How many blazers for Y7 boy

Hi all,

Just pricing up school uniform for when my eldest starts Y7 this year.

How many blazers does an 11 year old boy need realistically? Was planning on buying 2 but ex p said one would be enough. Is this correct? I'm just thinking if it gets slopped on, gets wet or he puts holes in it somehow 😂

The school also has a logo'ed jumper so maybe I can get one blazer, one jumper? What do others recommend?

Often kids have 1 but if you can afford 2 it's probably no bad thing.
Check the uniform policy on jumpers. Usually it's optional jumper but only to be worn with the blazer- not by itself.

LiterallyOnFire · 03/06/2024 23:13

I think one is normal. I always bought two because my DC are dyspraxic. But the shop assistants always commented on that with surprise.

Cheerfulcharlie · 03/06/2024 23:13

One blazer really should be fine, but I’d get 3 ties!

OnehundredStars · 03/06/2024 23:13

One is plenty I think. You could always get next years size up as a back up buy not use it (to save waste)

Summerflames · 03/06/2024 23:14

Ah thank you!! Seems one is plenty. Brilliant thank you all 😊

Ours are a polyester that washes and dries quickly so we just went with one.

Bluecrumble · 03/06/2024 23:18

I bought one and then got a spare (the next size up) at the uniform sale.

Yep! I’d go so far as to say that they come out of the machine dry! Seriously… they are slightly wet, but I’m not joking when I say that in a proper emergency you could just put them straight on 🤣

This makes me so happy!!! I had visions of doing a panic wash and dry in case he got it messed up. Saying that though, his table manners are decent so he shouldn't get too mucky

One.

never been aware of anyone having more than one, and I had a very messy dc!

Sadless · 04/06/2024 06:29

Should only need one don’t waste money buying two. My son has 2 pants a few shirts (from Asda ) and had one blazer and tie .

TokyoSushi · 04/06/2024 06:39

We only have one, as pp has said, they come out of the wash virtually dry so can definitely have an emergency quick wash!

But the ties, oh the ties, we're currently on number 4 this year 🙄

Bluebird23 · 04/06/2024 10:35

I bought two blazers for Y7 but only one for the following years as that's all they need.
I'd suggest buying spare tie and PE socks

Foxesandsquirrels · 04/06/2024 10:37

Had the same blazer from y7 and would've used it till y11 if she didn't move school!
They're rarely allowed to take them off so it's very unlikely to get lost.

Divebar2021 · 04/06/2024 10:40

Have you checked they don’t have second hand uniform for sale. I kitted out my DD with everything for year 7 from the school uniform sales…( and they have a ton of logo items). I have 2 blazers but only because I found a better fit and they only cost me £10 each. I have 2 jumpers and about 6 or 7 shirts.

stressedespresso · 04/06/2024 10:40

I’ve never, ever heard of anyone owning more than one blazer at a time and DD wore one right through primary to sixth from.

Typically hers would last the full school year, sometimes had to be replaced at Easter if she’d grown or had been particularly hard on it that year. The elbows sometimes needed repadded. Hers were woollen so typically had them dry cleaned each half term as they do get a bit manky looking/pongy after a while, especially if wet.

TheChosenTwo · 04/06/2024 10:41

I bought 2 for my first dc but only one for the next one as number 1 outgrew them quickly (long arms like me!) and really one was enough. Wash and dry quickly!
they have done away with the blazers totally now though; gone back to sweatshirts now so dc3 has none but 3 sweatshirts, 2 ties and 10 shirts so they can all go in on a white wash once a fortnight - no one else owns white clothes here!

J2os · 04/06/2024 10:41

One was fine for us. Just sponge clean in the week and machine wash at the weekend.

I know a few people who bought one new blazer and one very battered second hand one so that there was always something available in case of a cleaning emergency. If your school has a second hand one this might be a compromise.

Justploddingonandon · 04/06/2024 10:43

DS in year 7 has one and never been a problem apart from it is now too short. I'd hesitate buying the next size up as a spare, pretty sure DS is going to need at least two sizes bigger next year.

lolopoplop · 04/06/2024 10:46

I would buy the next size up as a spare.

PatriciaHolm · 04/06/2024 10:59

DD managed on 1 all through to end of sixth form! DS didn't but that's because he went from about 5ft to 6ft 2 over the same period...I don't think he ever wore the jumper but he runs hot. He would have worn short if allowed!

But yes - multiple ties!

TalkVeryFast · 04/06/2024 16:57

Don’t buy a jumper until you find out if anyone actually wears them. At our school although they are on the uniform list I’ve never seen anyone wear one

Decafflatteplease · 04/06/2024 17:02

One blazer one jumper (as they never wear the jumper) and approximately 638564 ties as they get lost!

The blazers do get a bit smelly - body odour - as they have to wear them no matter the temperature.
I've two kids and 3 blazers - one is DS1 hand me down, so small for him and a bit big for DS2. I don't think they've ever needed it.

Theothername · 04/06/2024 17:10

I buy one, and a size up as a spare (and to be ready for that weekend growth spurt boys like to have)
