DS said today was a disaster. Maths was difficult and he feels like he made stupid mistakes and then RE he forgot everything and got confused with terminology etc. He doesn't think he's going to get the 4 now he needs to go to his school sixth form. I told him to still try hard as he could make it up in the 2 other papers, and as everyone found it hard they may move the grade boundaries a bit lower. We'll see what happens now. He feels like he did well in the first RE paper, and this paper has the fewest marks, so he may scrape a pass. The maths is the biggest worry though . I hope Chemistry is OK otherwise it will be hard to motivate him for next week.

@DramaLlamaBangBang it’s so difficult for them to keep it going when they feel they’ve had a bad paper 🙁

TinfoilTangerine · 16/05/2024 16:56

DS (Edexcel higher) thought it was ok but there were some questions he couldn't do. I think though that he akways expects to struggle with some maths questions so doesn't see that as meaning paper was a disaster. He is quite pleased because he got same answer as friend who is really good at maths for a hard question near the end. He usually gets a 7/8 but made loads of mistake in mock and got 5/6.

Panic71 · 16/05/2024 17:04

Help!!
My Son answered the whole RE paper and not just the sections he was meant to :(
Will his paper be thrown out?

I don't think so - think they will just mark the number of questions he should answer and disregard the rest. So, if he should have answered one question in section B but answered 2 questions in Section B, they will only mark his first answer.
IANAE (I am not an examiner) though so that could all be wrong.

Do you mean he was meant to talk about Islam ( for example) and did all the questions on Judaism too? I think they just mark the first section, whatever that is, so they will ignore the subsequent sections, even if the subsequent sections contain the questions he should have done. Oh God its a nightmare!

Panic71 · 16/05/2024 17:12

It’s the themes paper - he answered the whole lot! 😭😭😭😭

dinomirror · 16/05/2024 17:14

They will mark all and count the 4 highest - thats what RE teacher said anyway

Booksandflowers · 16/05/2024 17:14

They’ll only give him marks for 4 themes but which ones they’ll pick to grade him on, I have no idea.

Oh no, I hope he can look past this for now, but know how you feel. Luckily DD did RS last year so that is out of the way.

Your last sentence resonates with me, if DD has a bad chemistry exam tomorrow things could keep going downhill. Fingers crossed it is kinder than maths!

CalmConfident · 16/05/2024 17:26

Radio silence from DS on maths… suspect that means he’s not happy 😢 it’s been a fairly positive week till now

StarShipControl · 16/05/2024 17:26

So there are two more maths papers on ds timetable. Thankfully, he already knew.
We're not dwelling on todays awful paper and ds is doing chemistry all evening.

RunningAndSinging · 16/05/2024 17:28

RS short course exam was ok - couple of unexpected questions in the short answers part. On to Chemistry, German and Geography tomorrow - what a combination.

Booksandflowers · 16/05/2024 17:29

Anyone found the RS ok? Mine felt it was better than the first paper but not sure if scraped a 4 or not.

Lalux · 16/05/2024 17:39

@Booksandflowers DS thought the 2nd RS paper was pretty ok.

Yes mine was happier than they were with the first paper. I really hope they’ve got a 4!

gingercat02 · 16/05/2024 17:46

Maths was hard but doable. He seems fine with that.

German & Chemistry here too. They clash so has to do German straight after with no break!

Popfan · 16/05/2024 17:55

Aqa foundation maths here, DS seems happy enough, a couple of tricky ones at the end which he wasn't sure about and one with a graph and y= lines type question which he always struggles with. He was pleased overall though.

MonkeyTennis34 · 16/05/2024 17:57

If everyone finds a particular paper difficult, does that mean the grade boundaries come down?
<<please say yes!>>

Yes.

RachelGreensHair · 16/05/2024 18:08

I think DD finding all the exams OK is making her complacent. She's got chemistry tomorrow which she really does need to revise and is instead watching silly prank videos on YouTube.

JaninaDuszejko · 16/05/2024 18:10

DD1 said 'maths was horrendous as usual' but seemed fairly relaxed about it.

I'm more concerned about yesterday's history. She's thinking about doing the A level and did very well in her mocks, came home yesterday quite happy with how she did but then said she worked her way backwards so did the 16 marker first and ran out of time for the two 4 markers so she's dropped 8 easy marks 😱. Doesn't seem to realise she would have done better if she'd got those points and then had a slightly less good 16 marker (because she still would have got more than 8 marks on it).

Chemistry tomorrow is another potential A level choice so fingers crossed for that.

DoThePropeller · 16/05/2024 18:12

My DD thought maths (edexcel higher) was quite good with a few hard questions and maths isn’t her best subject. RS she said there were some bad 15 markers (not hard, but bad, wtf does that mean!).

I think it’s really hard for them to try and do any useful evaluation of their own performance. We just have to wait and see!
