French writing tomorrow as well. That will mark three subjects done.

Morning fellow anxious parents, almost half term and boy do they (and we) need it!

@GlomOfNit I swear we share a son Grin I'm pleased your son was happy with the papers yesterday. Fingers crossed English Language and Psychology are as good today. The whole summer election is a big shock. We go on holiday on 3rd July so will have, for the first time ever, to organise a postal vote.

DS loves English Language. He has always been very strong at creative writing so hopefully this morning's paper will be a good one for him, and for all our children. He has a file full of plans and sentences, thoughts and themes to bounce off. He says he usually does the "prompt" question 5 rather than the picture but will decide based on the options.

Good luck to all students!

Can't all have good luck, because they are literally in competition with each other....such is the horror of exams. !

MamOfTwo · 23/05/2024 09:39

Good luck to all! So glad for brief respite after today for a week before round 2 begins!

Quick aside - for those who do GCSE Psychology, are many from the class choosing it for A-level? It isn't taught at DC's school for GCSE but is an A-level option and has proved a hugely popular choice. Just wondering if people are in for a rude awakening as have heard it is a hard subject?!

DS has not chosen Psychology as an A Level subject. He hasn't enjoyed the GCSE. I think he thought it would be more Cracker and less looking at tables of data! He also didn't have a subject teacher for most of year 10 so associates the subject with worksheets and substitute teachers. I think only a couple of the girls in his class are thinking of doing A Level.

At one of the sixth form open evenings I was talking to an A Level Psychology teacher who said that their school didn't do GCSE as she felt the students weren't old enough to have the nuance required to "get" psychology as a subject. That's just one teacher's view of course.

Newlittlerescue · 23/05/2024 11:00

DS reported English Language (AQA) was 'fine'. The creative writing was about a desert (I don't know if that means you had to write about a desert, or he just chose to write about a desert to address the topic. Of course it could have been about a dessert (this was shared over WhatsApp, and he's not one to elaborate further, so who knows!))

Tiredalwaystired · 23/05/2024 11:02

Waiting for my Eduquas paper sitting daughter to report back.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/05/2024 11:10

Once dd has finished French tomorrow and because she’s doing majority edexel igcse, she will only have 2 left thank goodness. I’m so pleased for her that she managed to get this far as I didn’t know if she’d be too weak to attend her exams... her English language today is 3 hours so she’ll be finished with that in just over an hour.

JessyCarr · 23/05/2024 11:12

@Newlittlerescue According to The Student Room the photo prompt was a picture of a desert (not dessert!) and the alternative was a story about a disagreement.

MonkeyTennis34 · 23/05/2024 11:14

A desert????
DD's text is actually based on the idea of a desert 😳

Really pleased for her. Makes up for the Maths!

Newlittlerescue · 23/05/2024 11:15

Thanks! I'm surprised he went with the photo prompt then, as he told me it's always best to go with the story. And a desert seems a bit....deserted....

MamOfTwo · 23/05/2024 11:17

AQA here - yes, desert reports here. Reading text featured two characters Mary and Dick set in 1950s but she can't remember book title! Any guesses?!

Waiting for my Eduquas paper sitting daughter to report back.

Mine too!

steppemum · 23/05/2024 11:19

morning.
physics yesterday was awful. (AQA higher)
There was a 6 marker about an experiment that she couldn't remember ever seeing before (that's what happens when you miss loads of school and are doing catch up at the same time as revision)

She did say lots of equations which is good for her, but she would be surprised if she passed, and paper 2 is looking worse because that has more of the content she has missed.

English language is her worse exam and she will be doing well to pass. I am just hoping that she gets something down for every question and all the intense extra help she has had over tha last 4 months will pay off. She just needs a pass!

I won't hear how she did until after school though.
It's a long wait.

JessyCarr · 23/05/2024 11:25

Sorry to hear that, @steppemum. If it helps for the science paper 2s, perhaps point her to the Revision Monkey videos on YouTube for the required practicals. Her videos cover them all and DD has found them really useful - concise, clear and memorable.

I hope your DD has a better day today.

Waspie · 23/05/2024 11:26

DS reports that English language (AQA) was wonderful and he "cooked". Managed time well and even had time to review at the end. He said he did the disagreement for Q5.

Mary and Dick set in the 50's? Hmmm.... The only Dick I know was in the Famous Five!

JessyCarr · 23/05/2024 11:30

I also thought of Famous Five! But apparently Mary and Dick were a married couple arguing about her wasteful use of water, or something like that.

steppemum · 23/05/2024 11:41

thanks JessyCarr I think she uses those videos. She will only revise at school, so it is hard to know how much she has actually done.

half term is going ot be interesting. She needs to do chemistry, - to get the grade for A level; physics and biology to stand some chance of passing due to so much missed contecnt that she hasn't nailed down yet (her fault not school's) and maths because it is an A level subject and she needs at least a 7, and without more work won't get it.

But the likelihood of her doing any effective revision over half term is very small, and so I shall spend the week biting my tongue and feeling frustrated.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/05/2024 11:45

DS said it was OK didn't like question 4 much. He would normally go for the story but didn't like the subject matter so did the description one about the desert.

Waspie · 23/05/2024 11:48

It seems to be "The Grass is Singing" by Doris Lessing.

Waspie · 23/05/2024 11:49

@JessyCarr - the Mary & Dick extract is apparently from "The Grass is Singing" by Doris Lessing. Sorry, my previous post made no sense!

Pharos · 23/05/2024 12:14

Not DS’s favourite subject, really didn’t like the extract.
Was happy enough with his creative writing but glad it’s out of the way.
French writing tomorrow then he’s finished with it ‘forever’ he says 😁

ouch44 · 23/05/2024 12:19

DD not so happy about English but I think she'll be ok.

She'd prepared a couple of paragraphs about a hot, dry place last night! DS always refused to revise for English but proof you absolutely can prepare! However, she says she got the text line numbers for the 20 mark question muddled. Noticed and had to cross out a huge paragraph but managed to get 2 and a bit paragraphs for it. So hopefully they cancel each other out.
She's now finished till after half term and gone to bed!

newmum1976 · 23/05/2024 12:22

DD happy with the Edexcel creative writing “write about a time when you discovered someone/something”. Ran out of time a bit for part A.

I was invigilating and sneaked a look over a shoulder. It was a picture of a desert as the prompt. I couldn't see any more than that and I'm very short sighted so couldn't read questions non suspiciously 😀

Dressinggownlife · 23/05/2024 12:37

DD whose Eng lang is one of strongest. In mocks got an 8. She just texted to say questions 1-4 went well. Question 5 about a desert only wrote 2.5 paragraphs. She said the content was good she felt but I really worry it’s not enough paragraphs.

I feel for her. I’ve seen before people say they start with q5 on lang paper 1 but others disagreed with this. I’ve no idea why she ran out of time

Ilovewillow · 23/05/2024 12:38

English Lang ok here just French writing tomorrow now before half term, oh and a Maths masterclass - yippee!!
