.
