How many blazers for Y7 boy

Hi all,

Just pricing up school uniform for when my eldest starts Y7 this year.

How many blazers does an 11 year old boy need realistically? Was planning on buying 2 but ex p said one would be enough. Is this correct? I'm just thinking if it gets slopped on, gets wet or he puts holes in it somehow 😂

The school also has a logo'ed jumper so maybe I can get one blazer, one jumper? What do others recommend?

Why? What do they do with ties?

( Y6 mum here)

They take them off the second they leave the school gate and then they lose them. Or they get pulled off.

But I'd suggest you should take school policy - it's easy to buy a new tie from school shop at DC's school, and they will lend you a tie if you don't have one on a particular day. Other schools are more militant.

DD had 1 blazer from Y7-Y11. You just wash in holidays.
Virtually no one wears jumpers. I'd wait and see if your child gets cold (unless they are compulsory).

My son is unlikely to take it off ( he wouldn't be bothered with the liberating activities like that) but I bet he will have it all in soup on the first day :)) He is going to Catholic school where ex OPs are taking care of the behaviour and uniforms.

At £50 a pop both mine made do with one. Youngest wore the same one til year 11, eldest had to get a new one for year 11.

roses2 · 07/06/2024 14:07

I've just looked at our new uniform. How on earth do sizes work? I have an average size Year 6 boy and the website says Age 13 takes size 34. But he already wears 34 jumpers in Year 6 primary and I want to size up.

What sizes are you all buying? It is from Price and Buckland if that helps.

rzb · 07/06/2024 16:36

@roses2 I got a few preloved garments to help gauge the right size for my kid and I'll be buying stuff in S. Had I have relied on the P&B size guides, I'd have ordered the 34 and then probably have been returning a lot of stuff. However, my kiddo is far from representative of a typical Y6 build, so I'd suggest seeing whether you can borrow / acquire a couple of sizes to try before ordering.

roses2 · 07/06/2024 16:40

Thanks - did you end up ordering a bigger size than P&B suggested? His primary uniform is from P&B so I am hoping that is gauge of the correct size to order for secondary.

The school have a second hand uniform sale on the parents (child not invited) day so will take some of DS existing jumpers as comparison to help size.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/06/2024 16:49

Much to DD's disgust, I bought a 32" blazer for Year 7 and that lasted her through. She didn't believe me that I'd seen enough kids turn into teenagers to be able to judge that she wasn't likely to need anything bigger for a few years (if ever).

I think for the majority of boys, a blazer that's a bit big in year 7 will last them until Y9 unless they're going to use it as a goal post along with jumpers and ties, which is where they get left regularly (and the ties nicked because they all lose them in PE/break) - and then they should be around the switch from boy to young man for the next one just as there's about two inches gap between wrist and sleeve.

Of course, there are always outliers to both girls and boys, but I think most people can more or less gauge it by family build whether they're suddenly going to develop 28HHHs or reach 6'7" and 19 stone by 13.

The real issues come from trousers and skirts. They never fit.

rzb · 07/06/2024 16:57

@roses2 Yes. Having measured my child and compared with the sizing chart, I'd have ordered 34" tops and 11/12 shorts. Having acquired some real P&B garments, the XS top fits a touch on the small side of perfectly right now, and I reckon an XS could last until the winter's out if it really needed to (but would look a bit daft by then). The S is the right size top for us to get now and I think we can reasonably expect it to contain 6-9 months of growth. It probably wouldn't outlast a growth spurt, but the M is drowningly large on my kiddo atm and I wouldn't feel it's fair to send them in uniform that's clearly too large. In real garments, either the age 13 or S shorts look OK, so we'll get the larger size. We don't have to buy tailored uniform from P&B, so we will buy from elsewhere, as we know a couple of brands that work well with our child's unusual measurements.

Waspie · 07/06/2024 16:57

I bought two, but one in his size and one in a bigger size. I figured if the smaller one got lost or trashed he could wear the larger one until I could get a new smaller one. He's leaving year 11 now and has never needed more than the two I originally bought.

2 jumpers and 3 pairs of trousers (3-pack), 6 shirts (2 x 3 packs). Plus lots of sports kit.

Ime nothing at all, my children have never lost a tie or indeed any item of school uniform, I don't think they are particularly unless in that regard

sandorschicken · 07/06/2024 17:07

Mine started in September!

We got:

1 x Blazer
5 x short sleeved shirts
5 x Trousers
5 x Jumpers
3 Ties
And one set of the school branded PE kit.

He's gone through 3 pairs of Nicolas Deakin shoes though which is an arse ache.

rzb · 07/06/2024 17:29

@sandorschicken Does it all get used? Is that a week of trousers/jumpers/shirts? I think my kid has to wear PE kit for two full days in the week, so I'm currently imagining (and hoping) that fewer jumpers etc. would be needed. (As an aside, how can a cheap cotton jumper with a bit of embroidery cost so much more than other cheap cotton jumpers plus small scale embroidery costs?)

Well in fairness, DS school doesn't require anything to have school logo on except blazer, tie and pe shirt. The rest is from M&S but yes, it does all get worn! If it had needed to have been bought from school (ie megabucks) then I would have had to re-think but having one of each means I'm not having to wash his uniform through the week and I can just do a dark wash and a white one on a Saturday ready to be ironed on Sunday! His PE shirt is lightweight so I just do a quick hand wash in sink!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/06/2024 17:41

One blazer is fine but you’ll need more sets of Pe kit than you could ever imagine!

BigBoysDontCry · 07/06/2024 17:42

He'll grow fast. If it's those washable ones rather than wool then 1 is fine, it'll wash and dry quickly if required. I washed my boys blazers every week but they went through more than one per year averaged out as they were 6'3/6'4 by the time they finished high school.

Changed18 · 07/06/2024 17:43

We got one in year 7 and another one at easter of year 9. But I do know of someone who had one all the way through...

BigBoysDontCry · 07/06/2024 17:43

Eldest DS never wore a jumper, 2 were fine for DS2 and he was dispraxic and prone to losing stuff.

Snowpatrolling · 07/06/2024 17:45

My daughter still wearing the same one from when she started in year 7, she’s year 8 now! I do have one the next size up for when this one is completly wrecked! Still going strong at the mo!

JaffavsCookie · 08/06/2024 21:26

It was trousers my y7 lost!
I bought a 3 pack from a supermarket thinking that would be loads.
I hadn’t banked on the fact that when they had sports sessions after school ( rugby training etc) they could then go home on the late bus in their kit. It wasn’t until I washed a pair of very muddy trousers first thing one morning ( actually in the washer) and then he appeared in his pants and admitted he had lost the other 2 pairs!

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 08/06/2024 22:33

One!
